#16- "$18 Memecaster" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>712740

Good to see sumn dem people up north are starting to get those early spring bass. At the same time, the summer humidity and heat is kickin in down here. Finally got a day yesterday without crazy strong wind and was getting eaten alive by bugs at dusk because of this humidity.

Can't complain about the end of Daylight Savings though, I actually have a couple hours after work to get to the lake before it is dark.

Let's talk about fishin'

Westcoast anon her. Caught another big brown today on a worm and bobber. Bought some new lures in town, then went to the local pond and caught 4 little smallmouths for kicks. Pic related, anyone have success stories with those Rebel Crawdads? I'm looking to pick up a few for laketrout if they work.
>>
>>714562
Are those the really small ones? I have a couple of those ~1.5" deep diving Rebel crawdads and I haven't really used them a ton but the few times I did, they were definitely drawing little nibbles and bites from all sorts of stuff.

>>714553
What is that?

Livetarget blueback herring. derr herring not shad
>>
>>714571
I was thinking the normal sized ones, but hell I'll get the small ones if they produce
>>
>>714580
Cool. Have you had good luck with it?

I have a LiveTarget Frog, but I've never really had good luck with frogs. A month or so ago Dick's had BOGO on some of the LiveTargets and I grabbed 2 of the rattler type gold shads in different sizes. Need to use em a little more, they look promising.

I still want to try those BaitBalls but refuse to pay close to $20 each for something I have heard mixed reviews on.
>>
>>714584
The hooks on the small ones are pretty damn small though. If you want to get bluegill or crappie, go for it. But get a bigger one for bass if that's what you're targeting.
>>
>>714587
Haven't found the time yet but the waters still so cold all I've been catching is pickrel. Yeah I looked up the lure online and it's 20 something but I know I didn't pay that. I got it at Dicks for like 13.

>>714870
Dude. No.

If the water isn't 50+f there won't be striper in it.

They migrate based on water temperature. The won't be north just yet, give it a few weeks. Besides, the schoolies move into the northern tribs first, you want to be patient and wait a few days after the first signs of migration to catch the hogs.

Big fish are more calculating, and smart. They aren't as aggressive as younger fish, they hang behind the schools only eating if it's easy pickings. Just be patient, fish will be up north here soon.

Need help w my hula popper.

It's an old one, and has been left in my tackle box inside my truck cabin last summer, and some of the rubber pieces on the tail melted a bit. Would it still be effective?

>poorfag here

>>
>>714963
As long as you can still get a goos lil chug out of it, you will be fine.
>>
>>714965
What's that mean in English?
>>
>>714968
Good chug'

With poppers, when you can get them to make that little gulp sound, that is supposed to be the key to getting attention. You should still be able to walk the dog and all that good stuff even with a messed up skirt. I don't think the fish will care so much about that. I have an old Hula Popper with a beat up skirt too. I never really use it though.
>>
>>714962
Go catch the start of the Bait run. Fill your bag limit (for me its mackerel), freeze it, label it. Now you have bait for the start of the season. I'm itching too, but it will be an early season!
>>
I went by a local pawn shop today just to see what they had in the way of fishing reels. I've been looking for an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500 c3 or c4 baitcaster but didn't find any there. They had like 4 Ambassadeur 5500 reels there for $30-$40, some reels came with a rod. I already have 2 5000 series Ambassadeur reels or I would've grabbed one of those. I want a 6500 series reel because it comes with a bait clicker whereas the 5000/5500 series doesn't.
>>
>>715025
Lots of pawn shops will advertise their inventory on Craigslist so might be worth keeping an eye on that.
>>
>>715094
Yeah, I'm not in a huge hurry to buy one, people just don't use many bigger baitcasters in this area, I'm just too far from the ocean. I might try to pick one up on ebay next fall/winter once fishing season dies down.
>>
>>715098
Psh I could probably find a dozen of em on my CL. So many big saltwater reels. I should look for a mid range Penn spinning reel on there.
>>
>>715101
Yeah, the only fish people would use a large reel for around here would be blue/flathead catfish and alligator gar. 90% of the fishermen I see in this area are targeting largemouth bass with the other 10% targeting smaller channel catfish. People trying to catch large blue/flathead catfish in this area almost exclusively use trot, limb, or jug lines.
>>

>>
>>715108
Crappie are fun to catch. They will hit so many different lures. Small Rapalas and spinners all day. Mepps Agila 1 and you will be pulling em out like crazy. I think they like underwater structure a bit like fallen tree limbs. I always caught them in spots similar to largemouth.

