It's already slowing down. It'll probably peak around 9 billion at mid-century point.

Also remember that the largest city in the world has a metropolitan area something like a third the size of a place like Phoenix. Cities are the solution, not the problem.

As fucked up as it is, I kinda agree.

We really do need some sort of selective breeding before the planet ends up like that movie "Idiocracy". Poor people and stupid people having 5+ kids while hard working professionals might have one kid when they are 40.

No.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_and_fertility

But economic development lowers birth rates.

It isn't cities that'll be growing.

People who can afford to live in tower blocks don't have that many kids.

It'll be the shantytowns that stretch to the horizon. You can already see them in places like Lagos.

You haven't been to the hood.

And they have kids so young, that even if a girl only has 3 kids in here lifetime, it will be from age 16-20, then those 3 kids each have 3 kids by 20, and so on.

So in 60 years with a college-educated white couple that has 2-3 kids, they are probably waiting until their late 20s or early 30s to have kids. You will have 3 generations of white kids in 100 years while you have like 6 generations of hoodlums in 100 years. And that means exponentially more people.

Luckily half of them will die by 30 from shooting eachother.

I couldn't off hand remember if it was The Forever War or Old Man's War, but then I remembered they never come back to Earth in Old Man's War.

I just finished "Rendezvous with Rama" but I can't remember the titles of even half the stuff I've read that I like. It may be a little pulpy at times, but I love E. E. Smith's stuff (Lensmen series and Skylark series). The Mote in God's Eye was pretty good too, which Niven wrote with Jerry Pournelle. Stephen Baxter's Manifold Trilogy were good. So was Evolution by Baxtor. I have The Long Earth 1-4 by Terry Pratchett & Stephen Baxter, but haven't started.

>A World Out of Time

Wrote that one down.

>Against the Fall of Night

I haven't got around to that one either.

If you like really short reads and puply sci-fi, try the Richard Blade series and The General series (Raj Whitehall series).

Because even if it is made in the USA, it is normally made by minorities. Now stuff you are personally DIYing is different, but the PCB in your image uses components you don't manufacture at home. New York City is actually one of the most resource efficient places per person in the world.
>>
>>704824
Yes and no.

Apparently the ideal housing, from an energy efficiency standpoint is around 6 or 7 stories.

Below that, the AC isn't efficient enough, above that, too much energy does to the elevators.

The idea would be 7 stories, and everyone walking, riding bikes, or taking the subway.
>>
>>704830
>above that, too much energy goes to the elevators

So get rid of all the elevators and make rental prices inversely proportional to floor number. Lazy, rich people will inhabit the lower floors and the poor people would still have an affordable place to live with the tradeoff that they'd be climbing stairs for 30 mins a day. The average city dweller could do with an extra 30 minutes of stair climbing a day to meet their exercise needs.
>>
>>704445
>end welfare for nigs and natives and everything will sort itself out
>>
>>704830
I assume your source is Kunstler, and the only way he could find that is if making a building taller was otherwise energy-neutral, because elevators do not consume tons of electricity. The elevators in a typical 20 story building will consume about as much energy as 2 cars commuting in from the suburbs.

But that's still only taking the building in a vacuum. The point of building tall is density, and density pays massive dividends in energy efficiency -- like eliminating those cars commuting in from the suburbs.

The only reason there are 7 billion people now is that we've discovered how to use fossil fuels. If you put ten mice in a room with unlimited food they will breed until the room explodes. We will run out of fossil fuels soon. It will start by food prices exploding then rioting in the streets. Within 3 weeks the human race consists of gangs of cannibals and there prey.
But don't worry, this is an /out/ists dream, wait in the deep forest while shtf. Come back to find the cities have returned to nature and all those littering rednecks are dead.

There are people in this thread that actually think overpopulation is white people having too many kids and not brown ones.

Whites and Japs need more babies like mad. We're fucked because we stopped.
>>
>>704485
>Cities are the solution, not the problem.

I have to disagree. Sticking a large population of people into a small area that can't grow enough food or provide enough water to keep those people alive is ridiculous. Most large cities have to import food and water to keep them selves going, while also exporting waste because they don't have anywhere to put it.

The most efficient way for us to live, though this is efficient in the sense that we would use less energy to transport necessary resources, would be to spread out and build small communities around agricultural rich areas. Of course, this would require a completely different way of thinking and we'd have to scrap the perpetual growth idea's we've come to believe in, but it could also solve many of our current problems. We have scraped so much human labor on farms for fossil fuel powered machines, but if we left the cities and lived around the farms, then we'd have more labor available, and could stop using so much machinery. All of a sudden people have important work to do, jobs are numerous and we become less dependent upon fossil fuels.
>>
>>705673
But the lower the population density, the more you rely on the internal combustion engine as a means of transport.

Unless you're suggesting we go without hospitals, TVs, strip malls, supermarkets, and sex shops.

