Going to get the boot where I live now, and have been thinking about just moving into my car. It's illegal to live in your car in my city, but Walmarts and the local truck stop have people doing it.

Any experiences with this sort of thing? Advice?

Car is a 2008 Honda Fit.
>>
>>781812

honda fits are excellent for sleeping in, considering how small they are. it's very comfy. have you ever slept in your car before?
>>
Hey OP i lived in a sedan for a year and upgraded to a short schoolbus recently. Any specific questions?
>>
>>781815
Not yet. Been working up to a night at Walmart this week though. I've laid down in the back though, and I'm so used a mattress that's what bothers me most.
>>
>>781812
>It's illegal to live in your car in my city
What the fuck do they do? Arrest you? Take the car?
>>
>>781836
Ticket you severly
>>
>>781838
How can they even prove you're living in it, and not just taking a nap/moving/etc?
>>
>>781839
Its obvious
>>
>>781838

What the matter with sleeping in cars? It seems like there may be a good reason, but I'm not sure what it is.
>>
>>781843
Lots of cities have anti homeless laws
>>
>>781843
Basically, it's to deter "degenerates".
>>
>>781812
idk dude I would be pretty sketched out about sleeping in a walmart parking lot. My advice would be to go find a place in the woods where you can park your car like a parking lot for a backpacking trail.
>>
>>782018
Walmart parking lot is chill as fuck you pussy. How the fuck can you be afraid of sleeping in a well lit giant parking lot with cameras?
>>
>>782020
Loopy meth heads like to hang out at those places.
>>
>>782026
Well lit constantly populated parking lots with cameras? Speaking from experience there? Ive slept in countless walmart parking lots all over the country and have been bothered exactly 1 time and it was by the police because they were looking for a hooker. You need to get out waaay more if youre sketched out by fuckin walmart of all places.

/out/ walmart camp group when? Ill hold your hand anon, we'll get through the night together.
>>
>>782032
you probably do have better experience. I have never once lived in a city or anywhere within a 10 mile radius of a walmart.
>>
>>782038

Thanks :)
>>

>Walmart parking lot is chill as fuck you pussy.
My brother went 5th wheel traveling all over the US with his wife and they had an app that gps'd and listed the participating Walmarts that allowed campers to park overnight. I hung out with them for a couple of weeks and we just went into the store and told them we were overnighting and would be out in the AM. They just basically said no problem. We just parked with the other overnighters and they were just a bunch of retirees usually..

I did it for a few months, the most important thing is to be inconspicuous and you can park almost anywhere. Tips to follow.

-Avoid Walmarts and rest stops, people lurk around those spots. Thieves and worse.

-Keep you mess kit and other shit in a duffle etc. NOT strewn about.

-Brush your teeth etc before moving to your crash spot.

-scope a few spots during the day and park after dark.

-park uphill and you can sleep in your drivers seat, as it will be effectively flat fully reclined on a normal grade.

-Shower at a gyms, either paid or your school's (if available).

-Look into land developments, neighborhoods often have roads that just sort of end. Often people don't walk out there after dusk.

I found d a few spots I would just roll into after dark. Open and close my door for the illusion that I was seeing someone nearby, and slept in my driver's seat. I'd wake up for work early, eat breakfast, go to work, shower at school, make lunch, go to class, make dinner at a park and repeat. Weekends I'd camp. I had most of my possessions in a storage unit and loaded it for easy access to fresh cloths etc.
This was all in a basic '90s japo sedan, Fits are a little more memorable but I bet you'll be fine.
>>
>>782088
>Avoid Walmarts and rest stops, people lurk around those spots. Thieves and worse.
I realize this is a broad statement. The quality will vary from town to town but in my county these places are pretty bad.
I more than once had fags knock on my window at rest stops. FUCK that shit.
>>
>>782088
listen to this guy, especially the part about getting a gym membership and land developments. don't restrict yourself to the city you're living in right now. learn your area and where the chill discreet places are. google maps satellite view is great for spotting places to sleep. a gym membership is the best money you'll ever spend, its important to keep up your hygeine if you ever want to find a real job and get out of your car.