>>715107
Noice. Those are fatties.
>>
>>715114
Is that a yo-zuri pins?
Those are killer lures.
>>
>>715111
That's awesome! Nice trips!

The fishing stuff is pretty cool too.

>>715115
That is a good deal on the Cardinal SX. The regular Cardinals can be found for $25-$30 but the SX is normally a bit more. You can always find steals on eBay if you look. I got my Revo SX for $115 and those are $160 everywhere.
>>
>>715111
>>715114
Where the hell did that lure kit come from? That's a nice lil setup for bass and crappie.
>>
>>715108

Crappie is my favorite to target catch and eat. They like to hang around structures in the water I use minnows for them most of the time but they'll take colorful crappie lures also. I take the boat out tie off to one of the trees (I have a few different crappie spots I hit) out in the water and and drop the line straight down into the water near the structure, no casting. You let the line run til it hits bottom and you reel it up a few turn. You slowly work your way up until you find what depth the crappie are hanging out at and then you fish at that depth.

For white bass I normally troll along the lake running 2-3 lines with basic silver lures or minnows hooked through the mouth so they look like they're swimming. You've got to wait til you know that they're running though (spawning) and you'll tear em up.
>>
>>715116
>>715126
Thanks for the tips, I'd like to get out and catch some crappie at some point, I'm starting to get a little burnt out on bass and catfish so it's time to mix it up a bit.

One more thing to add, pic related is GOAT for crappie. The smaller ones. I really like the white ones but it does't matter. Rig them with a jig head, beetle spin, Texas rig, small spinner bait, anything.
>>
So i have a spool full of 0.40mm mono, about 40lb test.
Its good mono and i dont want to scrap it.

I bought a spool worth of daiwa 8pe braid, and want to use it on the same reel.
The reel in question has a plastic backup spool and aluminium main spool, which is currently loaded with mono.
Can i successfully re-spool the backup spool directly off the main spool, so i free up my main aluminum spool?
lel.
>>
>>715164
Sure. Put the plastic spool on the reel and reel up the mono from the aluminum spool.
>>
>>715153
Yeah, I've heard that curly tail grubs are pretty good for crappie. I also know some people who swear by beetle spins for them. I have a pretty good assortment of smaller jigs, spinners, and blade lures that I think I'll try before I go buy anything else.
>>
So I'm a newfag looking to get into fly fishing. Anybody know a good budget setup.
>>
>>715166
Figured.
Will it matter how the two spools are turned relative to each other?
Like:

I like the beetle spins too. They will work well. I've been digging those jig heads with the blades attached to them latelt. Easier to deal with compared to the beetle spins.

But any small grubs or worms you have will work if you rig them up with a weight or jig head. Small spinners, spoons, and cranks as well. They eat anything a big bluegill or small bass will go for. And if you catch one crappie, there will probably be more right next to the first one.

I wouldn't worry about that. I have never had an issue. I would just put the empty spool on the reel and lay the full one on the floor.

New England fag here. It iced out around me last week, it's been warm for the last few weeks. I've been super pumped to get out on the water this weekend and I just found out its dropping to the 20's and we're getting 8" of snow instead. Fucking lame. Thanks for reading my blog.
>>
>>715175
Alright. Yeah I have a whole bunch of 1/8 and 1/16 oz jig heads and a few unopened bags of small plastic grubs and creatures that I need to use... I also have like 10 minnow-sized blade lures and 5 or 6 small rooster tail inline spinners.

Do I need a fishing license to fish from a saltwater pier in TX?

Couple of buds and I are going down to Corpus Christi tomorrow and were planning to do some pier fishing.

