Who here has made a sheath for one of these puppies? I need some ideas, bros.

PS: I cannot work leather ;_;
>>
You're better off just getting a bag for it. Or building a case out of wood. Curved blades are a bitch to sheath.

I keep all my carving gouges/spoon knives in a little box I made that stores them all vertically. Essentially a lot of little cubby holes
>>

sheath is to protect the cutting edge, not you.. in that case. Go to the hardware store and get a small length of plastic tubing, and cut a slit down the middle. or some of that black window screen spline. normally has a slit already premade down the middle of it. or you can get some of that protective floor mat, locks together with itself. its closed cell foam.. basically just carve a channel of your knifes shape into it, and use it as a box sorta?

1. This knife is razor sharp and I intend on maintaining that. 2. That curved tip would do its best to eviscerate said bag every time I try to pull it out.

I basically wrapped duct tape around it into a ball for the time being but it looks ghetto as fug. Shame, this tool would be great for taking out into the woods and carving out spoons from green wood, but the shape is almost too wacky to take /out/.
>>
>I need some ideas, bros.

nest the blade edge down in some thermoplastic then retain with some kind of fold over fabric with poppers or a zip. Leather would be ideal but plenty of stuff would work, heavy canvas would also be nice.

A friend made one from a round plastic container that he got when he bought earplugs from a drugstore. Just cut a tiny slit on one side for the blade. It fits the curve of the blade snugly, is sturdy and safe and weights approximately 10 grams.

Ugly, though.
>>
It's a Mora hook knife, once that thing dulls, which is damn quick, it's a good paperweight.

Make a box
>>
Just wrap it in a strip of leather.

>run strip of leather up the back of the handle and up the outside of the crook to the tip
>once you reach the tip, begin wrapping the leather around the blade
>Wrap the entire blade back to the handle making sure the leather overlaps on every loop so the whole blade is covered
>tie off at the base of the blade

I can show you mine after work if that doesn't make sense?
>>
On the topic, which of the two, 163 and 164 if generally preferred over the other?

This but use thick felting instead of leather? That's what I'm planning on doing in a couple of weeks.

If you're right handed, 164, so you can press your thumb on the spine.
>>
>>743836
Ray Mears just came out of one.
Ben Orford just uses a simple leather strip and wraps it.
>>
You can improvise a sheath for a common knife by folding a sheet of paper over the blade so that it fits its shape, then cover it with insulating tape and finish it by passing it quickly over a flame
>>
I wrap mine in tape.

This is the first thing I tried. But the more radical curve of my particular hook knife always resulted in the poky end going through the sheath when I tried to slip my duck tape sheath.
>>
Take some canvas if you want (I'd recommend leather to be honest) and just wrap it and allow for a space button/string whatever you want to tie it/close it. I have made one and it was easy enough
>>
>>743876
BTW I bought some instamorrph and I will post pics of how this turns out.
>>
>>746283
Make like a little cardboard box and wrap it (the box) in tape.
>>
>>743836
try make/buy one of these, if you buy, you can just put in all the small tools you need for bushcrafting instead of a spanner set of course,

its like who ever made this kit, was new or something.

yea, i didn't over think it. For all we know someone just put a random bunch of tools together for the generic google photo.

I rubbed some olive oil on the blade to act as a mold release. Turns out it didn't need it, but at least it offered some corrosion protection as you'll later see.

In goes the boiling water. The plastic instantly melted and stuck to the spoon and the sides of the bowl, which initially gave me concern, but as it cooled it no longer stuck to anything but itself.

Out it comes ready to be molded. I realized I made way, way too much. But the good thing is this stuff can be melted and re-melted and used over and over again.

At first the stuff is too runny. As it cools, it transitions to a silly putty consistency, then a claylike consistency. It's easiest to work when it starts turning opaque. Otherwise it doesn't keep its shape.

Further manipulating it. I want it to fit tightly around the blade, so I don't need another mechanism to keep it on.

I dipped the knife and plastic in the hot water several times. This made the outside soft enough to smooth over a bit, while it still kept its basic form.

I am delighted with the results. The tightness of the fit means the sheath stays on unless you want it to come off. I will never need a rubber band to keep it on like I had feared. It snaps on and off with an indelible, satisfying 'click'.

The only unforeseen thing was that its short time in the wet plastic was enough to rust the knife up a bit and give it a patina due to the primitive blade steel. That's fine, I think it looks cooler this way.
>>
>>746355
that's cool, well done
>>
>>746283

Rounding the tip was the first thing I did to mine. There's no reason for it to be pointy other than to fuck up sheaths and damage carvings.
>>
>>746355

Nice man, glad it actually worked.

I find so much use for the stuff, I take a tiny grippy of the stuff hiking and often find a use for it.

If a critical bit of kit breaks like the waist buckle on your pack it could seriously save your butt.

Why not just wrap a long piece of leather around it?
>>
I plan on ordering one of these whenever I get a hook knife:
