Done tons of climbing and investigsting old buildings and train tracks. Also know the entire storm drain system of my city. I can travel 10 miles across my city without being seen at all. You have to keep moving though because you run out of oxygen quickly in the tunnels and get dizzy.

Tips: get lockpicks and learn to use them. Dont get caught with them. Better than breaking windows and making noise. Look up bosnian bill on youtube on how to make and use.
Seriously a very underrated skill to have. I always carry a small set at all times innawoods or not.

Storm drains are usually empty. They aren't sewers. Just enter any water run-off pipes in your city, alternatively you could lift up one of those crates on the side of the road that has water flowing under it during a storm. Don't do this during high water levels. If you hear it start raining, gtfo asap.

Don't get caught with them on private property or you might be charged with B&E, My cousin had to do 8 months in prison for it.

Granted he got caught being a nigger and stealing copper pipes but i don't they even charged him with the B&E.

But i guess if you are just exploring abandoned places no one goes to anyway it would be pretty hard to get caught unless your just really dumb about it.

Lots of good stuff to be found if you are willing to keep an eye out. I've spotted places just walking around my neighborhood, such as abandoned warehouses and drainage systems, found this place via Google maps while checking directions to a state game lands. Can also just search for well known spots in your area.

The most important tool for finding places to explore is the willingness to take a look a little further beyond.

Damn, that's pretty awesome. My parents are from Poland so I visit there often, and there's a shit ton of abandoned brick towers everywhere that I'd love to climb. But how do you gain the balls to climb those if you know those handles can break at any time? You don't know if they haven't rusted enough and all it takes is for one of them to be at breaking point, you know?
Damn, any tips for someone who would like to start climbing these things?
>>
>>773399
A Triple Double?!!!?!!

My humble advice - just drive around cities nearby that are older looking or around cities that had industrial companies in the past. You should generally be able to tell by your city if there's cool abandoned places to check out.
I know this sounds useless, but the point is if your city is not sufficiently "old," rural, or industrial enough any place you do find will either be monitored by security or filled with hobos.

It is a former US Air Force nuclear testing facility. They left all the cement foundations, basements, and tunnels in place when they closed the site. It is now a forest with hiking trails, camping, and of course irradiated cement structures that are partially buried.

Most places I've found do not have any sort of active security or CCTV. Notably, for CCTV to be an active response sort of thing someone has to be watching it, which unless it's a site where work is being done is very very rare. Usually your worries are owners, security, or police patrolling a site or an after the fact issue. If you are worried about say, a camera picking up your plate numbers the easy secret is to park away from the site and walk in. If you suspect a site has active security or just nosey neighbors, it is better to hoof it in. Ideally, this is why you case a spot prior so you know the surrounding area enough to leave safely in the event of emergent issue.

>>773366
Case it first, sometimes it's obvious. Don't go in if you think you can't get out. You may have to surreptitiously try doors/gates. Ground floor windows work too.

Oh baybee a triple! I sometimes find stuff online via Google maps or just searching Urban Ex forums and then case the place. Others friends point out. A lot of stuff like storm drains, local spots I find just by keeping my eyes peeled, pic related was literally 5 steps from a well traveled road.

>>773760
Follow up, I have been asked to leave a location exactly once by an owner who was hunting the land.

>>773866
Go in pairs if you can. Always have a phone. Always tell someone where you are going. You have to watch your opsec but if someone doesn't hear from in in say, 24hrs, better to call the cops than be dead.

some gases are heavier than air, and will displace oxygen. these often collect in areas, like mines, where they aren't disturbed. people die all the time from this

To add to this, looking for railroad tracks is important. These will lead you to industrial buildings, which have the highest chance of being disused.

This is the Atlanta Prison Farm. Awesome place, accessible to all. Look it up!

>go explore an elementary school that has been abandoned for 15 or so years
>midnight, new moon, pitch black inside except our flashlights
>we're down the second of three classroom wings, inside a classroom
>our flashlights all flicker and shut off
>oh fuck
>bash them a bit, only one lights back up
>just as it lights, hear a HEAVY sprinting bipedal noise on the roof
>it was definitely at least the weight of a man, not a small creature
>we all freeze and it stops
>suddenly hear it again

We booked it the fuck out, me holding my working flashlight on point, ready to stab anything that got out in front of us. The school is near a creek bottom and forest, with a small field in between. The school itself is on a never-used road, and completely overgrown by brush and saplings. Spoopy. No noises were made. I think I have a bipedal haunting creature for when I'm out in spoopy areas.

Have also explored an old farmhouse with barn and shed in the depths of the woods that has local legends saying it was the home of a family of inbred deformed "goons". It's been abandoned since what looks like the 70s, though. Nothing spooky there.