Hypothetically speaking, do they check if you have one?
>>
>>715289
>Do I need a fishing license to fish from a saltwater pier in TX?
Yes

>Hypothetically speaking, do they check if you have one?
Cops? Probably not. A game warden most likely would.
>>
>>715301
Thanks,
I cant imagine there are too many wardens around the pier, are they?
>>
>>715304
Around here the cops are in charge of that.
Early in the year they won't ask you about it. Later on they might. (Makes sense as your permit lasts til 31.12 of the year, and you have to get a new one after 1.1)

Way i see it, its easier to pay 60 bucks for a permit, than to get caught without one and pay easily double that.
>>
>>715304
You would be surprised. Just get your license it's cheaper than a fine.
>>
>>715310
Last question,
Would a driver's license be a suitable requirement for a fishing license
>>
>>715314
Im sorry what?
Not sure what you mean
>>
>>715289
Does your state sell one-day fishing passes?
>>
>>715315
Sorry, I wasn't clear.
In order to get a fishing license, I need a proof of residency.
Would a driver's license be a good proof of residency?
>>
>>715317
Yes, they are $11 dollars
>>
>>715319
It might. Best ask that question at the place where you get the permit.

In Croatia, all we do is call the dude up, give him our names, ID card number, and pay up. And he then gives you a number and code to your permit.
>>
>>715319
Yeah I've always used my drivers license.
>>
>>715289

Best to just pick up an $11 day pass, was a $140 ticket back in '95 for fishing without a permit in freshwater reckon it's only gone up since then.
>>
>>715332
I think it's at $250-300 now
>>
>>715333

>>
>>715289
If you are only going to be fishing from a pier where you have to pay, you may not need that license. If there is a website for the pier, it will probably be in the FAQ.

I believe the pier by my house is like that. It costs a couple $$ to go fishing on it, but that covers any fishing licrnse fees for the state. Private stocked lakes and shit can be like that too.
>>
>>715186
That sounds perfect. Sounds just like what I would use for crappie as far as lures go.

Is that just in cold water or something? I always get a decent little fight from largemouth. If they are small (<2lb) I will normally just reel them in because they aren't really strong enough to run with the drag. But whenever I get one over 3lb, it will run around a bit and when I get it close to shore, they normally see me and will jump and go on another run.

I really want to get some peacocks because they are supposed to fight harder than largemouths. But the Mayan chichlids are definitely the hardes fighting fish for their size that I have ever caught.

It really depends around here.. sometimes LMB will put up a hell of a fight and other times they all just seem to roll over and let me reel them in without any struggle at all. I've pulled in entire stringer-fulls that just rolled over on their side and skidded along the surface of the water while I cranked them in and other days I've had several fish break my 8lb test line trying to pull them in.
>>
>>715479

You can't expect 2 pound fish to fight very well unless you're using ultra light gear.

Ugh, it's gonna be hard to get much fishing done these next few weeks since my mom had that hip replacement. She's still in the hospital so I don't have to take care of her, but I gotta wake up super early and take care of her dogs. Then go to work all day. Then get off work and let the doges out. Then go visit her at the hospital. Then go feed the dogs and let them out again. Then go to sleep.

And it will probably be even worse when she gets out of the hospital. I will probably be limited to the couple lakes within a 10min drive just in case I gotta run back over there.

Even with UL gear they're nothing special fight-wise.
I caught my personal best 5-1/2lb bass on 4lb test one summer on a golf course water hazard. I was REALLY concerned the line would break when landing it because I didn't have a net, but even then the fight wasn't that memorable.

Checked.

And that's strange. You guys have some lazy bass. People specifically target bass because they are aggressive and put up a fight.

That being said, lots of panfish fight hard for their size. But a 4lb bass is much more fun to catch than a 4lb catfish or carp. At least the largemouth I catch.

>>
>>716134
It's a combination of waking up at 4am, having a shitty diet, and then I do physical labor all day getting sweaty in the heat and then going into a 35F cooler for half an hour.

I almost always have a mild cold. I have had some sinus infection for the past two months. It was really bad for a week, and then got a little better but hasn't totally gone away. I'm still having sinus pressure and blowing nasty shit out of my nose.

