I even had to outfit my old boss with "high tech" shit so he could get wifi to do business while camping with his family while on vacation. So, he had a laptop with a USB wifi dongle fitted into a dish. He said it was the best vacation ever simply because he could get wifi.

I really don't get it at all. Can someone explain this to me? Is it just like all hobbies where the mediocre majority starts to shit it up when it becomes more accessible to them? At least I have the choice of moving to another location and don't need to hear "beep-bloop ding" shit at 2am.
>>

80% of th people you see camping, hiking, etc., don't even like it. In fact, most of them are first timers that are giving it a try because they see how cool the photos look or whatever other reason.
>>
Phone gets turned off when I go out. Only piece of electronic gear that I use with frequency is my camera.

Biolite stove is unnecessary.

Solar chargers,, sure at a push could be useful for extended trips to recharge camera batteries and 18650s for my head torch.
>>
>>711355
>most of them are first timers
Likely, I remember when I started to go /out/ by myself (used to hike a lot as a kid with my parents). I bought tons of gimmicks n shit, and was surprised that it was heavy to carry.
Still don't get it why people bring tablets or similar, for me the reason to go out is to disconnect a bit with society and connect a bit more with nature. Bringing electronics sees a bit counter intuitive to me.

How do you guys shitpost in the wilderness?
>>
>>711350
That's so sad. They're just putting up with nature instead of enjoying it.

Last summer I went out to 'the lake' for a couple weeks. Its NF land with some established campsites on one side and a damn-near impossible to traverse trail to an area where I stayed. I biked (pedal) 80 miles to get there, cooked trout over an open cedar fire and rice in a steel cup, drinking water filtered from the lake. I slept in a bivvy on the ground and pondered the lives of my woodland neighbors. On the last night, I stayed on the side of the lake where the campsites were so I could get a faster start in the morning. All night, all I heard was bitching from people in RVs about how there were too many mosquitoes and their champagne wasn't cold enough. Other than that, best trip of my life.

>Lol. Captcha: Select RVs.
Never!

Honestly, I shit in the middle of the trail. I look for a good spot and take a dump, and I am smiling whilst doing so. I always think about the people that will pass by and see my huge turd stinking and rotting and full of flies, in the middle of the trail. Once I decorated an enormous specimen with a little toothpick flag, I have been giggling all day.

Millennials are a wasted generation that requires validation in everything that they do, so they can't comprehend being two seconds without their iShit to show their faggy friends how "manly" they are for daring to step outside their safespace into the outside, longer than it takes to get to their fixie or the closest public transport.

Even without those devices, they wouldn't have been able to string together more than one sentence anyway, and would have laughed to themselves at the faggy meme they dropped into the conversation with you, then tweeted it to the local Bernie Sanders hugbox.

Besides maps, I only bring 1 paperback per trip, it is one of the luxury items I bring. I enjoy reading on long evenings or when I got to weather out. I may be a bit old fashioned, but I enjoy that things are a bit simpler /out/ then in my daily life.

I put mine on airplane mode and use it as my camera. I tell friends and family that I'm going camping and that's that. They understand they won't hear from me. I shut off airplane mode before bed and check and see if anything super serious happened. I keep partially in touch because I like to check in each night just in case something happens, they will know my last whereabouts.

I've been going /out/ since before miniaturized digital toys became popular
I never needed them then, so I don't need them now.

As a millennial who grew up in the woods in the 1980s and early 1990s, I have to disagree. This shit didn't start until cellphones and cellular coverage started getting huge. Now there's more powerful batteries and lower power use technology that enables people to take this shit into the woods.

This goes for everyone from old grandparents to 8 year olds. So, I know it isn't just a single demographic. This stuff is pervasive across all generations.