Climbing/rappelling instructor here, if you're really scared about the structural integrity of something like that, don't climb it.

If you're going to anyways, but you're still really scared, get some 2 inch webbing an learn how to tie a harness and get some climbing rated non-wiregate carabiners.

Walk up to the tower, yank on the lower steps and slowly lower your body weight on to them to see if they'll hold. Once you clip into one, take the other carabiner and clip it to the next rung, repeat.

If one is loose, go to the one above it.

Don't die. If you really think it has a risk of falling apart, don't climb it, please. If you're decently confident, spend the $20 for 10ft of webbing and a few carabiners. Even if you end up not using either of them for this purpose, they're both super handy to have.

I mean, they can be just as strong as locking ones, but have the chance of slipping or being depressed if something along the face you're climbing protrudes out, leading to possible slipping. (and then falling!)

They're fantastic for daily use or attaching chalk bags and such to your harness/belt, but just aren't quite safe enough to use as primary carabiners when you're climbing.

There are also two types of locking carabiners, one that has a spring loaded locking sleeve that rides on top of the gate, and ones that are threaded and you have to screw/unscrew to lock. Spring loaded ones are better for climbing like I described in my other post, as they're much faster to work with, while threaded ones are optimal for use in static positions like at the tops of rappelling courses or used with grounded belay points for climbing.

Good read if you're interested. Piece the url back together

Have been exploring across Eurp since 2008 or so, used it as a medium to get into photography, often post on /p/.

Pic related, abandoned Tucker Sno-Cats in a barn in Belgium. More of my photos here: https://www.flickr.com/j-st/

Mainly seek out industrial buildings, powerplants, factories etc. Currently in the final stages of planning and mapping out a road trip across France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic and Austria for this August hopefully getting in some wild camping and river/lake swimming. Used to do quite a bit of draining but found it got a bit samey with little variety, plus one of my friends slipped and broke his arm and we had to haul the fucker out.

2spooky4u: About 5 years ago I was exploring some of the Maginot line bunkers in North France with close friends, we had walked about 3.5km along the underground railways to a Gun block. We had come in to the complex through a “Caserne” or one of the barrack blocks which are out on a limb. Took photographs of rusty big guns and walked back along the rails, there was a general feeling between the four of us that something wasn’t right, felt a bit uneasy. Back at the caserne, we were setting up a shot with torchlight and I caught sight of a person dressed in white walking away from me, shouted something panicky at the person and at the others who were a few yards away. White figure had fucked off by then, it was the only time I ever lost my bottle and ran, the others followed.

Can’t really explain what it was, it made me shit myself. Bunker was about 6 miles from nearest town, in the middle of woodland, took us an age to find the entrance because of overgrowth.

OhShit: Have a small number of run ins with the Police, German were pretty chilled and just made sure we weren’t Romanian copper thieves, UK cops are usually cool too when you can talk them round and they’re happy you’re not doing illegal things. French are not so cool.

Advice:

Don’t go alone, take a torch, take a mobile phone, don’t take stupid shit like lockpicks, knives / multitools or even matches / lighters unless you’ve got cigarettes too. Shoes are important, I use approach boots that are gore tex lined, solid enough toe for climbing plus they’ll keep you dry. Gloves too, those thin, lightweight builders gloves with the grippy palm are perfect.

Anybody from Denmark here? I went to Værlose Flyvestation yesterday, they have some really nice bunkers and maintenance shacks, along with some plane hangars, which are all great for climbing. There's also and old barracks, which is completely abandoned, and there's not even that much graffiti. All of this is inside the legal perimiter, it's not fenced off.

Further up the road there's another bunker, but also a large fenced complex. I could easily squirm under the fence, but I'm gonna go later with some friends and a mask, cause there's video cameras on the building across the road. It might still be in use, but it's hard to tell. Didn't take pics cause I forgot my phone, but I'll get around to it one day.

Any other danefags that know of good spots on Zealand?

I lost my old phone with photos but there is this abandoned mansion that people broke into all the time, it had hidden rooms and corridors. Pretty soon they blocked everything up but we used an old garden house to rappel up a balcony then we jumped from the side balcony onto the roof where there was a window you could open. Found a bunch of needle, muriatic acid and bleach with some batteries lying around.

Maybe Saturday I'll attempt to make my first mac and cheese that doesn't include orange cheese powder in a foil packet. Should I bring /ck/ along on my adventure?

Yeah, bloody hilarious.

What I found funny was when I visited a former penal colony in Tasmania, Australia and in one of the old cells was a bunch of graffiti. For a second I was shocked until I realised that the graffiti had been done by the prisoners over a hundred years earlier.