if you're doing this long term, sell the fit and buy a station wagon/suv/truck even if it's older. get a reliable car with cheap parts. but if you're doing this longer than a few months you'll want something you can lay down in especially during the winter.
>>
it also isnt a bad idea to get a cheap tent and live out of that instead of your car depending on where you live. there's fuck loads of people doing that in my area, there's literal cities of them around the popular camping areas and trailheads here. i usually see the normal/cool homeless in these kinds of arrangements rather than crazies and junkies but again that varies depending on region. in my experience as a hiker passing through they've always been really nice and hospitable, always trying to offer me food and stuff.

The woods are a no go. The fuckheads that run this city will tackle you and beat you to an inch of your fuckin' life, then smack you with a ridiculous fine if you even light a match where they can see it. It's the southwest, so there's no water and high fire warnings CONSTANTLY.

My best bet if I'm camping anywhere would be to just pack up what I need before sundown and try to hide out somewhere off the trail hoping a bear or something doesn't come by.
>>
>>782146
I travel alot and there are these hobo camps everywhere now. And people believe the obama stats of his economic growth and employment stats....
>>
Sell your car and buy a big ass Chevy RapeVan for the extra space. If you have a decent job buy the biggest "box truck" that you can afford. They look like u hauls except that they are all white. If possible get a refergirated unit. Those are insulated and you can hack the generator for indoor power. The possibilites are endless. Best part is you can park behind any store and not get hasseled buy the coppers. Also get a gym membership for showers and shit.
>>
>>782184
yeah i never saw this shit 4 years ago. now there's hundreds of people living at any major trailhead that's near a freeway in my area. its depressing. they can spend around $85 a year on annual camping passes and legally live permanently as long as they switch spots every so often.
>>
>>782197
rapevan is good advice
- reliable
- cheap parts, easy to maintain
- privacy >:)
- you can lay down
- no windows for people to look in and see your shit
- way better fuel economy than camper/trailer/truck/etc

you can easily get a good reliable van that doesn't look like total shit for what you can sell your fit for. it helps a lot to have a vehicle that doesn't look out of place or stand out in your area.
>>
>>782207
I have parked among them and was astonished that my truck wasn't stripped when I returned.

These people are not criminals they are simply homeless. Due to policies. The average family health insurance plan costs 24k per year now and keeps increasing. Thanks obama.
>>
>>782222
>The average family health insurance plan costs 24k per year now and keeps increasing.
Hells teeth! Our family pays less than that in total tax and our healthcare is paid for out of that. Along with other fripperies like schools, roads, hospitals, airports, police, judiciary, social security, army etc.

You guys just insist on doing it the hard way, don't you?
>>
>>782177
why don't you just leave west coast USA? it sounds so terrible

either go east to somewhere sane or go north to Canada. there's basically no law in many parts of BC, the cops are too busy with chinese gangs, natives, somalians, crackheads, 1%ers, etc all trying to kill everybody. most of the province is completely empty crown land where nobody goes
>>
>>781836
overnight parking while sleeping in your vehicle as a "transient" person seems to be illegal in some way or another in most cities.
Either by zoning ordinances regarding public streets. and laws regarding private property, private roads and commercial parking lots.

Walmart has had a longstanding reputation for allowing people to stay the nite in their parking lots, especially truckers.

