Why aren't there any low cost am recievers that run on batteries?

Do you have a Dollar General or Family Dollar nearby? They sale one for like $10 that runs on AA batteries. The DG and FD stores are a bastion for old technology. The one near my house still has VHS tapes for sale. I bought a casette adapter there the other day for like $2.

I don't know what you want it for but if it's for camping check out ultralight DXing. These dudes are serious about small AM portable receivers.

I've got pic related that I bought at a Kmart for $10. Best AM reception I've ever experienced. Runs off 1 AA and the battery lasts a couple months.

Pretty much any sony analog. They come in a ton of sizes and configurations under 30 bucks. Pick according to your needs. Bigger radios generally have bigger ferrite rods which means more AM sensitivity.

Is am radio going to die? What's the advantage of transmitting in am over FM?
>>
>>767198
Fm radio is line of sight so if you're on the other side of the mountain you're SOL. Am will still work and can travel much frather in the right conditions. Also am antennas are a little bar inside the radio while fm needs that telescoping whip that always breaks. It's also and extemely simple circuit.
That said, the sound is worse. It's prone to interference which is a problem since most of us are surrounded by electronics.

Even shortwave radio still has its niche. Am won't die but it's definitely on the decline.
