It was stuck in the propeller and shroud of a tug boat that ran it over the previous night. I was expecting a rope, which is what normally happens.

There should be an underwater scuba resort. There's Seaventures, an offshore oil rig converted into a scuba diving platform complete with furnished lodgings, dining room, etc. (pic related)

There's also one true fully underwater hotel that I know of, and one underwater lab still operating off the coast of Florida.

Yet there's no underwater scuba resort where scuba fanatics, who drop $$$ on their hobby anyway, could go and live underwater to do saturation diving for a week or two at a time.

What a shame, I hope that changes.
>>
>>724212
Neat idea. However the whole saturation diving thing would be an utter cluster fuck of liability. Divers are often idiots and will bolt to the surface instinctively, even experienced divers do it.
Theres a reason conventional saturation diving is done via surface supplied breathing apparatus.

There's space tourism. Rich motherfuckers pay $$$ to visit the ISS. I don't see why Aquarius Reef Base couldn't help fund its continued operations in the same manner. Jules is a start but it's in a cloistered inland lagoon with terrible vis, and just ~30 feet deep.
>>
>>724217
I understand and agree with your points. However, the space tourists didn't get to go on EVA's.
>>
>>724218

That's also true. I dunno mang, diving nuts drop hundreds on stuff like full face masks or color lcd dive computers, and thousands or tens of thousands on rebreathers. I feel like an open ocean undersea scuba resort is financially viable, someone with the capital needs to make it a reality asap

Absolutely horrible time to become a commercial diver.
The industry is doing horribly. The rock bottom price of oil is driving down demand for offshore projects and even basic maintenance.
>>
Nope, but I do regular scuba diving.
>>
>>726613
>>727177
I hate this resonse. If you want to focus on welding theres tons of stuff out there. The industry in the gulf is up and down, Oils low right now. The good thing is that pushes out the old salty dickheads like the guy who replied.
>>
>>726613
The gulf side is just one aspect of diving and they dont do a lot of welding. Theres shipyard and inland, Ddams and bridges.
The dude who said the industry sucks is most likely a guy who got out of school and couldnt make it in the gulf or someone who knows nothing but what they read on a reddit thread before they pussied out of wanting to be a diver.
>>
Anybody had any experience with teaching tech? I much prefer to teach higher level or leadership level courses, but a lot of tech divers seem to think that they know everything better than I do, especially as I'm pretty young, so I've been hesitant to pick up tech classes to teach.

Pretty much.
You need more air the deeper you go.
Also, they often use gas mixtures, depending on the dive plan.
For instance, a dive below 50 meters will likely have a reduced Oxygen fraction, and a reduced nitrogen fraction by adding helium, it's called trimix.
Other bottles may have increased Oxygen percentages, to accelerate decompression.

Guess that's why it's called technical diving.

>500m dive
>50 hours Deco.
500m dives havnt been done since the 80s, and they were just world record masturbatory non routine stuff. Also, I have a hunch that Deco would take a bit longer than 50 hours at that depth. Might be worth doing some light research into some saturation sive tables.

I made a poor drunken purchase. I bought a Squeeze Lock Titanium Knife, Tanto Tip.

I don't dive. I paid WAY too much, like, $120 Canadian. How fucking stupid am I? What the hell should I do with this thing? I have never felt so bad about buying something I don't need.
>>
>>738611
There's an entire industry living off of chumps like you. At least you realized what happened. And it only cost you a day's wages, give or take.

But try questioning titanium blades in a knoife thread. People will yell at anybody NOT doing what you did as utter fools.
>>
>>738654
is the knife any good? To be honest, it feels like shit for something so expensive. Thing maybe cost $10 to make. Maybe. The clip is nice, but the edge came soft as butter, and I have not ever sharpened titanium
>>
>>738673
Titanium doesn't keep an edge very well, and it doesn't sharpen particularly well either. It's only two knife applications are EOD and Diving. EOD because it's non-magnetic, and diving because it's more or less corrosion proof.

They make alternatives for both that are cheaper and usually better. Aluminum Bronze or ceramics for the former, Stainless Steel for the latter.

You got suckered into a bad purchase, and now you've learned your lesson.
>>
>>738701
well, shit. I feel so fucking stupid.

I get the feeling this won't be my last drunken purchase though, which is scary.

I did not learn my lesson.

Yes, 1.2 days lost over a shitty knife I will never use. I feel like selling it to someone else for a high price would mean bad karma.
>>
>>738673
>Squeeze Lock Titanium Knife
I wouldn't know. What did you get? Aqualung?

Throw it on ebay for $80. People are dumb enough, it might go up to $200 if you get a snazzy pic.

Super light (saves 1/2 sip of water!)
Absolutely corrosion proof (it could be made into a turbine blade!)
Nonmagnetic (like any stick)
Possible postapoc currency (uhu!)
Waterproof to infinity meters (3 x infinite feet!)
Designed by professionals (con men) for professionals (deep sea astronaut hunters)
>>
>>738712
I like your thinking. But I feel like I would be cheating someone as bad as I was cheated.....I am to honest to scam.

Great post though. Whats your knife of choice?
>>
>>738708
Put it up on eBay or something, recoup some of your loss. Live and learn, now you know better.
>>
>>738720
You weren't cheated. You were made to believe that titanium is a good knife material. It is a valid opinion, albeit only sensible in some very limited cases.

You should have no qualms about selling it. It has a market value, and even if that value is arbitrary (most are) you are not deceiving anyone. You are just not advertising your opinion about the sensibility. Guess what the guy at the market checkout does. Do you believe diamonds are worth money? Do you believe Nikes are good shoes? Do you think Office 2016 is better than Office 2010? That one detergent washes whiter?

I hope I'm not pulling too many threads here. Sell your buyer's remorse. You're not cheating anybody. In fact you might save the next guy $10, but that's up to him.
