Itemize a list, make an itinerary, look up local classes/course/seminars on subjects, practice them in the field.

Now in this one, its clear that the intention of the producers is have the women get carried and be as politically correct as fucking possible. Its just horrible.

Yeah it was pretty awesome actually. I think the best part about it is that they were honest about the guys pussying out. There didn't seem to be that 'behind the scenes' help that people are talking about in this thread, and the guys that stayed the longest actually seemed to have genuine skills. I liked how in the end the lesson learned was really that once you're set up with the basic necessities, survival is a matter of having mental fortitude and the right mindset, which really ties in with what a lot of the experts say like in Lofty Wiseman's book.

Why can't you combine both? Alone season 1 essentially provided free field testing for anyone wanting to long-term camp in the north west. Fire, fishing techniques, shelter, etc. Having watched people fail to survive helps immensely if you're going to try to succeed. Instead of making the mistakes yourself, just remember what the idiots on TV did and learn from it Obviously you still need your own mental fortitude, knowledge, and experience, but it can't hurt to see what works best and get some ideas before you go and do it yourself.

Tanning is a defense mechanism your body attempts to do so you don't get a full on sun burn. If you carefully control your exposure to sunlight, you can tan and effectively gain resistance to it, but if you aren't careful and just try to YOLO it, it will easily turn into a sunburn rather than a sun tang.
Here's a documentary of some dumb kid who successfully did an island survival adventure. Notice something? He went from white english kid to bronze skinned tan man in a manner of days. Since he was a young, outdoorsy kid to begin with his body was already situated to bring out the ideal amount of tanning. They've said they're following the same format in season two of Alone which includes dropping them on Vancouver Island again.