Literally etched in stone in Pompeii is what you see written in Sharpie marker on the toilet stall of a high school bathroom.

Don't quote me on this, but I think this tunnel is an offshoot from Governor Gold Mine in Acton.

There was what looked to be a former coyote den nearby, so I didn't want to chance going in at the time.

One of the largest SAC bases is 5 minutes from my house. 75% abandoned, large aircraft hangars, schools, hospital, rec centers, radar centers, atomic warhead storage igloos and underground tunnel networks connecting it all. Spent many a summers exploring.

I would love for someone to go with me. Its an adbandoned Pillsbury factory that opened in the 30s and closed in 2001. Its in Springfield IL in the middle of the ghetto of the city. Pretty sure theres a few groundsmen keeping kids away but for the most part it should be easy to get into. Apparently its been explored thoroughly but no pictures have even been taken on the insides. It was sold in 08 for scrap and has been recently scheduled for demoliton due to mishandling asbestos and improper disposal. Dude was apparently cutting that shit out with a hand knife and just thowing it into trash bags or some shit.
>>
>>781009
Sure you probably see me there. Got a tip that hunters use the section in winter, might not want to get caught in the crossfire. (technically the tip was "during hunting season")

The tunnel is cool and chilly, even when the sun is shining outside on a hot day.
>>
You guys should NOT go into storm/sanitary sewers.

I'm confined space trained and you couldn't pay me to go down without proper PPE/monitoring.
>>
>>785681
Anytime anon. I do like when I can make someone actually laugh out loud from something I posted on the internet.
>>785903
Agreed
It's a great way to get a lethal infection. The amount of precaution the pros do to be safe can't be replicated by amateurs.
>>
>>785912

Lethal infections are the least of my worries usually.

Falling and asphyxiation are the two main concerns. In storm sewers you can easily be swept away by a surge from upstream.

I'm an engineer so I don't do confined space entries often, but my older coworkers have good stories.

Can you share any sites in Austria? I'm here for a year and I've not found much in the way of abandoned buildings. Back home (UK) there's heaps of old industrial buildings and the like, but here I guess it all got bombed or Mashall Aided into new life.

So I found an abandoned firehouse while on a walk last week.

One of my coworkers was the engineer for a large stormwater pump station. To access the wet well(where the water comes in), you needed to descend a large stairway marked with "CONFINED SPACE ENTRY ONLY" signs.

Contractors usually disregard these signs whenever possible (muh profit). One guy went down and didn't come back up. His friend went down after him and died as well.

The wetwell was still under construction. Exposed patches of soil offgased into the area and displaced the oxygen.

You should never go in if someone's in an emergency.

Pic related. Me in some water system vault.

What sort of gas mask would protect you from this? And is there no warning for if you're experience this sort of thing? Is it just one breath and you're rip?

Please tell more, I'm interested!
>>
>>786396

No gas mask necessary in most cases. A vault like this doesn't have many hazards besides the long fall, but you can see my line which is attached to a tripod.

Air monitoring is done before and while you're in the space. Conditions are constantly monitored by an attendant. Someone usually shouts down every minute or so to see if you're still conscious as well.

More hazardous locations will have you carrying your own personal monitor and respirator. From what I understand you'll usually have time to get out. If not, you can be pulled out with the tripod winch.

If you REALLY don't know what the hazards are like in a chemical spill, you'll have dedicated hazmat teams come in with Class A suits and SCBA gear. I'm 40 hour HAZWOPER trained as well but don't really do any of that stuff.
>>
>>786378
>>786411

"Contractors usually disregard these signs whenever possible"

Any contractor disregarding those signs is getting fired by his foreman at the end of shift fukkin fact

Takes 5 minutes for a tester to walk to the hole and sniff it
>>
>>786411
I see! I meant in an urbex sort of situation, in which you might be underground and encountering any sort of gas. Also, what about things such as asbestos or something similar?

As far as air test kits or readers/monitors, are they all super expensive or are some cheap enough to be accessible for the average person?

Any knowledge you have would be super helpful!

I've been places. Sadly, there are no pictures, because the places I've seen are technically illegal for me to be in, and I'm not sure on statute of limitations.

Basically, several locked or abandoned houses or government buildings, late at night.

This one time, when I was 5, I got chased out of a crumbling house by a crazed junkie in a bedsheet.

a gas detector / o2 meter, and a rescue bottle or scba,

personally i use a papr when going into any industrial buildings( perk of my old job was a papr) with a back up dual cartrage half mask. , and we all have gas meters and 5 min self rescue scba.

I worked for a industrial safety company, and we would provide confined space and hazwoper services.

got some nice gear as a result.