The sleep is definitely one of the biggest things. A few years ago when I was working at this restaurant, I never had to start before 9:30am so it was really easy to get 8hrs of sleep every night. I didn't have so much as a cold for 2 or 3 years.
>>
>>716141
Kinda sounds like me. The latest I sleep is 6 am but usually I'm up between 4 or 5 am then I spend every minute I'm at work sweating, have a horrible diet, and spend a lot of time in close proximity to other people. This is the sickest I've been in about 2 years, not counting a broken wrist, flipping a car at 90mph and being committed to a nut house for about a week.

I've been up even earlier the past couple days because of my mom being in the hospital. I gotta be moving by 3:30a or 4:00a and let her dogs out, feed them this crazy diet she has going, play with them for a minute, let them do their thing so they don't shit all over by the end of the day, then shower and be at work by 5:30a or 6:00a.

I need to find somebody to buy that W&M baitcaster. Where is Mainebub? He doesn't own a baitcaster yet. Maybe we can get him on a discount memecaster. Or get you on a low-profile since you have all spinning reels besides the Ambassadeur, right?

Plus these doges always want their little bones. Bout to get them some now. Only an old woman could spoil the shit out of animals so bad. I know that refridgerated food isn't cheap either. I haven't even spooled it up yet. I already have 2 baitcasters and I use spinning reels more. I bought it because those reels retailed for $80-$100 and it was some old model for $18.

That Sabalos is a decent reel too. Just not sure what to do with it. If I'm using a memecaster, I will use that Revo. And then I have the Silver Max on the Ugly Stik. I guess I could use the W&M instead of the Silver Max if I needed a backup baitcaster. But I would rather buy a cheap rod from BPS and set up a third casting combo. I just don't think I will ever use it.
>>
>>716167
yeah. i think im actually going to put it on something closer to 8 foot

what is a good 50 dollars or less lo-pro memecaster? abu black max?
>>
>>716175
The options are kinda limited if you don't go like $75-$100 at least. I haven't had any problems with my Silver Max, but I know there is somebody here who had one and didn't like it. Tons of people use those Black Max and Silver Max reels and never really have an issue with them. You just can't expect it to run like a $300 reel when you pay $50 for it.

Besides that, I would keep an eye on the store brand reels. Bass Pro baitcasters are supposed to be pretty nice and their store brand stuff goes on sale quite a bit so maybe you can get a deal if you wait. What does the BPS Tourney Special baitcaster run?

http://m.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Extreme-LowProfile-Baitcast-Reel/product/1406210641352/

This would be nice, especially if you can catch it on sale for $20 less or something. Otherwise the Tourney Special is $50. Might be able to get a BPS Pro Qualifier for a decent price too if you keep an eye out. Dude at Bass Pro told me Abu (Pure Fishing) makes their baitcasters anyway.

Otherwise there is a Quantum KVD baitcaster that goes for $80, might be able to find it cheaper online.

Oh, and I almost forgot. That white Okuma I have, the Stratus V, Dick's still has the Stratus V baitcasters for cheap as well. If they are anywhere near as nice as the spinning reel, that would definitely be the way to go for <$50.
>>
>>716175
I might still want to get rid of that W&M too if you are seriously wanting a low-pro. I'm thinkin like $30 and I'll spool it with whatever line you want and ship it.

Not 100% sure on it yet though.
>>
>>716190

>>
>>716193
I'm considering it, but you already spent 50 bucks on me, so I'd insist you put no line on it.
>>
>>716194
Look for em on eBay. Black is normally $50 and Silver is $60. But they go on sale a bit for $40/$50. I bet you could find a Black Max closer to $30 on eBay.

If you have a Dick's nearby, I think you should really go check out those Okumas though. Then make them price match the $35 online price (it will be $40 or $50 in-store). I'm seriously considering getting a second spinning one. That was such a nice reel for the price. I'm a big fan of Abu as you know, but if I wanted another spinning reel for <$40, I would buy a Stratus V over a Sienna, Cardinal, or any other reel in that range.
>>

Idk, I haven't spooled it up yet. It seems decent. Definitely not as nice as a $160 Abu reel, but probably a little nicer than the Silver Max. I'm also not an expert on baitcasters, I have only used the two reels my whole life.

