Safety gear? Coolest line cutter I've bought in a while; straps neatly to my PFD and has a Titanium coated edge so hopefully even the sea won't fuck it up for a while.

Where'd you mount your transducer? I'm ordering a fishfinder this week
>>
>>717208

I've got it shooting through the hull; made a little well out of polystyrene foam, filled it with Marine Goop (careful if you do this to make sure there are no bubbles) and pressed the transducer down hard with a weight plate until it sets. Gives a nice, clear image.

water temp in Northeast US was about 45F, no bites but I saw a few fish cruising at about 10-15ft down. Still learning where the fishfinder image is in relation to the yak.
>>

Cast a big lure out front, have a dayglo bead on the line so you can see where it hits the water, slow retrieve and watch your finder until you see the lure appear.

For anyone who runs go pros/cameras, tablets and cellphones on the boat I have a good tip.

These are battery packs with two USB inputs, 1.0a and 2.0 outs. The solar pack holds 48000mah and the silver one 20000mah. The Samsung s7 has a 3000mah battery at full charge lol. These two packs will charge any USB chargeable devices for multiple trips.

I use a "deeper fishfinder" which if you guys haven't looked at is an awesome tool. It's a Bluetooth connected, cashable bobber style fishfinder. Has a bunch of useful features, and I don't have to drill any holes in my yak, or carry a heavy battery. I use a tablet to read it off of, and my cellphone to run navionics. GPS and fishfinder covered.

I also use my phone as a camera, and I'm running the go pro overhead. Having the two batteries is super helpful and the best part, they were each only 20 bucks.
>>
>>718279

I have no pics of it, but it's a 12v golf cart battery in a foam-lined, water-proof hard case; I drilled it to pass a vent tube and cable through, then sealed the drill points with Marine Goop. Bought waterproof cable connections on ebay; one end comes through the hull into the rear tank well just behind my seat. It a simple matter of slotting the case into the tank well, plugging in the cable, and I'm good to go.

Nice setup but it doesn't look all that secure, you're going to get a lot of false readings if the transducer moves around a lot.
>>
>>720202
I spent like 3 hours out today. Was awesome. 2 perch, lost a beauty trout right before landing it.
>>
>>720358
It's been pretty solid. Definitely can set it better but used it again today with no issues. I haven't seen anything I'd consider a false reading. I think I'm gonna run a bungee cord down through the scup holes so it's a little tighter.

Ocean reliable?
>>
>>720562
pic too small to see what it is.
I have 13.5 FeelFree lure for ocean. Also camoflague is cool but orange/yellow is way safer for ocean.

Ocean can mean a lot of things. Where and what type of conditions?

Pompano 120 Sit-On-Top Angler Kayak (image search)
Would work. Good price, less than 1/2 what I paid for mine.
If you are going into rough water I'd recommend practicing launches and dumps without equipment until you're comfortable.

Mostly this

It's not ment for the ocean but with experience you could get by.
>>
>>720562

You don't want less than 12 feet along the keel for ocean kayaking.
>>
>>720471

Why not just shoot through the hull? It's incredibly easy, you don't need a special transducer or anything.

Peddle kayaks... I don't know why, but I just don't like them. I'm told by folks I trust that Hobbie make the only one that's any good (MirageDrive), but I just can't see it giving you the same control as a paddle does. Plus it's totally in the way at launch and retrieve; my rudder at least retracts in shallow water.
>>
>>721220
Well the propeller goes forwards and backwards so it already seems better than miragedrive, also the prop is retractable. The only thing thats stoppinbg me from getting one is their insane price, that fishing model is over 2K.

The mirage drive lays flat against the bottom of the kayak when you push one pedal all the way forward. You steer with a rudder by hand, gives you the ability to control the kayak while you fish and stuff. Pretty cool shit. Expensive though.

This is my rig, trying to figure out a milk crate situation for the back. Doesn't fit into the rear well. Gonna take some modding lol.

>>
Do your boats tip around when you fish?
>>
>>720562
I saw a man in Hawaii standing on something no bigger than a skateboard reeling in Ahi.
>>
>>721542

Eagle talon 12. Got it for 450 bucks from dicks. No complaints except the back well is too small for a crate lol.

I take it in light ocean and it handles it absolutely fine. I wouldn't push it in 15+MPH winds or particularly high swells, but on calmer days it's awesome.
>>
>>721549

No, not that I've noticed.
>>
>>721542
I'd concur on the feelfree lure. The orange lure posted earlier is mine and this looks almost identical, maybe shorter though. 11.5?

Is feelfree lure the official yak of /out/

it did seem like the best I could find. I like the handles for easy tie down in the truck bed and it seems to have a lot of room for gear.

I'll likely be ordering one this summer for wyoming lake fishing.

