Gonna spend my dividend on Trekking Poles, because that's the only piece of gear I don't have.

What am I looking for in a good pair of poles? I know I want cork handles, but other than that what makes a good trek pole? Anybody have a recommendation (has to be sold at REI)?
>>
you want flick locks or tent/z pole style. get all the attachments when you buy the poles. i quite like my black diamond carbon z's.
>>
get flick lock, twist lock is unreliable when it's wet (rain or snow). get snow baskets if you need them. aluminum poles are generally better if you're a heavier guy, i've heard reports of carbon ones breaking. i use carbon poles and have only broken one skiing, never while backpacking, but i'm not that heavy + ultralight.

Snapped my carbon fiber ones just crossing a creek on the Continental divide. Just bend them the right way and pop

What is the advantage of these over a stick? I see.middle aged people walking around on metalled tracks with two of them like they're skiing

Stick is heavy and unreliable

- stability with heavy pack on terrain (esp. downhill)
- transfer uphill climb energy to upper body (stick may work for this as well)
- compact/packable
- tungsten tips don't skip on surfaces that easy.
- light
- durable
- though not as good can double as ice axe (works well with glissade)

That said, I go on some climbs or hike where I never take them off the pack. But I've also bonked on a couple of strenuous day climbs and they saved my ass by helping me back to the trailhead (use BD Alpine Carbon Cork).

I thought these poles were just a meme that the elderly used for when they were trecking.

Just get fit or use a stick bro.
The stick in pic related got me through 10 days of serious mud and sand trekking on Stewart Island.

yep, they are.. OP is going to spend his whole 'dividend' on them. 'Must be from REI'
Good for a laugh. Only pure pussies and very elderly use these. And trust fund douchebags... which falls under pussies

All gear that people with jobs buy is a meme.

Cork, flip lock, carbon fiber, camera mount, light weight - in that order.

Camera mounts can also be used as hammock spreaders, notably on the ridge runner.

Aren't these kinda gay?

If you have flat feet and fucked up knees like me, its a must.

You obviously have never spent that much time in the mountains
>>
>>719982
you obviously have some kind of inner ear defect that affects your balance

+1 pretty much everyone in the mountains uses them, so stay cool flatlanders.
