Scales came yesterday. Black walnut strips from amazon. They were only like $8/ea, not exactly presentation grade but I think they'll look good with lots of sanding and some linseed oil.

I actually am making an "EDC carry" case out of a very small Samsonite bag ( I got it as a gift; I think it was supposed to be for business people but it came just like a purse ) but it has almost no room in it. Normally I keep my keys attached to a very small $1 pocket knife from Dollar Tree that goes in the exterior-exterior left-breast pocket ( the left breast pocket has a second small one on the outside ) so I'm thinking a small keychain light would be a good option for me. A headlamp is something I plan on getting for my camping/bug-out gear tho.

That knife is designed for fighting/military, and has a stick tang. It'll get you camping jobs done, and if your not beating it up, it should serve you well. It's just not as robust as full tang.

I've got one, it performs like the normal Mora companion but the grind in the belly is a bit shallower which I like, despite the hype, most of the time I prefer an ffg to a scandi ground knife but this knife sorta gives you an option to use both, scandi whittling tight against the guard and general slicing with the nose/belly.

It's a very good high carbide stainless, holds an edge on par with good S30v but is a fair bit tougher, best is very subjective though, it's one of the better all round "super stainless steels" but it will still run a higher risk of chipping out when compared to plain carbon steel knives and won't take the same shock or prying loads but will hold a working edge significantly longer if used as a cutter and not a beater plus it's damn near rust proof.
So yeah, I wouldn't be batoning with it regularly unless you've got gear to potentially sharpen chips out but for general camp duties it should be fantastic and you shouldn't need to sharpen it during a single trip.

You should be careful if you don't have a lot of money to spend. They're relatively new and there's at least one youtube review video showing the tip breaking (not impossible on perfectly great knives.) Just do some extra homework, I'm not saying they're definitely bad.

The big issue with batonning is most knives are not made for it. They may be capable of it for a time but the more you baton with a knife the more you weaken it which means it will eventually break. A few knives are actually made for batonning ( Buck's "Camp Compadre Froe" being one of them ) and will hold up a lot better than most other knives.
It is much better to, if you can, use a hatchet or axe. Antique axes/hatchets are amazing if you can find them and usually made much better than their modern counterparts. If you do buy one today just make sure the head is an Appleseed grind as it will make your cutting easier and last longer.

Condor is fine. Their QC isn't perfect but they're also low price.
Primitive bush is a different steel as well (stainless.) It has a double edge near the tip. Out of the three, I would say it's also the best for chopping at things. The sheath is a little unusual as well.
I have even less to say about the other two knives. As you said, they're better suited to smaller cutting tasks. I'd pick the bushlore if I had to pick one, but don't have a great reason beyond liking that blade shape more.

Bought two condors recently, bushlore and stratos. Haven't had much time to beat on them yet, but so far I'm happy with them. Came decently sharp, stropped up nice enough to shave some hair, edge seems fine after whacking some dead wood with them. They feel solid and came with some decent leather sheaths. Probably not the prettiest knives out of the box, but it helps that I'm a big fan of plain and functional stuff. If you do get one, be prepared to put a little love and care into it (not that you shouldn't do that for any tool) the wood scales on mine felt bone dry out of the box. As far as inexpensive knives go, I'd say it's a decent purchase.
Can't say shit about their axes though, reviews on them look fairly mixed, and at the price ranges I saw, I'd probably just go for a husqvarna or something instead.
Thinking of buying a Schrade Frontier as a beginner's bushcraft knife. Is about the same price as a Morakniv but is full tang and comes with a ferro rod. I'm not sure if I should get the small blade @ 3.48 inch ( 8.84 cm ) or the large blade @ 4.37 inch ( 11.10 cm ); not that one is that much bigger than the other. Pic related, the small one. gor a survival knife, the AFSK isn't a bad knife per se. Its pretty soft steel though, so you'll need to resharpen it often. This is so that the blade will rather bend than crack. If i'm writing weird it's because I'm drunk.

You can baton but try not to split something over half the length of the blade, section the piece of wood instead of splitting it in half right away, don't put lateral force on the blade, don't pound on the handle, don't try to go through knots, use wooden wedges when possible and to get a blade out it it sticks

How does Schrade manage to create such well made knives for so little price? Not trying to shill , but I see knives like the SCHF45 going for not even $50 with 10 inches of 1095 which is a good steel, full tang, solid sheath, decent fit & finish and the heat treat looks pretty good too from the review videos I've watched. Is there some kind of catch?

Steel isn't that expensive, you pay for name, QC, and warranty with the expensive brands. Raw material is cheap so not like it costs significantly more to make a 6" blade over a 3" blade.

Plus Schrade is China made, right? They are big factories that make lots of product for different brands. When they can keep pushing out product all day, manufacturing costs go down versus a smaller company making 100 knives a day.
It isn't always a bad thing, but QC isn't always there so you may get a shitty knife once out of every 1000 made.

I'm pretty sure they're made in China or Taiwan. Current Schrade is different from old Schrade. They were bought up by the same company that makes Smith & Wesson knives a few years back and are manufactured in Asia.

If you want more toughness then you sacrifice stain resistance and move to tool/HSS steels

I'm new to knives, like as new as anyone can be. As of now I've got a Mora Classic 1 just for screwing around, and I ordered a Benchmade 530 for carry. What would you all recommend for hunting and just for dinking around. I've been thinking about getting and older Schrade old timer for just whittling and such. Can anyone recommend a hunting knife and maybe speak to the quality of Old Timers?