If you want to do it just paypal me and I will USPS it. At least for $30, shipping should be covered too. Part of me wants to keep it but I just know I'm never going to use it. I thought about giving it to my lil bro but I don't think he will use it much. I'd rather see somebody actually use the thing.

Here in florida, if you want a fun fight, you don't go for bass. here's what you need.

Light action rod.
15lb mono.
heavy plastic weight, heavier the better with a big ass hook.

I've reeled in more gators this way then any other way, its so fucking fun. doesn't even hurt the gators cause the hook get stuck under the scales, I've never actually made one bleed doing this. funny pulling them up onto the bank, and all the tourist and shit coming off from the bars are like OMG WHAT THE FUCK. as its hissing its ass off at me, and I just stand up, grab my dedicated "gator noose" [some rope I keep in my fishing bag, already tied in a noose] and step onto the back of its head if its small, sit on it if its bigger. and the tourist are like OMG WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO WITH IT?! and my reply is. "I'm gonna make myself a purse" I had a lady once ask me if she could have it so she could get it made into a pair of heels. lmao drunk people are great..

How is that 13 Fishing stuff? I had never heard of them until I started seeing ads for their stuff in the MTB's. Looks nice, reminds me of Quantum where they try real hard to make em look cool. Which I'm down with if they perform.

Also, what's the word on Ardent? They have tons of stuff with mid-range pricing which I like, but I haven't heard a ton. I just like established companies like Shimano, Abu, and Pflueger because I know it will never be an issue with service or parts or anything in the future.

13 fishing has made a good reputation for itself in the short time it has existed. They are very unique-they use batson components and a bunch of other weird shit like toray blanks on a 100 dollar rod.
Their rods recieve a lot of praise because of this, and their marketing team does a really good job. I've held the concept series in my hand before and was amazed at how tiny they were. They concepts were similar in size to a curado/chronarch/core 50 size.
As for ardent...they used to pride themselves on american made stuff. Now they outsource reels. Nobody wants to fork over 100+ for untested and unused reels. They don't have the pedigree that other manufacturers enjoy.

I sent you an email.

Damn this rod would be a good deal if I wanted to keep that reel. $19 off of $59. But then they want regular shipping fees plus $10 more because it's a rod. Kinda sucks.

So if you put this W&M reel on that rod you have the Abu on, what are you thinkin about for a new one for the Abu? Just an Ugly Stik or something?

And you have a Shimano rod currently on that one, right? How do you like it? I've been curious about their lower-mid range rods. Theh look decent enough, and cheaper Shimano reels are nice so the rods can't be bad. Too bad Shimano doesn't have any baitcasters under $150. Suprising because they have a handful of cheaper spinning reels.
>>
>>716284
Shimano does have baitcasters under 150.
You can find the new castias and caenan for around 100ish. The citica can be found for 130.
>>
>>716286
I was only looking on Bass Pro. I think the Citica was the cheapest they had and that was still pretty pricy.

I mean it isn't unreasonable for a baitcaster though. But still seems like they could put out a $50-$80 reel like Abu and Quantum.
>>
>>716287
Even then, only shimano can be ballsy enough to offer graphite baitcasters for 100+. The citica is as low as I would go for shimano.
>>
>>716270

Well obviously there are a lot of comically inexperienced people who fish, I've seen people holding spinning gear upside down. Just because baitcasters have a learning curve doesn't make them shit.
>>
>>716290
Man idk what my Revo SX is made out of, but that thing is so fucking light. When it came in the mail, I thought they fucked up and the box was empty.

It's on that CarbonLite rod too, and that rod and reel combo probably weighs less than my Shimano 500 ultralight spinning reel. It's ridiculous.

I have an old wright and mcgill 2 piece rod like 7 foot long, heavy action. prob from the 70's its pretty fucking beat up. but all its bits and pieces was there. and the guy just gave it to me for free. one day ill get around to re-finishing it and re-wrapping all the eyes. and getting some foam or cork to replace the handle. too bad it never had a reel, only reason why I haven't restored it. Pretty sure it was a fly rod anyway.. scraping the old flaky finish off, I fucked up the original signature. but idc because not like it was worth any money and I got it for free. lmao

BTW if anyone wants to re-finish any of these old rods.