Ain't gonna happen. Only 3% of the US population is engaged in agriculture, and to go back to the fields would be to accept a massive decline in standard of living for no real reasons.
>>
>>705673
THAT'S IT!!

FUCK YOU ALL!!

I'm converting to Amishness and gonna get me three young wives and a big fucking tractor! I will Tweet you when I do!
>>
>>705676
>Unless you're suggesting we go without hospitals

Hospitals would benefit from being smaller but more numerous.
The trick would be paying for that.
>>
>>705676
Just imagine spreading out the millions living in cities into smaller (max 100,000) sized communities. They'd be all fairly close together, so transport could easily be done via rail or public bus. There would be small communities surrounding larger centers (the max size) that have more services and entertainment. Hell, even with 20,000 population you can still have small clinics, strip malls, supermarkets, and sex shops. Have you ever been to small towns? They have those needs covered.

By switching over to this type of living, the mono-culture type farm would be transitioned into one that grows a wide variety because it will be seeking to fulfill the dietary needs of the community, and not making the highest dollar off the open market, where their crop would eventually be utilized thousands of miles away.

I get that it is very unlikely to ever happen, and the only way people would stop living in large cities is if a devastating disease made it too risky or if a substantial economic collapse forced them into the rural areas looking for land to grow food.
>>
>>705677
We could all learn a thing or two from the Amish desu. They understand the importance of being independent from far away places.

>>
People in this thread are being mislead and deluded by false information. Overpopulation is a myth. Studies show that we're actually heading towards UNDERpopulation.

>Recently the United Nations Population Division estimated that 44 percent of the world's people live in countries where the fertility rate has already fallen below the replacement rate, and fertility is falling fast almost everywhere else.

http://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/defusing-population-bomb

It's also worth mentioning that according to the people who started the "overpopulation" craze in the 60s and 70s, we should all be starving to death right now.
>>
>>705721

And you are going to hell, by the wayfullness.

>>705729
And don't be so judhemental, dude. Mormons are cool bros and broettes.
>>
>>705673
That's not efficient at all. Efficiency comes from economies of scale and specialization. Currently, 2% of our population farm, with another 15% in the food industry. There's not a massive amount of arable land out there that's not being used; in fact, we're farming plenty of land that really isn't arable (most of California). Bump up to, say, 20% of the population farming, and suddenly all of the farmers have a tenth of the wealth that they have now. This is not efficient. In fact, it would push farmers towards terrible farming practices, just to make ends meet. Intensive farming that depletes the soil, farming marginal land, farming desert with aquifer water -- all the bad stuff about farming today, times 10. And for what? It's no more sustainable, and if Medieval Europe is any guide, it would start urbanizing again anyway. There would just be a lot of suffering in the meantime.
>>
>>705711
What part of "a city of 10 million is more resource efficient than a city of 100,000 or 20,000" aren't you getting here.

I assumed you were talking about everyone returning to agrarian subsistence farming.

That may be stupid, but at least it would actually work in economic terms.

Just a rant about junk. There's so much fucking useless junk bought and made, shipped all over the place. "knick knacks", novelties, crappy chinese goods that break when you use them, other shit, everything wrapped in plastic and carted around using gasoline/diesel. I get that people need stuff to live, but no one needs a talking wall fish or ten thousand gag gifts. It's just wasteful of natural resources. Most of this shit ends up in a landfill eventually. Meanwhile, houses are bigger to fit all this junk in it, more heating and air conditioning, more construction cost and time, more chemical cleaning agents, more land used. People buy way too damn much shit. You can agree instead of spending our collective resources to make 5 widgets which all break after a month, we should put a little more labor cost to make one widget which lasts forever? 1/5 of the resources and shipping costs. Better end result, less in landfill.

Everyone who shops at walmart should be shot.

Same. I have relations on both sides of the family who bred enough. My genes are already well propagated. If we can get /biz/ here, I'm looking forward to the heaps of money saved that I can then spend on myself, probably going /out/ and /trv/. Having kids is great for certain people who like caring for others, but not everyone needs to breed. So if you don't like kids in particular anyway, why bother? I hate kids. I don't need to subject myself to 20+ years of torture just to "spread my genes" when they're already spread.

My mom's parents had 7 kids, and on my dad's side his aunt had 9. There's my genes, very well distributed already. Thanks senpai.

It depends on how you want to look at it on one level it did work because Germany is very energy efficient, maintains high standards of living, strict environmental regulations for thugs that pollute air and water. But it is a failure in the sense that there is no place in German that is a natural landscape because people are so spread out they impact everything. There rivers are channels, their deltas are cities, there marshes are drained, and their forests are disjointed by a patchwork of towns and farms.

Not all of this is entirely due to the lack of heavy urbanization in Germany, it is partially due to much of the human development happening before people understood or cared about the environmental impacts of development. But I still believe that the population being spread out is one of the primary factors in why Germany has destroyed their environment.