I was on a long road trip one time and pulled into a 24 hour Walmart for some food. It was about 2:30 AM. I was super tired and had to sleep so I just asked the teller if that let people park overnite in the parking lot. she was like "oh yeah, you're more than welcome to!"
>>
it blows my mind that you yups seriously went inside and asked some shitstain walmart employee if you could sleep in your car please
for fucks sake is this not america? do what ever the fuck you want. some seriously cucked people ITT
>>
Why not just buy a class B camper? They're just vans that you can camp in. They're awesome.
>>

>>

>do what ever the fuck you want
Except be polite to property owners that are doing you a favor. Politeness will get you alot is a country full of entitled white trash.
>cucked
No that's you white boi.
>>
>>782457
Fuck you are retarded. Where exactly did i say dont be polite? Being being rude or saying nothing are two completely different things. Sleeping in your fucking car at walmart without asking someone first =/= impolite. Fuck yourself.
>>
Why don't you just get a job and live in an apartment like a man?
>>
>>781812
>Walmarts and the local truck stop have people doing it.
Those people are usually just passing through, though. Gotta rotate. Don't spend multiple nights at the same Walmart (rarely 2, usually just 1), but you might be able to get away with it at truck stops. I wouldn't ever spend the night at a general rest stop off the interstate.

>Car is a 2008 Honda Fit
Ah, I've got a 2012 Honda Fit that I car camp/sleep in a lot. I don't sleep on my back, but sprawl out on my stomach, so my favorite is to lay down the larger 60/40 side of the back seat split (leave the other up, and also leave my passenger seat alone so I don't have to fuck with what I'm storing there, too), and move the drivers seat up and tilted forward. The first time I slept in it I thought it was going to be hell, but my back didn't hurt, and I've had back pain from every shitty hotel mattress I've slept on. I was so happy with it, that it became my go to sleeping arrangement.

I don't have a lot of stuff or camping things, but you will want the bed to be as low profile as possible (air mattress and regular pads generally made it too tall). You have to remember, there's not a ton a space from the floor (with the back seat laid down flat) to the window and you don't want to be sleeping above or near the window line just for privacy and security. Trucks or vans with built up beds and understorage are awesome, but don't plan on it for your Fit where you sleep. I put down a folded over comforter or two and that bed was super cosy to me. A small camping pad would probably be nice, but an air mattress was too tall. Experiment, but keep it low profile. Get a window screen for bugs, or a small fan/battery setup if you can afford it and want it. Never have opened the hatchback (too lazy to disable the trunk lights). And completely blacking/blocking out a hatchback's windows when you're not just moving through the area seems to be asking for problems. I stored my stuff in a cheap rubbermaid type tub.
>>
>>782491
Rest stops are fucking amazing. You can stay at truck stops as long as you want. You give bad advice.
>>
>>782463
>Sleeping in your fucking car at walmart without asking someone first =/= impolite.
It is, you were just raised in an uncivilized home. Single parent maybe?
>>
>>782491
What I had been thinking about was getting a few of those cheap thermal blankets and black-out fabric for my windows. When it's hot, turn the thermal side out, when it's cool, turn the black-out side out. Maybe get suction cups put on them to stick on the windows, and 1 piece of black fabric to drape behind the driver and passenger seats while I'm in the back of the car.

Found this video helped a bit.

America pays more tax dollars per person for healthcare than any country except Norway and Netherlands. Once you add private spending it gets ridiculous.
>>
>>781843
I'm just going off what i see in my city(Vancouver bc)
1.They take up parking for local residence who actually pay to use those street parking spots.
2.Fire hazards due to cooking/flammable household items being in a vehicle. Hell, a space heater could light up your blanket and kill you and possibly start a house fire near by.
3.Sanitation. People who are living out of their car are gonna be pissing in the streets in the night. And what do they do with their trash?
4.A bunch of people camping on the streets make the neighborhood look bad, depreciates property values and such.
5.No fixed address means they are harder to track for police.

In my city the street campers are mostly left alone. When they are bothered and ticketed they simply move a few blocks over and set up a new camp. From what I've witnessed they're mostly respectful to the community and they don't seem to harm the over inflated housing market that surrounds them. Wish they did harm that market though, this city is bullshit with how high houses are starting to cost. 1.5 million for a shit shack in a crappy neighborhood for no reason besides lolhotmarket.