Ace hardware sells a in house brand generic version of spar urethane. none of the stores seem to carry it but it sells online. its 17 bucks, instead of helmsmen 44.. and to me there is yet a noticeable difference. one day i might compare the MSD sheets.

its not even about just the learning curve of using them. you splash a little salt water in them. and holy shit everyone I've taken apart in the field to clean before shoving back into the car. has been a real pain in the ass. compared to spinners.

I didn't know they went that far back. But I guess they are a reputable brand. Dick's sells W&M Skeet Reese rods for $100 that are supposed to be pretty damn nice and they go on sale quite a bit. They were BOGO on Black Friday and it was enticing but I didn't really need 2 rods. Would've bought one for $50 when I got that Okuma reel though.

But I'm still really happy with that Berkley Lightning Rod Shock I bought at Walmart at 2am for that Okuma. Those are really nice budget rods. I would def consider one of those over an Ugly Stik since they are similarly priced.
>>
>>716297
You do realize that a lot of inshore fisherman like using baitcasters, right? I rinse both my spinners and baitcasters with fresh water. I don't do a complete teardown until 10 trips.
>>
>>716300
From my little bit of research, wright and mcgill started off building rods of wood in if I remember correctly, the 50s. [most likely cane..] and if you find one that isn't snapped in half, they have huge collection value. so keep them peepers peeled.

tho I'm assuming by now that the name has changed hands more then once and its no longer owned by the original family.
>>
>>716284
its not too bad, though i broke about 2 inches off the tip pretty fast. but aside from that no issues. id say it preforms how id expext it to given the cost. i still think i should have just gotten an uglystik instead though
and im not really sure what im going to put my ambassadeur on. maybe a heavy gx2? idk
>>
>>716305
They are owned by Eagle Claw now.
>>
>>716303
you do realize that my opinion comes with dealing with those who use them. there for I understand people like them and what not. I'm saying, bait casters were just a way to reinvent the wheel. a way for someone at a point in time, to try to sell them off by saying "CATCH TEN TIMES MORE FISH WITH THIS NEW SPACE-AGED REEL!"

its like rubber plastic baits. there is so many different kinds some people swear by some, while others really hate them.. fishing is always been a "how many fish can you catch" and "my fish is bigger than your fish." and will always be this way.
>>
>>716307
Interesting. do you know anything about Shakespeare history? god It was like maybe 12 years ago. my uncle bought me a 70 dollar shakespeare rod/reel from walmart down in south florida. thing lasted me about 11 years before it just gave up the goat..I was like cool let me buy a replacement rod and just use a spare reel i had on it.

>Tip broke in like 6 trips.

did they just go to shit between then and now, or did I just get really lucky?

I normally just buy rods and reels from pawn shops, or get them for free off Craigslist. its good because im a cheap ass, and sometimes I do stupid shit like cut the rod down to 4 eyes so I can cast under thick bushes and shit.
>>
>>716308
My opinion comes from using both lol, both spinning reels and baitcasting reels are old as fuck. Ofc companies will try to advertise their products to make money.

It really depends
For ease of use and maintainance the spinning reel wins
But Baitcasters don't put twist in the line, ate generally slightly stronger because they sit tighter to the rod, and are generally lighter and smaller for how much line they hold
I mean compare 220+ yards of 20 pound test mono that my Penn mag 525 holds only being about 1.5 inches around to the size of a spinning reel to get that same capacity
And that efficiency just keeps going up
I mean in a space only slightly bigger than a Coke can my Penn long beach no68 holds 500 yards of 50 pound mono. Imagine the size of a spinning reel you'd need to do that. Basically I like spinning reels for smaller stuff and meme casters for bigger stuff
A 4500 is all the bigger I'd go with a spinning reel, and that's pushing it.
Just remember there is a time and place for everything.

Shakespeare might be Pure Fishing. Like half the stuff in any given tackle shop or fishing section of a store is Pure Fishing. There are only a couple companies that own pretty much all the major brands. Shimano owns Power Pro and I'm sure some other shit.

