No one cares.

Ultralight is a meme for hippies. Literally every ounce counter I know is some scrawny white guy with either dreadlocks or a nasty beard.

Beef Jersey, hard tack, and multi vitamins in the pocket behind the tent plus a full three liter camelback
>>
It's just two days, you don't need to pack that much retards. I think you're doing fine OP.
>>
>Beef jerky, hardtack and vitamins
>to go /out/ for 3 days

Why
>>
>>710818
I mean throw in a can of tuna and some trail mix if your picky...
>>
>>710820
Depending what you're doing those 3 days is that really enough calories? I mean if OP is fishing or trapping/hunting some small game to cook on a stick over the fire then I'd get it

>ul for 3 days
>mfw

when you have to haul food for 7+ into the back country, i can understand shaving weight, but for just a short trip like that? i legitimately take fresh onions and peppers, beer, and glass bottles of hot sauce. of course i also have 20+ pounds of climbing gear, so i'm already fucked on the ul front.
>>
>>710807
>meme vitamins
multivitamins are a waste of money at the best of times but if you're only going to be gone for two days why even bother?
>>
>>710794
What do you pack in there? I'm looking for a gear list for a 2 night trip.
>>
>>710823

It's 3 days. I went 3 weeks without a full meal in Iraq. Scared to lose a few pounds?
>>
>>710794
How far are you hiking on this three day two night trip? Because if it's less than forty-five miles you're an idiot.
>>
>>710875
not about to lose my gains for a meme pack
>>
>>710954
same here I get /out/ on a regular basis but enjoy not looking like a dirty hippie skeleton
>>
why do people hate ultralight packing so much? Seems more of a minimalist thing than a "i'm a frail skelliton" thing. It presents a challenge more than anything.
>>
>>711043
I don't understand the hate.
I'm not an ultra lighter and I don't understand UL people.

The most significant amount of weight you carry is on your body. Going to the gym 3 times a week beats spending big dollars on a fancy tent, pack, and titanium appliances.

All of an ultra lighter efforts are diverted into spending more money than other backpackers instead of roughing it.
>>
>tfw backpacking
>spot other backpackers dragging their 65L packs with extra items attached to the sides while wearing a 10 gallon hats
>just two miles into the trail and already huffing and puffing with some stopping to take a break
>walk past them and leave them in the dust
>able to cover 20 miles in one afternoon without breaking a sweat.
>able to make it out farther and faster than those house movers and their Flextrek Whipsnake edition packs.
>camp in pristine regions regular backpackers never get to.
>camp in a hammock and tarp that took minutes to set up
>see backpackers struggle with their 10 person tents
>with the extra time i'm able to make my camp cozy as fuck
>only pack food for 2 days because i can cover cover their 6 day journey in 2 days.

Feels good to be ULP
>>
>>711053
The reason I hate it is because it's kind of contradictory to me, backpacking , atleast for me isn't a sport , it's to relax and have fun... I would rather carry some extra weight and be comfy at camp and cover a little less mileage

However I understand if you're doing like a thru hike or whatever it's more of an Athletic event and you need to maximize distance

To each their own but I'm a big guy and I don't mind carrying an extra pound or two, doesnt make a huge dif to me, for instance I always bring my binoculars, dead weight to most ultra lighters but I enjoy using them and don't mind the weight
>>
>>711043

Because of the pointless one-up-manship. I'm here to chill in the fucking woods, not lord my /out/ness over basically fucking nobody.
>>
>>711087
funny, that's what you fags came to do to this thread. Just let us have our thread. I'm also here to chill in the woods.
>>
>>711043
>It presents a challenge more than anything.
For a few vocal ultralighters, gram-counting seems to be the only worthwhile /out/ pursuit. The only goal seems to be carrying the lightest pack, not enjoying the outdoors.

Of course, the vast majority of ultralighters aren't like that. This board just seems to perceive the whole group that way because of those loudmouths.
>>
I dont know what this ultralight meme comes from.

For all I know every single person now and throughout history always aims at cutting down weight of the shit they carry.

I use regular (good) hear and I'm happy with a weight of 10kg or less.

What I recommend is you set a goal to shave weight from your gear but also that you get used to more weight than that, so you can fill the remaining quota with water and food
>>
>>711090
That's because ultralighters are the vegans of backpacking. They just can't stop talking about how little grams their weak equipment weights, disregarding the fact that nobody asks them to explain.
>>
>>711053
Lol you dumb faggot my tent is from walmart
>>
>>711092
The only people who have talked about gram shaving or whatever the fuck you're on about are the heavypackfags...
>>
>>710948
Everybody always ignores the voice of reason.

UL doesn't mean shit to a car camper, except that they'll have less durable and effective gear. If you're thru-hiking or at least trying to do 15-30 mile days for a weekend trip, UL can be the difference between getting where you want to camp or having your body crap out on you before you get there.

It's like arguing about whether cars or trucks are better. Well, do you have to haul shit around a lot or do you mostly commute and need to save on gas? Different tools for different fools. What's best for you is never what's best for everybody else.

Anyone else hyperultralight minimalist here? Pic related, all I need for a Shasta ascent

>running up scree halfway up
>encounter group with gigantic backpacks, goggles, helmets, all sorts of shit
>ask them when they started since I didn't see them in the parking lot and I got going pretty early
>they brought tents, food, etc. and camped on the side of the mountain so they didn't have to climb it all in one day
This is why I don't understand non ultralighters, they pack so much shit that it slows them down to the point where they need even more gear, and the cycle continues until it takes them 2 days to do something that takes 3 hours

>>
>>711511
Ultralighters tend to prefer light weight trail runners over boots, ankle support isn't really necessary when you're carrying so little, and after a while of hiking with no ankle support your muscles get stronger and can support it. afaik there are even some ultralighters who use those vibram meme shoes.

>why not? There is no vid
>don't want to carry all this shit, must be a better way
>will do after work
>usually prepackaged food like jerky, cereal bars, etc
>back problems, desire to cover more ground I'm less time

It's not so much about carrying less than others, but being smart about certain trips. I work a lot and very frequently have minimal time to get out. If I can get off work at 3 on a Friday and on the trail by 4, I can get 7 or so miles done, 20 something the next two days, and have what should have been a five day trip done in three. Personally I agree that if I had the five days id bring normal shit, and I do whenever possible. For me it's more about versatility. Hence the tent, I'm sure most ultralighters would chastise me...

My packs base weight is at 11 pounds for my PCT Thru-hike. Add water and food and I'm looking at< 22 pounds. What's wrong with that?
>>
>>713994
That's not bad. I recently went to a PCT seminar-type thing at REI, the guy who gave it said his base weight was six pounds. There's no way I'm anywhere near that, but I also don't have the money to drop on great gear, so I'll just have to push through with what I've got.

As to side sleeping, that's really a personal preference you'll find out for yourself. I have no problem at all sleeping on my side with that combo, ymmv. However, if you're going true UL, I'd suggest an inflatable pillow to raise your head of the ground, seeing as if you've been a good little sc/out/ there shouldn't be any spare clothing left besides your sleep system.

I understand buying lightweight gear. All my /out/ gear is the lightest practical stuff I could find plus mandator carry Army gear when I'm out for work. But why carry next to nothing for short trips? Why not carry more stuff and enjoy your time instead of carrying 5kgs and struggling?
If you're struggling with the weight but you've spent that much on gear, you just look like the biggest weekend warrior IMO.
Also, the lack of water here concerns me.

Low weight actually makes hiking at all speeds more comfortable. In fact lets you speed through the boring parts of a trail and spend more time at the interesting sections.