I don't know where you live, but almost every rest stop directly off the interstate where I've been comes with pic related. And the cops (usually state patrol) drive through the area and will approach people's vehicles and ask them to leave. I was bothered taking a daytime nap once. I'd rather avoid that hassle or potential hassle. Rest stops would be perfect places to chill overnight, but reality is, they do a lot to prevent it in my region.

OP, I also sleep in hotel parking lots.

>>784849
I've considered blackout/reflective for when I sleep in urban areas, but I've never hassled with it. I think for the windshield it would be great, and they already make a lot of those products. I park away from others and relax under a sheet (even when it's hot). Never felt like I wanted more privacy, but I also wasn't living (just camping). It will get hotter than you think in your car, and if you go blackout/reflective, you won't be able to roll down the window and get air. And if you leave it up all day, that's just making a giant, "ALL MY WORLDLY GOODS ARE IN THIS CAR" sign and hoping people (or cops) don't fuck with it. And it will still get hot anyways. Cars just get hot. That's why I suggested the black mesh to keep out bugs and lets you get some air. There's a lot more of an angle to the inner doors/windows than I thought (couldn't hang something straight down for example), and I've considered suction cups, rigid wires/lines, and something like a rain fly on a tent and placing the attaching points in the car with some removable wall hooks. But I also fog up my car like crazy from body heat by the morning, and nothing but steady air flow keeps it cool. Anyways, I guess if you do blackout, it would be more for privacy or sleeping during the day, because it won't do enough to keep your car cool and it will prevent window/air access. Not sure how some of those van dwellers solved these issues (air, humidity, accumulating heat), so they might have good advice.

America is also responsible for about 80% of all total technological advancement in the medical technology and pharmaceutical fields.

Our healthcare is expensive in part because we subsidize the costs for everyone else.

Lived for a year and a half in San Francisco in a 1990 Mazda Miata
Had a hard top, took out the passenger seat and slept curled up on the floor, had a small Zip wood stove to cook
Lived in the parking lot at my job, boss was OK as long as I didn't make a mess, had a shower in our locker room and there was a bathroom in the parking lot
We were down weekends so I could stretch out
I ended up in the car after a divorce, I could give her our house and it's contents, or give her 50% of my retirement for life, I had a year and a half before I hit the Union's 80 and out so I stuck it out
Learned you can make do/get by with a whole lot less than you would imagine
Found every free thing to do in SF and every place that gives free food samples, with a bus pass, I didn't have to move my "house" all around, lots of soup kitchens and places that provide food and have a place you can clean your clothes, rode my bike everywhere
Also learned that Kindle and a library card are some of the greatest things you can have when living in a car
>>
Reminder that even Thoreau built a permanent shelter. Car living should only be a last resort and a temporary solution. A house is one of the few things in life worth paying for (or worth the effort building yourself).

So many fucking homeless people in my city that my local community college let's you park for free, shower in the gym locker rooms, use the bathrooms, as well as the library to charge your cell phone. Also free wifi.

They'd rather you live in your car where no one can see you than on the street, bothering students by begging for change, scaring tourists, and just being a smelly bum.
>>
I been blessed by being able to sleep on a military base. I work at a boiler plant so we have an extra set of gates that the cops don't come in even though the gates are open.

I enjoy these threads greatly just in case I need to start off base. I still have an apartment off base but can rarely go there because my wife beat my ass and has and on and off again restraining order on me.
Thanks again for giving me hope guys.

...Yeah I see what you're saying. I was thinking of dropping my shit off at a storage unit every day that I need to bring my car somewhere. Have 3 plastic tubs for my car. One for food (Could just be a cooler), one for entertainment toiletries etc., and one for clothes. Bedding can be a sleeping bag or a sheet and a pillow or three. Work 9-5ish and drive to my unit, get my tubs and bedding. Drive to Walmart, and sleep. Up by or before dawn. Drop my shit off, go to the gym, shit, shower, and shave. Then back to the storage unit and drop it all off again. Rinse and repeat.