Because most campers are hipsters. I live up in northern Idaho where people grew up hunting for food, chopping wood, fixing their own trucks, stock piling on gas and food, hearing their homes with wood stoves, etc. Faggots come up here thinking they can buy the experience. People literally stopped selling their land to these kids because all they do is move their tiny house in and start "organic" gardens and complain 24/7 about everything. They want to start conversation every time at the gas station complaining about why the closest gas station is 45 minutes away. Fuck off back to Washington, Oregon, or California faggots and shove your meme houses up your ass.

>>

Beautiful area. Lighting is a little harsh, would've made a better picture in late afternoon or early morning but you don't really get to pick and choose the perfect time of day for taking pictures while you're hiking. I live in TX very close to the Arkansas border and want to take a few backpacking trips up in the Ozarks this year, there are a couple of decent looking loop trails that would be nice, I'm not real wild about the idea of hiking in and then back out covering the same ground twice, and I don't want to inconvenience anyone else by having them drop me off at the beginning of the trail and then coming back a few days later to pick me up at the end of the trail.

>>
>>711498
It's not just their complaining that sucks, they also try to push their "farming" practices, politics, alternative lifestyle, and warped brand of environmentalism on everyone around them. I love seeing the look of horror that flashes across their face when I tell them that I use chemical fertilizers in my garden and liberally apply glyphosate around the property to control weeds and keep my fence lines clear.
>>
I'm normally busy enough when /out/ that I don't have time to fuck around on my phone. I'll leave it turned off for the most part but will turn it on 2-3 times a day to check for missed texts or voicemails, look at weather radar and forecast, and look at a map if I need to but then it gets turned back off. At night I'll read a book while laying in my hammock / tent until I'm sleepy.
>>
>>711671

If you're using it as your sole method to control weeds, you're going to eventually get weeds that are resistant to it. Then you go back to pulling them out by hand and using stronger stuff, which the weeds will eventually overcome if you overuse those substances.

Roundup is not a magic cure-all for weeds. Its overuse is why weed resistance to the stuff has become so widespread. It was an easy thing to see coming.
>>
>>711699
I don't use roundup in my gardens, that's what mulch is for. I generally spray my fence rows 2-3 times a year with a mixture of roundup, remedy (or other broadleaf herbicide), and a surfactant. I'll use a pre-emergent herbicide (post) on a few specific cases. I was exaggerating and oversimplifying my usage of glyphosate in my earlier post, I keep an up to date pesticide/herbicide applicator's license and am well aware of good and bad practices as well as what leads to herbicide resistance.

People don't really enjoy doing anything simplistic anymore. They're overstimulated by the deceptions of consumerism and their weekend outdoors is just another stimulation where they wouldn't feel compatible without their electronics, because they're not. They're not compatible with nature. They grow up in coccoons that protect them from hardening and they will enitably never form a sence of quiet nights by the fire just having their senses hightened by the fresh air and the calm surroundings. All they do is missbout on what is truly good.

That's what I've been thinking while reading this thread.

The rest of you fuckers need to stop camping in your backyard if you hate phones so much. Shit, I stayed at a campground in a modern cabin and the phone was next to useless thanks to no service and shitty apps unable to verify anything.

I only bring a cellular for emergencies (turned off and in a ziplock to prevent water damage) and a flashlight. I do not bring a camera because visual descriptions let me develop my prose.

I don't usually see other trail users with electronic devices other than cameras. maybe 1 in 10. Then again I go hiking in the rain often, so perhaps I encounter more outdoors enthusiasts than most.

I bring my phone but keep it in airplane mode until before I go to bed to check in real quick. here is a tip. stop worrying about other people and start worrying about yourself and your surroundings. if you dont like people or connecting with others, change your surroundings to fit your desires. they could care less what some forestdweller thinks, and at the end of the day, you're the one with the ruined mood shitposting and complaining online about it.

For those of you who are looking for an emergency lifeline, but don't want the temptation of tech, get a prepay dumb-phone with no service. The battery will last for weeks and you still have 911 (or probably equivalent) service without having to pay a bill.

