Why does /out/ hate campfires?
>>

Fuck off
>>
Crude, unnecessary, messy and dangerous.

No fun allowed.
>>
I guess it's because it distrubs the landscape and people who light those up rarely clean their shits after they're done goofin around.

It can be real comfy tho

some fagots told me off weekend just gone for having one on my property
>have big property in bushland australia
>have a few mates round for beers that weekend
>sink piss all day
>get a fire going early in the morning
>house is just out of site, and campfire area is close to a trail
>2 guys and 1 girl come up to us and tell us to clean up and put the fire out
>only rubbish is empty beer bottles put back into the 6pack holders, which will later be transferred to the bin that is next to us all.
>fire is kinda big, but fuck it we have water and sand. everything is green aswell so its all good.
>these fucking hippy's tell us to fuck off, as if they own the land.
>the trail is actually a national park, but my property is off it, as is the fire
>tell them to get fucked
>they sit on this fucking trail about 10 meters away and start playing this drum
>first 20 mins was ok, they were playing some bob marley, and otehr groovy shit. then it got bad, so we got the speakers cranking
>other mate did a burnout in his ute next to the fireplace
>hippies call the cops
>cops tell the hippies to fuck off
>1 of the guys and the girl actually cry because they think were fucking nature up
>they leave,
>have beers with cops

which one of you fags told me to put my fire out. please post your pic for all to see.

What are you talking about?
Campfires are great
Just don't be reckless and stupid about it.
>>
I don't hate campfires, I love them, but I hate faggots who don't know how to do campfires.

Don't fucking play lumberjack and chop down green trees when there is dead wood laying everywhere.

Don't leave the fire burning when you leave. I see people doing this all the time.

If there's a campfire ring somewhere, use it, don't leave black circles on the ground everywhere. Clean up after yourself.

Don't burn a fire when it's obvious you shouldn't, when it's too dry.

Lots of people don't understand that you can camp without a campfire. It's a luxury and an accessory to camping, not something to get drunk around and leave trash around your still-burning fire when you leave the camp in a mess the next morning.
>>
>>769898

I dont hate campfires, they're just forbidden in the entirety of my country.

Except on private properties I guess, but I dont have one of those.

So no campfires for me.

Also I feel like a lot of people are keen on making fires just because. I've never been in a situation where I needed a fire, save perhaps for Finland, but everyone makes those there, and there are specific places already set up.
>>
Campfire general?

>18 years old
>about 20 of us go camping to celebrate the end of high school
>bring a blonde girl ive been wanting to rail
>someone manages to get a trunk full of beer
>secure a few sites, one is near the park road
>ome friend immediately starts building a fire even though it's like 3pm
>puts way too much wood on, fire is sky-high
>park ranger drives past at the worst moment
>doubles back, walks onto our site
>tells us how stupid the fire is
>sees a beer in someone's hand
>starts asking us for ID's
>calls the actual cops on us when he realizes we are all underage
>real cops show up
>they make us dump out 15+ cases of beer in the grass, one by one
>i have weed in my pocket that i hide under a log when cops are hassling someone else
>i get up because im nervous
>cop looks under my log
>finds my weed
>i deny that its mine
>starts searching every tent
>literally calls in a K-9 unit
>dog comes and spends an hour tearing my car to shreds
>goes through each tent
>finds my friend's stash of various drugs (weed, lsd, ecstacy)
>friend takes the blame for everything
>we all get $350 drinking tickets
>have to cobble together money to go bail friend out of jail
>it gets dark out
>everyone depressed as fuck
>no beer
>go to sleep
>dont get laid
>drive home the next day in my torn up car
>allergic to dogs so i sneeze the whole way home

Not against campfires at all. Just like >>770054 and >>770152 said, be responsible with your fires and all will be good.
Pic related, its a camp that some good friends made in a national forest. Fires every night for comfort and warmth with the fuel being supplied by fallen branches that cross or block the trail nearby.

Because there's literally no reason to have campfires, and fires are destructive to the natural ecosystem. If it's going to be too cold to go then just don't go or bring better clothes or maybe a propane stove for heat. There's no reason to go when it's that cold except your personal pride.

I can maybe understand in an emergency situation, but if you left the house intentionally and it wasn't something like a plane crash then that's on you to have a signaling device in case of emergency like a satellite phone.

The reason specifically that the fires are so bad, in addition to them having the chance to spread, is that there are millions of dendrivores that eat the decaying wood and fungus like lousce and millipeades and then from there the predators that eat then like centipeades and wasps, many other dendrivites. When you burn the wood it destroys the matter and the energy it contains that they depend on. Most of the energy and nutrients is converted into smoke and blows away in this unusable entropic form.

Read a little more about fire ecology before you make blanket statements.

I enjoy campfires for roasting smores and for light warmth on cold nights. I go winter camping in Utah a lot so it's nice to have. In the winter there's little if any chance of having a campfire get out of control. Not too worried about the fungus eating the wood, there's plenty for them to work on.

I like how you think a wood fire "disrupts the natural ecosystem," but youre OK with a propane stove, as if extracting all that natural gas and oil from the earth that lead to the propane byproduct dont "disrupt the natural ecosystem" too.

You also seem to think people only have fires when it's cold. I burn them all summer long. I light a fire every morning to cook, and at night my friends and i will burn half a tree even if it's 80 degrees outside.

I bring my bicycle and bring a backpack with a hoodie and a wool blanket, a knife, 2 pounds of nuts, a fishing pole and a bottle to hold water. I usually ride about 50 miles out into a national forest and go as deep as possible. If the fishing is good I stay for up for a month, if no fish in the streams I find I will stay til my nut sack is empty. Yes forever alone, nobody is willing to camp the way I camp, I build my own shelters and fires etc and bring almost nothing. People don't think it's fun but I do.

Generally, unless you know what you're doing, campfires are not good leave-no-trace practice. The general view under leave no trace is that things like fire rings and burn scars disrupt the natural beauty of a place. Sometimes there is the issue of not enough wood in the area to meet demand for fires (always use deadfall if possible, not living trees) or there may be a risk of wildfire in the area. It may also simply be illegal to burn fires in an area (but I guess that very rarely stops anyone from /out/). There are ways to do campfires in the bush that are leave no trace, but the common idea of a campfire is not leave-no-trace friendly. Here is what I believe to be a pretty nice guide by the US forestry service. http://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/pdfpubs/pdf97232815/pdf97232815pt01.pdf