Over the past week I've been looking for all the stuff I can do when I get free time. Dollar theater sounds awesome. Parks, trails, just reading, going to a coffee shop, libraries, going for a run, going to the gym,

>>785781
Pretty inspiring story. Seems like anyone who camps out in their car does it out of some kinda problem they have with someone else. My parent's kinda fucked with me in a few legal ways, so I've cut contact and need to get my finances straightened out.

Not to mention living expenses are fucking ridiculous enough. $400 for rent, $200 for gas and electric and water, etc., $50 on a phone bill, $75 on internet, $200 for car payments, $150 for insurance, $50 for gas in a month, and on and on it goes. Dwindling down paycheck after paycheck.

Anyhow, I imagine I'll get a lot of quality reading time and get to know my city even better. Hell, I'll probably the fittest in my life living off of the food I'm thinking of.

It'll probably be a decent amount of canned food like beans and fruit cocktails. Plenty of discounted bread (whole fuckin' loaf is about 50 cents at Walmart if it hasn't sold in a day). Avocados, apples, bananas, kiwis, etc. I could get my grocery shopping done at Walmart, get something refrigerated there and leave it in the cooler overnight. My work also has a fridge, so I can get a big lunch box and bring some stuff in with me.

Poor American here and the .gov pays for my healthcare 100%. Not being able to afford healthcare is a fucking myth. If you don't make enough to afford a private plan the government will help you pay, or in my case, pay for it fully.

Being a broke American entitles you to a bunch of free shit, including subsidized health care. The problem is when someone can't figure out the paperwork or if they make enough money to afford healthcare, but decide to not get it.

>...Yeah I see what you're saying.
Good luck man. I've still been turning your situation over in my mind. Another reason why blackout stuff would be nice is because the stuff in your car absorbs and radiates heat for quite awhile, but if you're going to be at work, I don't know how obvious you'd want to make black out stuff. So you could also get cheap tinting that you could add... one of those window film sheets that you apply yourself? You can go pretty dark with those, or layer them. And nothing gets rid of nasty hot air quickly in the car like rolling down all the windows and driving on the interstate (or more than 45mph) for 5 minutes. Quicker than AC and better on gas mileage. Easy to do when you're driving to your storage unit.

As for food, does your city parks have little grill areas? Something to consider if grocery stores have manager specials on meat. You can get a pretty nice cut for a few dollars. My sister does this a lot, and in our area, they always seem to mark things down about 2pm in the afternoon on the weekdays, but I know you'll be at work, but don't ignore the meat department just in case (if you have a grill area you can cook it). Also, I used to work at a gas station, and all that food on rollers and donuts? Gets thrown out around 8pm to 10pm. And since gas stations are small, individual places, they don't end up somewhere useful other than the trash can and the employees get sick of picking through free day olds after the first few weeks.

>>786419
Depends greatly on what state you live in, and the methodology used to figure out how "poor" people are isn't necessarily a good gauge for every situation. For example, I could have no income and I still wouldn't qualify for any government assistance in my state (only if you pop out children).

Have you been to a walmart parking lot? That isn't a far fetched story
>>
>>787043
How the fuck would you know? From the shit posted ITT i can only assume you pussies never leave your houses.
>>
>>787043

Nah man, never even seen a walmart in my life.

Walmart is a lawless wasteland, haven't you heard?

Would rather risk getting fined heavily and mugged, than risk someone walking into walmart glancing at me from a distance.

I live in a PNW city that is currently "blowing up" and a lot of the homeless people I know dispose of their trash at the library or other places, trash cans at bus stops etc.
>>
>>786916
boat living and car living are pretty similar and I like both. you get to see more places inland with a car.

almost any yatch that floats is livable, you can get a fixable boat for a couple grand

>>787320
aren't laws prohibiting people from living in their vehicles illegal in US and Canada? I know for a fact that you can't bar people from living in cars in Canada, but cities can pass parking ordinances restricting "oversize vehicles" (RVs) like they do in west coast USA

how do you cook in that kitchen? are you 4 feet tall? it looks like you'd need a chair

Unless this anon used commercial grade adhesives , which are super expensive plus nothing but tounge and groove and mortise and tenon joints everywhere all his work fell apart in weeks.

