Doing AT thru hike next year. Any recommendations? Idgaf about gps or altimeter. Time and barometer most important. Is there any hiking barometer that is small and not battery powered?
>>
>>762646
Use the compass to find a wrist that can actually handle that watch faggot.
>>
>>762646
Specs says 12 month battery life in time mode. The fuck does that mean? What if altimeter, barometer, and everything is turned on?
>>
>>762737
>if everything turned on?
about 72 hours

Also, watches, gay as fuck.
>>
I'm thinking of buying a watch that has an altimeter. Do you guys have any suggestions or brands to avoid? I don't really care about it being too fancy or fashionable.
>>
>>762807
Why is altitude important to you? You could get a proper gps, use your phone or use a compass and a topo map and get a good idea of it.
>>
Im taking an ACMG course, and in addition to a gps they want us to have an altimeter, and I need a new watch anyways.
>>
>>762805
Can you turn off the altimeter to save bettery, or set the barometer to only check every X hours to also save battery?

Don't know what you're talking about with switching the other features off. I think they just sleep if you're not on the tabs, but I've never "turned off" these features and have had the watch operating normally for about 6 months. I also have the storm alarm on most of the time.

Casio literally has hundreds of variations of watches. How the fuck do they not have 2-3 of their most popular styles with practically every combination of features? Give me a 5610 with a vibration alarm, or another with a thermometer.

They force you to buy the more expensive model, that's how it works. They cripple their cheaper models like every other manufacturer, be it navigation devices, watches, phones or anything.

>>
Do any of you actually use the altimeter, thermometer, or barometer of hiking watches while doing multi day hikes on marked trails? Of those, the barometer seems like the only one I'd like to have.
>>
>>765354
Altimeter might be usefull to find out where you are in relation to the predicted 0° celcius level, but I just use topo maps for that. Barometer is actually usefull to prepare for incoming rain/snow, maybe an anemometer too. I've never checked the temp while /out/ tho, it's sort of irrelevant imo.
>>
>>762038
I'm very bad at keeping watches intact, I scratch the glass, overwind them, the straps break and the watch falls off never to be seen again, so instead I buy one of these every three or four years, according to how long the thing lasts, if the strap breaks and I can't fit another I will glue the watch body to an old leather key ring and use it on my motorcycle keys as a way to know the time without having to fiddle with my gloves.

In short I love these things.
>>
>>762038

I've had one of these for like ten years. They're fucking indestructable.

Altimeter is extremely underrated. You won't care about distance, just how many more vertical feet to the next peak.
>>
>>767143
This, altimeter is hugely helpful if you are reading a topographic map, it helps you verify your location if there isn't many monuments around

calculating wind chill
>>
>>769247
In 20 years of hiking and climbing I've never once needed to know the wind chill, I'm not saying this to be an ass but if it's too cold to carry on you should find shelter and get your core temp back up before moving on

I've got a key chain thermometer that I almost never look at, I just tend to trust my instincts about this stuff.
>>
>>765354
Nope
>>
>>769247
Yeah but that's something you'll do when you are already sorted, like a passtime when you have your shelter fixed and you are just waiting for your water to boil. As something fun to do, yeah, it might be fun, but you'll need an anemometer with you as well

So my Seiko kinetic has started doing the 2 second jump thing and I'm pretty sure the capacitor has finally kicked it - it's 7 years old!

Looking for a temporary watch with following criteria:

- Digital
- 38mm case size (or similar, not some big hulking thing)
- Alarm

Cheaper the better, and I'm a europoor so please no US specific deals.

Will be buying a SKX013 (smaller brother of the SKX007 pic attached) as soon as I have the disposable income.

The 5600s are not bad but they get hickups of some miliseconds and fall behind.

Also the time is always changed a bit when they fade to sleep mode, if you leave them for long periods of time the time will change and you'll have to adjust it.

Also:

>No carbon fiber strap

>No steel hardcase on back

>Not atomic

Yeah, no.

Maybe he likes to use it, hence why he bought the watch in the first place? I keep seeing this attitude on /out/ where people can't fathom owning or doing expensive stuff for any reason besides showing off. What's up with that?

The scope and rifle I hunt with are worth $2,500 and relatively few people ever see that. Is this also confusing?
>>
>>778216

It's not just expensive things, it's stuff which is unnecessarily fancy, ie taking a $5000 watch innawoods, or using a needlessly complicated and flashy stove setup (jetboil) just to boil water instead of using a fire.

Being /out/side should be about simplicity, and doing things yourself, with your own hands. If you're carrying stupid poof gadgets then you're entirely negating the whole point.
>>
>>778216

But having said that, an expensive scope would be something quite apropos; there's nothing simpler that a scope is needlessly replacing.

What would draw /out/'s ire is if you had one of those guns that aims and shoots for you.

Does that make sense? It's important to define the quality of our hate.

Don't need much else.
