Hey /out/, new here but a lover of most things /out/doors, my favourite being travelling to and staying in Bothies, has anyone else ever been to a Bothy here? I'm sure there must be a few of you so please share experiences, what gear and food you bring, anything at all!
Picture: Staoineag Bothy, been 3 times

Fuuuuck, that's gorgeous; where's that? Do you boil water from the river or is there a burn nearby?
I've stayed in a good few bothies, though I wouldn't consider myself a bagger. I've got a friend who's done nearly all of the MBA ones.

I spent a weekend in the Grwyne Fawr bothy in the Brecon Beacons. Lovely area, right next to a reservoir. I love all of the messages that are left behind, some great stories.

Plural bothies, singular bothy.
>>
You have convinced me to move to Scotland. It is so pretty, my family is Scottish blood, and I am wedding a gal with U.K. citizenship. Any jobs?
>>
>>738008
been to the one on the south eastern shores of Loch Lomond a few times but it's a real fucker to find - even if you know where to look. For those that don't know, bothy locations tend to be sortof secret and you either find them by chance or go with someone who knows where one is. There's another further north along the shore directly on the west highland way route but I've only chilled there for a bit, never stayed.
>>
>>742856

Is it just to stop tourists and people overusing them? Is it really that people wouldn't tell you or is it more like people just don't like to openly advertise where they are?

Are they always open to the public or are some on private land that you're not allowed to use?
>>
>>743018
scotland has freedom to roam, there is no private land that you're not allowed to use
>>
>>743816

Yes you can camp on private land but that doesn't mean you have the right to enter any building that you see. You can't just waltz into someone's living room and set up your tent.
>>
>>741515
Minimal jobs. Steelworks are being sold and the oil rigs are cutting due to the slump in oil prices. Larger companies are based in England.

I was looking for jobs for months after graduating in engineering before finally having to move to Nottingham for employment.

I've stayed in Strathcallieah bothy, place was fucking gorgeous. Guy lived there for 30 years and he painted most of the inside. feels a bit eerie though.

No photos

I've been to Camasunary in Skye twice, it's a great bothy right next to the mighty Black Cuillin. Pic related.
>>
>>740281
holy SHIT That's gorgeous, is it open to the public?
>>
>>744084
unfortunately for you no.
>>
>>743912
If the building doesn't have a permanent residence and the doors unlocked then you can just waltz in, so long as you don't wreck the place. Same rules apply as to the outdoor code.
>>
>>745898

Ok so you're hiking along the coastline, come across >>740281

but apparently >>745852
it's not open to the public.

huh?

true but it has a locked door, and it is only accessible by boat.

As someone who lives in Edinburgh I always find it amusing when tourists, usually Americans, proudly brag that they have Scottish ancestry... Why would I care? I live in Scotland. I'm surrounded by Scottish people.
>>
>>746237
Welsh bro here. We get the same every year, if you stand within half a mile of Caernarfon castle on a gloomy summer's day all you can fuckin' hear are thick the yank accents bellowign out of the tatty giftshops telling the pavement about how *magical* this place is, about how some convict ancestor of theirs 8 generations back was Welsh and their middle name is Llywelyn
>>
>>746237
my girlfriend told me a story about some woman tracing her family tree back to Scotland and ended up near lochinver and told a local that her great great whatever was living on this place near the coast, when she pointed at the place where the house was suposed to be it turned out it never exsisted.

Anyone tried the Hutchison Memorial Hut bothy in the cairngorms?
Might be looking to spend a few days there.

Being scottish in the southern states of the US gets you all the drink, they seem to cum themselves when you say anything "scotch" and so help you god if you forget to watch your words and ask for a wee measure of something

This is a best guess from the photo :) its a refold structure. The red dashed lines are axial planes. Ive used the dark, likely mafic, layer as a marker. I might be wrong as I'm guessing from a photo but i hop that helps

Oban bothy at head of loch Morar
>>
What do you burn in the fireplace? Weeds? Loam? I see no trees there.
>>

We came by canoe so carry fuel (charcoal) was not an issue.
>>
Scotland looks nice, but where are all the trees and forests and vegetation? It all just looks like sparse grass from what I can tell
>>
>>751649
The west highlands were deforested and overgrazed by sheep and deer in the past and is a sparse but beautiful desert. The central highlands still has ancient Boreal forest. Have a look at the cairngorm national park.
>>
>>746443
Kinda related.

Does Wales have anything similar to bothies lying around? Of all of the British Isles, I'm most interested in Wales and if there were a similar system, it would seal the deal for a good backpacking round the country.
