I went to one in the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine a while back. Parking was about 6 km away from the camp. No electronics and alcohol on camp, ppl built a kitchen for 1000+ people and were handing out two meals a day. Clay ovens and shit. After the thing was over ppl stayed on site and removed all trash and renaturized the space. Felt pretty /out/ to me.

There are hippies at rainbows but not all of them are hippies by far. A lot of different kinds of people are present. That includes of cause travelers, nomands, gypsies, artists, hippies, but also a lot of otherwise "normal" people that have a steady job and a city apartment and use these places to get /out/ for a little while. Also a lot of people with family, small children playing inna woods for a month.
And everyone is welcomed home with open arms.
At least that's how it is in Europe, I have no experience with the US gatherings.
As for how /out/ these gatherings are: A majority hikes or hitch-hikes into the gatherings. The location is sometimes so secluded, that you would risk breaking your car or get stuck attempting to drive in.
I myself biked to a gathering 1000km last year.
You will meet some of the most /out/ people you can imagine, enduring harsh winters in self made shelters and with own produce.
I've been to a rainbow community that basically build a small village deep in the fucking Amazon rainforest. And no, those people were by large no hippies.
But there are of cause a lot of "normies" who couldn't handle being /out/ on their own for a longer time.
Rainbow is a big community and you can spend the month without having many out skills yourself. Someone else will help you if you ask.

Because I don't have to unless I'm going MTB. There's a lot of places in WI that are extremely sportsmen friendly. With wolves and elk back in the ecosystem, there's not much we're missing. Camping in 250+ AC. of land 25 miles from the nearest highway leaves you with a lot of possibilities.

probaly just the random musical groups that form spontaneously. So many, but some of the food was delicious like pizza cooked in huge ovens that they built just for the week or popcorn. Not into vegan but even that was good a. The camps get better and better as you hike away from the road. If you go hike in several miles there are some groovy people out there

regarding parasites, vegans generally acquire them the same way everyone else does- when animal shit is used as fertilizer on vegetables that are then eaten raw. If anything vegans have much greater exposure than normal, since undercooked food is the problem, not meat. People don't think to worry about their lettuce or melons or whatever until others start dying from them.
Regarding other pathogens, vegans have just as much fecal coliform and other deadly bacteria as anyone else.
