What's a recommended brand? I was eyeing this Yamaha one:

Honda and Yamaha are both real tough to beat. Fuel, oil change once a year, and it'll run.
What are you powering with it?
2kW is a good size for most applications where you need a generator. AC units, you'll need more power (or parallel two 2kW units).
I have two Generac iX2000's. Got them used for super-cheap. One works great, other not so much. Think i've narrowed it down to stator windings on the one that doesn't work, just haven't taken the time to go through it in any more depth than that.
The functioning one has been real reliable otherwise.... great on fuel.
There's a bunch of cheaper chinese ones that get rebranded... Polaris, Husky, and Ryobi gens are all Kipor motors/electronics.
Let it idle for a few minutes to warm up before you plug a load into it, and also unplug the load and let it idle for a minute or two before you shut it down.
Install an hour meter to track usage, do an oil change yearly regardless of how much it's used. (I need to do that on mine, as soon as I get the motorcycle engine off the bench.)

Why? what for?
why not a harbor freight generator? even there 7000 running watt is only 600 dollars. And inb4 you say those pred engines are shit. they are honda clones, as long as you aren't a complete fuck nuts and can change an airfilter/oil and empty the gastank/carb before going into storage, should have no problems. the fuel lines are kinda craptastic, but will last easily 2 years without problems.

my window unit/ac unit runs on 800watts. and its kinda too big for my 10x12' bedroom. I think it would run similar effectiveness in an RV.
problem with RV's is heat exchange too, IE; not having insulation to help hold the cool in, and hot out.

Honda is best brand, but Yamaha ain't bad.

I agree with the people who say Honda and Yamaha. They're badass, but they are a bit pricey. If you want to go the big, clunky and not very pricey route, I would recommend Champion. They won't run a lot of electronics that need a super clean power supply, but I've used them and the only issue I've had is the pull cord breaking. When that happens, just replace it with paracord.

>why not a harbor freight generator? even there 7000 running watt is only 600 dollars.
Those are 3600RPM open-frame generators... they're loud as fuck and suck fuel. Most of the inexpensive "construction-site" generators are this type.
The Honda, Yamaha, or my Generac (or the various Kipor rebranded gens) are inverter-type generators - more conversion going on between the stator and the AC outlet, but the power is a lot cleaner and because the inverter/computer can throttle the motor up or down to match the load, they're a lot quieter and more fuel-efficient.

>my window unit/ac unit runs on 800watts.
Issue isn't necessarily the wattage, but power factor. Compressor and motor are a capacitive load, generator/electronics in it have to work "harder" to produce that wattage.
Startup current is also pretty big and can trip breakers or bog down the motor, voltage starts to crowbar, AC tries to draw more current compounding the problem... just doesn't work well. Generator power isn't the same as the wall power in your house.
I personally wouldn't run any AC unit on less than a 3kW unit.
>problem with RV's is heat exchange too, IE; not having insulation to help hold the cool in, and hot out.
This is also a thing.
My mom has a yamaha 3000i something. It's been reliable. My only first hand experience with it is that you better know what good dead lift form is if you want to get that thing into the back of your truck by yourself.

What a life
I had an old Yamaha ef1000, it was surprisingly quiet if i put it inside a shed or large box you couldn't even hear it, they're great for car camping. A gallon of gas used to get me about 8hrs of run time. But what would be really fucking cool would be to get it working with wood gas... like this.

Smaller gen could use a smaller burner and less wood.

Holy shit, that's a generator?
Wow, I might be interested in one for my upcoming trip.