Now let's say I want to paddle down a longer resevoir type body of water and do some camping/fishing.... somewhere like flaming gorge UT....

Will the lure fit a 70L pack along with minimal fishing supplies? It seems like the most likely candidate to hold a big pack.

Any info would be cool
>>
>>721871
>feelfree lure the official yak?
I wouldn't say that. I love mine but I'll warn you it is a heavy bastard. That's not an issue to me but you're probably not going to want to toss a 13.5 on a roofrack of a subcompact.
>70L pack
rear deck has plenty of room for cooler/milkcrate/etc
1 hatchand I don't think you'd get a 70L pack in it. Certainly enough room for some decent dry bags. I could load a week's worth between the deck and the hatch.
>>
>>721871
The wheel in the keel thing is pretty cool and the 13.5 has a cutting board/bait/fish/whatever compartment under the board.
The seat is comfy as all hell too and it raises up, see gravity seat.
>>
This summer I'm headed back to South Florida from school. I have a lot of fishing gear and few kayaks, but i've never taken them out on the ocean (only lake).
I'm not the best at fishing, but I really enjoy it and like the idea of kayak fishing.

What is included in a good setup, and what are the best poles/ bait to use for palm beach/ SoFlo fishing?

>>
>>723465

How's this for a dumass piece of Britbong law: I can have my flare launcher "penjector", into which I can load rounds and fire them. But I can't have a flare gun, which essentially works exactly the same way, because it's gun shaped. For that, I need a gun licence. How ridiculous is that?
>>
I always see people mention that you'll get wet on a sit on top kayak. When it comes to fishing early spring and late fall is it necessary to wear water proof gear to not freeze your dick off?
>>
>>727147

I've never felt that the sit in kayaks I've used prevented me from getting wet.

I have an ascend fs12. I haven't really gotten into kayak fishing other than bringing a small rod when I go out. I personally like the sit in but plan on getting a sit on top eventually. Does anyone else like sit in vs on top? And are on tops less maneuverable? Bc I do a lot of recreational kayaking with friends with smaller 10 footers and wouldn't want to be left in the dust or stuck in some places
>>
Thinking about buying a 2016 Ascend FS12T because it seems like a good deal for a first water vessel. Anyone have any thoughts?
>>
>>727883
I love my fs12. I'm a bigger guy 6'5 280. And it fits me perfectly fine. So anyone smaller should have no problem with stability or tracking with their product. Everyone I've heard talk about their fs12t speak very highly of it. Of course you should still try to test one if possible to see how you like it.
>>
>>728085
That happens to be the one issue I'm having. I live 2.5 hours away (give or take) from the closest Bass Pro store, which I'm not sure it has a pond to test it and the Ascend kayaks are only sold at that ONE Bass Pro in the entire damn state. I think I'm just going to buy one and hope for the best.
>>
>>728207
Yea that is a problem. I guess worst case scenario is that you don't like it and you return it. The plus side is they are fairly cheap. 500-600 dollars for the fs12t whereas other angler kayaks are going for upwards of 800-1000+. I would recommend it especially if it's your first. It's a decent yak for a decent price.
>>
>>727883

The tankwell is way, way too small. You need to think about your crate - It'll be a good sized plastic one in which you'll mount vertical tubes to store rods and nets, and also contain all your gear - Lures, bait, food, water, spare kit, an anchor (you DO NOT want to fish tidal waters without an anchor). It also has no centre pod; they're not essential, but the first time you see a yak which has one, you'll realize what you're missing.
>>
>>727846

I love my sit-on. It's thirteen feet and rudder equipped; nobody in a little ten footer can keep up if I've got the hammer down - Long yaks track better and sit-ons allow for more stable posture. I do own an 8 footer, but it's not been wet in years.
>>
>>728521
I don't really have too much fishing gear anymore. I've minimized what I use in recent years. 3 or 4 spinning rods and 4 fly rods is what I'm down to. I have about 50 dry flies and 10 nymphs in rotation until I lose or destroy them, then I'll tie more with varying degrees of pattern/color. Spinning gear is all mostly UL or M because its more challenging and makes for easier pack and transport. I'm used to shore fishing and wet wading and pretty sick of shore fishing. I figure a decent kayak will get me up or down a river to the next campsite or around a lake from a base camp. I also want a bit of exercise - even though originally I was going to buy a 14' Jon boat/SS canoe and use a motor. Boy did I get off topic. What the heck is a tankwell and why is it important to me?
>>
>>716876
Slightly off topic I'm trying to get into kyaking but have never done it and I'm terrified of fish. Is there fun things to do besides fishing while kyaking? Is there a cheap way to get into this stuff?
>>
>>731016
>find a place that rents kayaks for the day
>go kayaking for a day

As cheap as it gets. No fishing required.