I'm a millwright and build high end custom furniture so I know a little something about how things go. It looks like a really well thought out and crafted project but there is a good reason custom van work costs so much.

this is my truck currently, been living in bush for 2 months so hadn't been able to work on this.

buying cap and wrapping the panels in carpet

what can you do for privacy? like a better method than curtains to block the windows?
>>
Scout during daylight, then roll up after dark. Leave before dawn. Avoid the really rich neighborhoods, the cops will crack you there even at night.

Depends where you're at but rest stops work. You can tell the people sleeping overnight in the PNW, their windows are fogged.

I've seen people camping at Walmart all the time but I wouldn't leave my car unattended there.

I've car camped a lot but just on road trips because don't want to pay hotel rates. Buy a small piece of land and build your own house, it's a lot cheaper than buying it already built. Some states are way easier than others on the permit deal. Like don't even think about Califa.
>>
>>787043
First time posting in this conversation and I can honestly say that it's ridiculous to say that it's far fetched for someone not to get sleep at a walmart

> bright lights
> people always asking for fucking money
> ghetto employees
>>
Just share a flat with a roommate, nobody needs to live in a car.
>>
>>786868
>Do not try to sleep in your drivers seat because if you get used to that, you can fall asleep fairly easy later on in life while driving

I agree. I was told this before and it makes sense to me.
>>
>>794599
>people knocking on your van to ask for money
>minimum wage employees going near customers unless absolutely necessary
what kind of fantasy world do you live in? also get proper curtains or you'll never sleep well in the city

This is a web site for WalMart's that don't allow overnight parking by state and location. http://www.walmartlocator.com/no-park-walmarts/
>>
>>782222
Wow, that's surprising. Ausfag here and my family's private health plan costs me about $2.5k and shits usually way cheaper in the US
>>
>>796800
That's because Australian health insurance pays on top of Medicare. Most of the costs are covered by ta es with your $2.5k going on fancier rooms than the gov is willing to pay for.
>>
>>796824
Nah my health insurance covers things medicare doesn't touch like dental, optical, emergency(ambulance) and various other bullshit I won't ever use and on top of that only about 3k-4k of my tax bill goes on Medicare spending so a grand total on medical each year of maybe 7k.
>>
>>796876
Sorry I should have phrased it better.

The reason private cover is so much cheaper is because you still get Medicare. The government also subsidises private cover.

But you are still right that US healthcare is stupid expensive >>785132
. I'm just saying you're comparing apples with overpriced oranges.

I have an 07 Fit and its great for sleeping/napping in the back of.
Get your windows tinted as dark as possible. Get window visors so you can crack the windows when its daining. Cut a soft rug (ikea shag rug in mine) to fit the rear area when the seats are flded down. Add a pillow or two and you're set.
>>
>>781839
Even just sleeping in it can be considered loitering in some places.
>>
>>789424
>Unless this anon used commercial grade adhesives , which are super expensive plus nothing but tounge and groove and mortise and tenon joints everywhere all his work fell apart in weeks.

I build film sets as part of a crew all over Europe during the sunny months.
We use regular white glue, even outdoors.
Construction is basically all pine boards, plywood, and butt joints. A lot like American houses are framed.
By the time they are plastered and painted they will be heavy as fuck. So they end up getting dragged around in fields and cement lots because they're too heavy to lift, and have to survive being assaulted by open winds and people slamming the doors and knocking into them etc.

If he used glue and screws, it might actually hold. But it looks like he used nails and I have my doubts on the glue.
>>
>>793955
Curtains are pretty dope though anon. You can always get super dark tint.