I had an old timer for years. It was pretty old and was made with some pretty hard steel but tended to start to rust if I didn't keep it oiled but it held a blade and was great for light work. The only bad thing was when I tried to pry on something with it and broke the tip off one of the blades. But I didn't mind because it made a nice screwdriver lol. Used it for several more years after that.

Possible with wet sandpaper, maybe start with 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 then finish with a compound or two to get it to mirror polished. Would take a long time, days to get done though.

Anyone used once like these before? Need to do a lot of unboxing in my job, so mostly stab and then slice, and with my old knife I almost slipped into the blade more than once when I was trying to stab through something more sturdy.
The hole for the index finger should prevent that but I am not too sure if you don't pay for it with the grip being insanely uncomfortable.

You really want one of those for cutting open boxes? Why not just do a regular utility knife? Much lower chance of fucking up whatever is in the box.
I own two of pic related. I keep one in my pocket while working, and the second in my backpack in case I lose or break the one in my pocket. My main one has gone through so much abuse over the past couple years, it's barely even yellow anymore.
If you really want to do a folder, I think you should just grab something with a comfy grip instead of that gimmick finger hole. Shorter blade may be better too so you don't slice anything up too bad where you shouldn't be cutting. Only other concer in that cardboard and tape will make a regular knife dull pretty damn fast, so you better be able to sharpen and clean the thing real quick on the job. With the utility knives, you can just flip the blade around and eventually change it with the extra blades in the handle. But sometimes I use my little CRKT to cut boxes and tape and the adhesive from the tape sticks to the blade and makes it cut like shit in no time.

Hard backed, preferably attached to a wooden block or something heavy. As for the material, whatever works the best. I don't plan on using compound but having options would be nice, and how much it changes the grind doesn't really matter to me.
Welp I'm excited, finally got my new knife after a few weeks of waiting.

Unless you are planning to use it for straight razors, you probably won't gain much benefit from a leather strop without compound as the natural silicates in leather are finer than the finest commonly available compounds and are not likely to have much of an effect on edges at typical knife grits.

Whenever I get a knife, I like to remove the factory edge immediately before anyone sees it, then sharpen it on 100000000000000000069 grit until the edges reflect the envy of all who witness the amazing sharpness. I store them in vacuum to make sure no atoms come in contact with the edge. Others who do not do this are beneath me. :^)

I wish Opinel's website ( their website has better prices than Amazon, etc. ) had more things in stock. Every time I go the things I want always seem to be out. From what I understand New-Schrade isn't terrible for the price but it could be a lot better. Their lower-priced knives ( can't remember the model but I know it comes with a fire-steel ) are supposedly on par with Mora in terms of a "value crown" but have the advantage of being full-tang.
My first knife was an Old-Schrade Old Timer so I have a soft spot for the name.

You should know ( if don't already ) that the name is almost all that is left of the company. As I understand it, Schrade was disbanded, but the name was revived by Taylor Brands who moved the manufacturing to China. The quality of the products is supposed to be okay for the price but I honestly think an Opinel ( the brand >>745229 accidentally told me to buy ) would do much better than a Schrade. Opinels make up some of the best /out/ folding knives and arguably some of the best /out/ folding saws and given their low prices you really can't go wrong even if you feel your item is a dud because the product will look good enough to hang on your wall ( especially if you customized it with a logo and/or slogan ) or can be refunded/returned.

The difference is a very legit question here, especially since they even use the same exact pictures (look at it, everything is pixel-perfect identical) and the specifications are perfectly alike too.
I have no personal experience with Schrade, just hearsay, so don't take my opinion too harshly. I was very much put off by the name of the knife and the design, but hey, that's pretty much just taste.
I'd personally go with the SCHF36 simply because of the finger choil, but they all look decent enough, especially for that price.
What are you going to use it for, specifically? I find it a bother to carry around a fixed blade when I'm not doing anything that requires a larger blade. In the end it really just comes down to preference, steel is steel.

Now to answer your question; all I'm planning on doing now is practicing some bushcraft, camping and survival skills ( skills I've not used since I was a boy 15 years ago ) I'm thinking I'll either go with Morakniv or CRKT ( MAYBE I'd go with SOG; anybody know how their backpacks are? ) with my next purchases. Specific tasks I want to learn involve chopping/processing/sawing wood, constructing temporary shelters, building fires ( using fire-steels and fire-lenses ) and caring for tools. I know CRKT is supposed to make amazing tools for the prices they ask and they seem to do a much better job manufacturing in China than New-Schrade does but I will admit to wanting those three new Moraknivs I posted earlier.
So I happened to Stumble across Cold Steel's YouTube channel today and I have to say what I saw impressed me. I used to cringe at the thought of them but if vid related is real then I'll not only owe Cold Steel owners an apology but I might even buy one myself. Yeap same as anon above me, haven't used it but it's makeup puts it between 3V and Infi so it should be tough as all hell but it's carbon and Mo content mean it's edge holding should be closer to 3V - all in all looks like it should be an awesome steel, plus Lionsteel are pretty damn good in their QC and general heat treat approach, they manufacture knives for a few US companies also. I'd say pull the trigger, I doubt you'll regret it.

Im looking for a good folder and first i thought about a buck 110 but then i found this buck 547 which is basically superior to the buck 110 and it released in 2015 and has s30v steel.
I dont like the look and curve of this knife but the materials are good and it looks sturdy and its a buck.
Its supposed to be a skinning knife but i want to use it as an everyday knife.