And Pure Fishing is owned by a company called Jarden. They own Yankee Candle, Marmot, Coleman, Rawlings (Baseball), Penn, Shakespeare, Abu, Pflueger, Berkley, Mr. Coffee, K2 (skis), Sunbeam (appliances), plus more.

There are so many companies like that if you really look into it. It's crazy. I mean lots of the companies are still somewhat independently run. Like Abu Garcia and Shakespeare rods are probably designed by different people in different places, but may be manufactured in the same facilities.

The main lake in the middle there is a decent size and the odd shape makes it good for shore fishing. And the canals aren't bad either.

Two lakes good for bass fishing. two different areas, they aren't near each other, but easy enuff to google. the poorly drawn line in the middle was suppose to make it less confusing to look at. both lakes require a boat, neither of them you can shore fish from..

I feel ya. When i worked as a hotel restaurant waiter i had to run between an extremely hot and humid kitchen, and the very cold, airconditioned restaurant area. How are those canals not literally sewer-stink tier?
>>
>>716488
Depends where you are. A lot of the water in the canals is straight from the Everglades. They have big flood gates at the end of the swamp that let water into these canals so there is a current going towards the ocean lots of days.

As for the Intercoastal and the canals in that pic, somebody was recently telling me that in the 90s, there used to be tons of sea life in them but with all the boat traffic and civilization it isn't the same anymore. But the freshwater canals don't seem too bad. The fish look healthy enough, but I still wouldn't eat them.

Ill check it. The way i use swivel clips, main line -> SC -> lure

I know it aint right but im lazy often.
>>
>>716509
>main line -> SC -> lure
yep, me too but and while I hadn't broken a swivelclip I've heard it over and over from other anglers Having what they thought was the catch of a lifetime and then pulling out a bent & unsnapped/mangled SC with no fish or lure.

The Spro swivel and paperclip style quick clip is damn near bullet proof from what I can see so far. Those clips are easier than SCs to change lures/leaders as well.
>>
>>716519
Yeah they look mad strong. I just dont trust something that doesnt close in some way. But i will try to find something similar.

Ive never lost a fish or terminal tackle due to swivel clips failing. Ive had some mad stuck-in-rock hook in my carp fishing times. Either the leader or knot fails, or the hook gets unstuck.

What knot you guys use to spool braid?
I used the arbor knot with mono so far, but not like it ever mattered, i never went lower than half a spool-full on a cast.
>>
>>716552
Very comfy. I can't wait for summer though. I want to go farther up this river/creek, but there's a bunch of logs in the way and I don't really feel like getting wet right now to go around them.

>>716575
I spooled braid this morning and used the arbor knot and it seems to be working okay
>>
>>716575
I don't even use a correct knot. I know you're supposed to do an arbor knot, but I do the first step of tying shoes once, then double back around and do it another two times.

As long as it's tight and I make sure to keep good pressure on the line while I spool it, there doesn't seem to be an issue. I think the last few reels I have spooled up have had the little rubber strip on them anyway.

In the future if I have to spool a reel without the rubber strip, I will def just use electrical tape around the spool instead of a mono backing.
>>
>>716583
Im thinking i have to use mono backing, because i have 300 meters of 0.30 braid, and the reel holds 250m of 0.40, 160m of 0.50, 110m of 0.60. Its safe to assume 300m of 0.30 will be too little.

Does the electriacl tape have to cover the entire height of the spool, or jsut one small strip around it?

>>716580
Me too mang, cant wait for dat heat.
Caught my biggest gilt-head in may in summer temps.

Aight, i figured the arbor will work, thanks.

Prolly gonna spool dat braid on tomorrow.

>Sidenote: Full reccomend on this line. Not too expensive, strong enough, and never gave me trouble with anything. 10/10.
>>
>>716588
One little strip of tape should be fine. Just has to be enough to tie a good knot around so it won't slip.

And you can do the backing if you want, but I always found those line capacity ratings to be a little too much. Or if I actually get close to them, the reel seems to be overflowing. I bet that 300m spool will fill it. But I mean with 300m of line, if you want to do 50m of mono backing, go for it. You probably won't get anywhere near it anyway unless you are trolling. You just might have a lil extra braid left over.
>>

do these even work?
