Two tourists visiting Yellowstone National Park were ticketed earlier this week after they allegedly put a baby bison inside their vehicle over fears the calf was freezing, witnesses say.

>allegedly
>no ranger sir, that bison opened the trunk and hopped in on it's own

try that crap with a moose and see what happens, kind of surprised the mama bison didn't have something to say about it

Poor thing was probably really cold. I'd have done the same thing but wouldn't have told the rangers. I'd have brought it home.

Hopefully they didn't drive off with the calf in their vehicle and separate it from its mother. If they did then I think they should have to pay all rehabilitation costs for someone to bottle-feed it until it can be weened and then all feed and stable costs until it is old enough to be returned to a wild herd on its own.

thing is, the cold will harden or kill this calve, if this happens all the time no animal will be prepared for their next winter and their would be mass dying among the bisons

I can't find it now, but some one posted some Yellowstone suggestion cards from visitors that might be the dumbest things I've ever seen. Some of my favorites include requests to see the pens where the Rangers keep all of the parks wildlife and that the park should move the Deer Crossing signs somewhere safer so the deer wouldn't try to cross busy roads.
>>
>>767224
Beavers completely radically change their environment, making it impossible for more arid creatures to live in and more hospitable for aquatic animals. There are entire shrub valleys destroyed and turned into marshlands by beaver dams.

In the same way, we destroy environments for certain animals and create new environments that better suit others (namely humans, squirrels, raccoon, deer, rats, mice, cats, possum, rabbits, etc)

And ban them from ever returning.

If they can't pay just seize all their economic assets and kick them of the plane in their home country.
Stopping the plane before kicking them out is optional, don't want to stay on the ground too long and waste fuel.

>>
explanation about it from FB:

Thanks to everyone who's taken the time to read this post and share our safety messages. We're reading through your comments and noticed many people asking why the calf had to be euthanized.

In order to ship the calf out of the park, it would have had to go through months of quarantine to be monitored for brucellosis. No approved quarantine facilities exist at this time, and we don't have the capacity to care for a calf that's too young to forage on its own. Nor is it the mission of the National Park Service to rescue animals: our goal is to maintain the ecological processes of Yellowstone. Even though humans were involved in this case, it is not uncommon for bison, especially young mothers, to lose or abandon their calves. Those animals typically die of starvation or predation.

Buffalo Veal.

Why is everyone assuming the calf was with the herd? Is this /peta/? If the mother let them take it then it was probably already abandoned.

The baby bison is inconsequential. The rage should be coming from them putting themselves in a position to be attacked by the mother which could have resulted in 2 dead people and 2 dead bison.

no they put it down because it was abandoned by its mother after the incident and after multiple attempts to reunite the little doobie with the herd it kept getting rejected. then they kept finding it wandering roadways and approaching people. which for behbeh buffalo isn't too horrible but that animal couldn't be allowed to mature in the park.

Bison are diseases reservoirs for brucellosis which kills the first born calf of bovines (bison and cattle) and is passed down from mother to calf. If it's a carrier, it couldn't be permitted to leave Yellowstone as a brucellosis outbreak could cost nearby ranchers a shit ton of money. Since it would have to be quarantined, and there is no quarantine facility set up, and Yellowstone isn't in the habit of saving individuals...they euthanized it.
>>
>>767716
thanks for explaining, I did not know that. wow, too fuckin bad. I do hope they ate the poor fella then, not waste the wonderful creation given to us.
>>
>>767735
Brucellosis is pretty interesting. The first born is a still birth, and the afterbirth on the calf is full of the bacteria. So when the herd gathers to lick the baby so that it wakes up and breathes, they get infected too. It only causes the first born to still birth, so subsequent births are also infected through the placenta. Another method of transmission is carnivores and scavengers, like eagles and vultures, can carry away carcasses and drop them off in another field infecting another herd.
>>
>>767707

Not sure why people are getting worked up.

Unless bison are very different to cattle the cow would have been close by and got itself involved. No mad bison cow means calf was abandoned. Abandoned calf means dead calf. Along comes tourist and fucks with calf. Calf ends up dead. In the end the tourist left no trace.

The only thing making the tourists getting involved not a good idea are the quarantine rules preventing the calf being removed from the park. If the calf could have been removed then picking it up was the right thing to do. As it is picking the calf up was inconsequential.

I want to blame it on MacArthur, but they've been making a big deal over climbing Fuji since god knows when, and Takaou has a temple from the 700s that 2 million people visit every year. On the other hand, lots of mountains and camping spots outside of Hokkaido are pretty fucking domesticated, if you feel me. Still, they're good about not leaving their shit everywhere. >>
>>769250
Wow. I hate people who have to get "the perfect shot." Fucking plebs.
>>
>>770028
Very few people would know that the parks quarantine measure prevent the calf being taken away and looked after. Lacking this knowledge the tourists had the options, leave calf to die or pick it up and maybe save it. They were trying to do the right thing and did no harm.

If the park managers thought reunion was worth a shot how is it the tourists fault. And if the carcass was important the managers would have dumped it in the bush, if it wasnt they would have thrown it out. Who is to say what they decided but either way it has nothing to do with the tourists.