I'll reiterate. You still get 911 on phones without service.

is it the norm to have mobile reception when you're /out/ where you are?
In Australia if you go anywhere that's decently enough out of the city in national parks etc there's usually no coverage.
>>
>>713311
Most of the USA has good coverage now, except the Greenbank area which is off limits. There's 100% coverage for satellite and about 90% everywhere else. Only Alaska has the least amount of coverage.

Thankfully, I live in an area where there's places of no coverage. However, every year the coverage gets better and better.

I keep my cell phone with me when I'm innawoods, but it's because I A: have kids, and B: keep all my books on it and I like to read after dark.

But during the day I'm usually busy and don't really use it unless I feel like playing some music while cooking or something.
>>

I disagree. My wife is 26 and her brother is ten years younger and neither of them are like what you describe. Of course, they were both raised in Shelby County Texas and are country as fuck. My wife will shit into a hole faster than I will and my brother in law is essentially a teen version of Jed Clampett.

I think it's just city people in general who are shit. Like, I only go camping in shitty, cold, rainy weather because that drives off the city folk. I'd they're around, it's slamming car doors, barking dogs and fucking megawatt lighting all night long. And that's if they don't park a house-sized RV next to you and run a giant air conditioner all night.

>>712327

Agree.

I've been feeling a bit of anxiety lately so I went /out/ for a week. As soon as I got out there I felt like a weight was lifted from my chest.

I realised that I'd somehow become addicted to slurping up the shit feed of the internet. I'd been checking facebook, twitter and gmail first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I think it's got to do with some twisted kind of fear of missing out, plus filling every tiny gap of time by seeking out new content on the net. It's almost like poker machines, how they're engineered to give you little hits of success at the right time to get you addicted.

Was fucking disgusted with myself when I realised how often I had been reaching for my phone, which I'd turned off and taken the battery out of (still took it in case of emergency).

Being able to just sit and think or engage with the actual fucking world is somehow just so much less stressful.

>>
I don't have any ideological bent against taking tech with me, it is just difficult to keep shit charged for more than a day.

That adds weight to your pack. If you want to solar charge you need a much bigger array than you think you will to actually charge as fast as you would from an outlet, and/or a big lithium power bank. Both ideally.

This is enough to keep a phone charged. Tablets suck down vastly more power just for a bigger screen, that's where I draw the line.

A modern smartphone does absolutely everything. It's a camera. It's a GPS. It displays offline maps. It has a compass. It's a flashlight. It runs geocaching apps. It can store PDFs of books for identifying fungi and herbs.

That's why I consider a smartphone the one really strongly justifiable piece of tech to bring with you. It consumes a reasonable amount of power, is about the limit for what is possible to recharge from solar out in the boonies, and the sheer utility of it makes up for the hassle of the extra shit you need to bring to keep it powered.

judging from the exif data I'd guess HTC One. It's only 4.1 megapixels. Impressive quality for a tiny image sensor.

(actually i just got my first real smartphone today, and hate it even the fact it could save my life, GPS, call for helpp 911, i never use a phone, on a daily basis. phones are banned in my life.
no wild animals here that can kill me. i'm not affraid here.
but i would be in other places in the world
appart from europe, were i live.
i agree on what another person just said, dont bring your phone into the wild it is destroying the experience of nature,
you will just end up dreaming or listening to music and go by your day in a dream world
not paying attention to details.
phone a negative, i dont need help i dont
need to call anyone or for help.
i'm a survivor not a victim or a dreamer
that needs books or music.
all i need is the nature my wild animals and the camp fire and the stars in the sky
fuck smartphones they are created by satan
like the internet and all other pc and consols
to hell with it.

This. There's apparently no agreed start date for the millenial generation, but I'll be damned before I get lumped in with those cunts. b 1983

Personally I would class millenials as kids who were born after DSL was common in every household.
