I see a lot of knife threads on here. But does /out/ really USE their knives while out or are we at the junction where knives sell as a piece of mind? I ask this genuinely and not as a mocking thing. I'd also like to see a few pics of your knives that you have taken and it's seen some shit with you.
>>
This really needs it's own thread? Really? The knife general just won't do huh?
Typical tripfag
>>
>>713138
The only /out/ knife I own is a Mora Bushcraft Black. I've been tempted many times to shell out for a Fallkniven or Esee, but have always prioritised clothing, shelter, and other bits of /out/ kit, or put the cash towards travels.

Having said that, I invested in the water stones recommended by uncle Ray and brought it to shaving sharp, and it's a real pleasure to use. So far everything I've used it for has been pretty much novelty stuff, just little day trips innawoods to practice basic skills, except the odd time I've needed a fucking sharp knife as a tool or in the kitchen.

But to answer your question - yes, it's been used, but not as much as it probably should have been. I'm looking forward to putting it through it's paces in Spring when I start getting /out/ a little more
>>
>>713140
They didn't answer my question. So I asked in a thread.

Not that often really. Even when I'm fishing I use a pair of nail clippers to trim line rather than a knife. This is my /out/ knife. It's an heirloom of sorts and I bring it camping so that I can make wood shavings and open packages and such.

No. I want to keep it as clean and pretty as possible to post in EDC threads.

Used A1.

It saved my ass once.

I was at a friends house and they had this bbq in the garden. It was at night and there was a storm going on. Showering rain and lighning everywhere.

They left all responsability of making dinner to me, and they wanted cooked fish. I never cooked fish before, or used a bbq. Of course I accepted the challenge gladly.

Soaking wet I tried to start a fire with a lighter and then some newspaper that got wet. I managed to light some embers but it started to shower

>oh fuck

I rushed to my A1 and grabbed some log. I chopped the pine log in half pretty quickly and threw it into the bbq (it was this furnace thing). I also pried some pine bark from the tree to throw into the fire.

In the end it all worked out and the fish was pretty nice. I was lucky I could do it more than mad at my friends for caring fuckall for me.

I also didnt get struck by lightning,

I have a small stainless-steel folding knife I've used for years for housework and outdoors. Pic related. Generally serves me well for what I need to do.

I bought a fixed blade Elk Ridge knife recently because I wanted something a little hardier. It's nice to have something a little heavier and broader but I haven't found a whole lot of use for it yet. Plus Australian knife laws are shit. I feel safer from the law just carrying around my little folder when I need it rather than a hunting knife.

Carefully touched and stropped by me.

Fags gonna fag if they want, but Chris Reeve's factory edges are actually great.

Those imperfections ont he shoulder of the edge are not so, it is coating that has worn out due to the stropping, not the grind on the knife, which is pretty good also.

>>
>>713286
Believe what? That Sebenzas are really expensive for what you get? They are. Doesn't mean they aren't good knives.

If you just want a neck knife, you can get one just as good for a lot less. At least with a Sebenza you're getting a unique design.
>>
I use my knives. I've owned a lot of knives, but only currently own very few, because I always sell anything I don't end up using.

I use my SAK Huntsman and Spirit X all the time. Those are my most actually used and abused knives.

I also have a Paramilitary 2 that doesn't see much actual cutting, but I carry it hiking because I have a small dog, and live in an area with wolves, bears, cougars, coyotes, and I know I'd rush in to defend my dog in a heartbeat, so I might as well have a good knife to help me out.

No pictures because I'm lazy and have nothing to prove to you because I don't give a shit.

I wouldn't knock you. The best knife I've ever owned was some no name knife I bought at an ace hardware for $7 back in 2006. I lost it after about a year but I loved that knife. Did everything I needed and more.

I carry my Leatherman Wave and a Leatherman C33x, to be honnest I don't use them that much, but it doesn't take much room and it can always be handy.
I mostly use them to eat.

I will never understand the use of a big non-folding knife but maybe my outdoors activies just doesn't match it. Though, I admit some of them looks pretty cool

I'm a /out/ rural dweller. I carry a custom damscus steel belt knife. I use it every day, several times a day.

Preparing food? That's my knife. Making kindling for my nightly fire in my woodstove? That's the knife I use. Trimming poly pipe in the garden, cutting blackberry vines growing over the driveway, cleaning under my fingernails.

I don't get non-knife people. When I lived in the city and when I work in the city, I have a small opnel pocket knife that gets nearly as much use in the city as my belt knife gets every day in the country.

Sounds like this knife. Some fat kid who used to buy weed from my friend and I left it in my dude's car. Dude never asked for it back, so I assumed it. I've had it for close to 10 years and for some reason it just always seems to be nearby when I need to pry or cut something.
>>
>>714035
Mine looked almost identical to that but had a blue handle. Nothing like going to a drug deal and leaving a weapon in the dealers car. That's funny.
>>
>>713140
Its a new tripfafg, their narcissism is cancerous and lowers board quality for everyone
>>
>>714103
Hey friend, what's going on.

>>714055
Just a cheap Frost knife. Kid was some fat neckbeard that definitely lurks here. Probably boards like /mlp/ if he is even still alive. Been quite a few years since we did any business.

I'm always a fan when people drop drugs in my car. One of my buddies was weighing some nugget out in my back seat in the dark and probably dropped like 5g worth of nugs I found the next day. In another car I was cleaning and under the back seat I found a few hydrocodones.

