The idea was to preheat the toaster on a fire, not to hold it over a fire with bread in it... That way you can control the heat better. Also, check it every now and again?

Would a carbonated toast make a good firestarter?

Gonna go and burn some toast and see how it takes a spark...

Tried it. It's pretty crap. Will take a spack but it is hard to get it to spread. Gonna stick with charcloth.
Pie irons are awesome.
Made little mini pizzas in mine

You think /ck/ would know anything about these?
The answer is, "practice". Do it at home until you get it right.

Why do you need a knife like that for car camping?

How could you possibly jump to the ridiculous conclusion that we were car camping?
Knife is my 10 year old son's, used for whittling and such.
Pizza was made from a "Lunchables" kit (3 pizzas - $1)
We backpacked about 2.5 miles across COE land to a secluded spot on the lake shore, built a campfire and used our pie irons to make pizzas and strawberry pies (crescent roll dough w/ jam filling) Found a short piece of 2X6 washed up on the beach to use as a prep table.