But yeah, that Frost knife is still goin strong as long as I tighten the little screw every once in awhile so the blade doesn't wobble.
>>
>>714103

Please I beg of you how can I create filters that ignore these tripfags.

The ones I try to set up dont seem to work.
>>
>>713138
Yes. I use my buck folder, kershaw chill and mora fairly regularly. The buck folder is what I typically have on day hikes because it's innocuous in it's leather sheath, very tough and very sharp. The kershaw is my EDC. The mora is my favourite backpacking knife, I have not found any need for something more heavily built and I appreciate how light and easy to sharpen it is in the field. All three get used for dressing out game and any number of other things.

I'm not much for knife collecting. Shiny knives be shiny, I've got the tools I require for now.

i have a leatherman surge and a esse 4

the surge I take and use everytime i go out (as an angler something to cut line and pliers are essential). If i lost this thing i would buy another without hesitation but i'm pretty careful to keep it secure, I've got a retractable lanyard i attach to it when I'm on the water with it

esse 4 I usually take with me but I rarely use. if im on the water i keep it in my dry bag because its not worth the hassle of keeping it on me. there have been times when i didnt have it and wish i did, and its nice to know if theres a job too big for the leatherman that i have a bigger knife for it. if i lost it i would probably opt for a cheaper thinner blade

God damn that GI tanto looks so good.
>>
>>718055
I think so. almost unbreakable (damn near bulletproof) and grippy as hell. plus if you have the tools and knowedge, you can make them custom and for cheap by buying the blank scales and drilling/sanding/shaping to fit any knife and hand. Those scales are my favorite thing about that knife. About make some custom scales for my GI Tanto

>>718132
Yes. That plastic thing is a Tek Lok. Costs about 12 bucks. For the GI Tanto I just removed the factory Belt loop and used the screws from the attachment to attach the Tek Lok. For the BK2, you have to drill out the belt loop attachment and attach the Tek Lok to those holes. I love them though. Moves pretty quickly from the shoulder strap of my pack to scout style on my belt when I am in camp.

I guess to answer your question yes. those sheaths work without the Tek Lok. But is a major improvement

>>718210
thanks. Ive done alot of work to it. Rounded out the tanto style edge. Grinded down the useless false edge. Cut off that top guard and cut in some grip. Those sheaths have a tendency to dull the blade, so I am making a kydex sheath for it this week then I am gonna put on some stainless steel hardware and some micarta scales.
>>

stop making me want that knife you bastard. i already have too many knives that i dont use regularly and im trying to consolidate. have a designated blade for each vehicle, pack and social situation isnt helping
>>
>>718188
the retention on my crkt first strike was/is shit. so stripped the handle, wrapped it in paracord for a lanyard and now i tuck tje end of the loop into plastic. Better but not great. the first strike is a LOT thicker so i think that was the real issue.

still considering having the whole think thinned out so i can actually use it like a knife instead of an anchor point

I use my EDC knives every day and keep them touched up sharp enough to push cut newsprint at 90 degrees across the grain.

I also occasionally mirror polish them for fun.

I'm of the school of "don't use a knife for that which there are other tools" and so a puukko with a blade 65mm to 95mm in length seems ideal. Does anyone have any experience with Tommi puukko? Are there any pitfalls with a smaller blade (50-65mm blade length) that I'm not considering?

People do other things than just hike. For what you are doing, a Swiss army knife (though I'd have one with a can opener) would be perfect.

For people people going places where they can actually process wood and have fires outside of designated camp areas/pits, a bigger, more durable knife would be better suited.

What sharpening equipment do you have available?

It's cool if you like collecting them, but just hard to trust advice from somebody who tests how good their knife is by cutting through printer paper. That doesn't quite equate to using it for the next 10 years innawoods.

You have to make a distinction between information that can be generalized from controlled testing vs that which cannot.

Controlled testing can tell you things about toughness, apex stability, wear resistance, and handle ergonomics in extended cutting that anecdotal evidence cannot.

It cannot tell you about the utility and practicality of different knife designs for /out/ specific uses, though, since that is inherently subjective and experience based.

>>
>>713179

there is no "objectively best" bush knife.

General consensus is something full tang, with a 4-5 inch blade, and a comfortable handle (that works in multiple hand positions).

Generally carbon steel, 1095 is a popular choice. Other good alloys are O1, A2, 3V. D2 works on smaller knives too. Super steels like s30v are sometimes used.
>>
>>713138
I don't carry a knife at all unless I'm hunting or fishing. They're just not useful for much.

>>
>>736692
But super steels like s30v or even just generally harder steels like D2 won't work with a zero ground scandi unless you use a secondary bevel.
>>
> or even just generally harder steels like D2

What.
>>
>>737711
Technically he's correct just his wording is a bit wrong, high carbide steels, especially high carbide steels with large carbides are hugely wear resistant but don't fare well with shallow angle edges, the carbides cause the edge to be more brittle and tend to break away giving you microchipping so zero grinds like the Scandi are better suited to low carbide tougher steels which won't chip as easily, it's easier to dress a rolled or slightly worn edge with a Scandi than a chipped one which requires a lot of steel removal.
>>
>>736693

I'll be the first to say it....

Clearly this faggot doesn't go /out/
>>
>>736779
>>737711
>>737718

Well, more precisely, high carbide steels are likely to be too brittle to be used in a Scandi grind for the kind of work you would typically use a Scandi grind for.

I would expect most high carbide steels to be fine at 10 degrees per side for EDC type use, though really only substantively better at cutting soft abrasive materials to low sharpness.