This is why in the US there has been a shift to heavy urbanization and less rural or suburban blight.

What state should I move to if I want

>Cheap housing + high speed internet
Someplace with <$200K houses that aren't small shacks. Also need internet because I "work from home".

>Gun freedoms and hunting
I have a concealed carry permit and quite a few firearms. Would like a plethora of game to hunt year round while /out/

>Secluded lakes where I can go hiking, fishing, and camping within a hour or two drive if not in backyard.
I never plan a hiking trip unless there's a lake or pond near that I can fish from.

Currently living in Virgnia and it's fucking disgusting here. All of the National Parks and Forests are usually flooded with college students and there's hardly any good fishing spots besides the big rivers which requires a boat.

Northern Wisconsin is a great place if you don't mind winter. Otherwise maybe TN or northern Georgia? With both those places, you could still be relatively close to a big city and still be out in the boonies. Not sure about gun laws. But it always amazed me driving through TN how you are in wilderness and then 20min later you are in downtown Nashville.
>>
>>708710

>>
>>708713
Northern Wisconsin is all forests. If you can find a good chunk of land that isn't forest preserve, no way it can be that expensive.

>mfw I live in Virginia
>mfw I love it here

It sounds like you need to make friends who have private land.
>>
>>708725
I live in Texas. Land prices vary depending on region.. Out in the arid / semi-arid regions of West/Central TX land isn't too expensive.. but those areas are dry and rocky and the only trees that grow out there are scrubby mesquite and oak trees with lots of brush all over. Places with more rainfall, decent soil, and actual forests like North/East TX you're lucky to find any land for less than $2000/acre, and that's out in the sticks where you can't get any sort of water, sewer, or decent internet. Property taxes in TX also tend to be fairly high so if you're gonna own any sort of acreage then you'll need to figure out how to keep that acreage under a farm / ag / wildlife tax exemption.

Thinking of finding a place in the south where I can get no state income tax and then drive over a bridge to Oregon for shopping at no sales tax.

100% this. Japan is an example of the coming future of western countries.

The rise of feminism makes women disinterested in having a family and more concerned with having a job.
With the rise in VR, men will become more interesting in virtual means of a sexual relationship. It may be a good thing because the last thing the planet needs is more mouths to feed.

The thing I fear the most is that the only families that have multiple children are religious families, more so Christian and Islamic families, and God knows we don't need a rise in the population of those fuckers.

The exhausting of fossil fuels has been predicted since the 19th century about coal and since 1920s for oil. Your assumption is based on the oil supply being halted tomorrow, which simply won't happen. There's too much oil out there.

Economically speaking, oil is an unlimited resource, because when it's cost increases, a substitute or replacement will be taken more seriously, like retrofitted hydrogen fueled engines. The same type of panic arose when whaling was banned and everything relied on whale oil.

we are terraforming our own planet and for first time in human history we are affecting the weather.
we are in an ice age, which means in a coupe of thousand years 99% of the biosphere could be extinct because the ice will cover most of the planet. even warming earth a couple of degrees can stop this process and save biodiversity.
it's the most exciting and awesome stuff so far.
just don't overdo it i guess.

>we are terraforming our own planet

''Terraforming is the process of transforming a hostile environment into one suitable for human life. ''

What we are doing is the OPPOSITE. Carbon emissions, increased episodes of extreme weather including drought and flooding, desertification of land, species extinction, etc etc are all DETRIMENTAL to human life not beneficial

>for first time in human history we are affecting the weather.

Apart from we didn't INTEND to effect it. It wasn't our purpose to warm the world, its a side effect of our mentality towards growth, development, societal responsibility, and focus on economy and power.
>>
>>710065
>''Terraforming is the process of transforming a hostile environment into one suitable for human life. ''
exactly a full blown ice age is pretty hostile to human life
>Carbon emissions, increased episodes of extreme weather including drought and flooding, desertification of land, species extinction, etc etc are all DETRIMENTAL to human life not beneficial
short term effects not what i'm really hyped about mostly blown out of proportion.

earth as a planet has a constantly changing weather just because old fucks complain about not being the same as in their childhood doesn't mean it's "wrong"

just red a bit about this glacial cycle thing and understand THERE WERE LONG PEROIODS OF TIME IN EARTHS EXISTENCE WHEN THERE WERE NOT EVEN SNOWCAPS ON THE POLES NADA

>>
>>710002
>>710077
We are not in an ice age and we won't be for a while because of the rate of fucking shit up we're at right now. Humans have in roughly 2 centuries cocked up the natural cycle, and while affecting the planet on such a massive scale is inspiring it's also not what we intended. A full blown ice age is hostile to human life but so is our current rate of global warming. While our existence and effects are really short term, that doesn't make it suck any less for us as we slide towards the next major event in humanity's future.
>>
>>710077

You're being obtuse. We aren't polluting the atmosphere (+ everything else) for the purpose of negating an ice age.

Also, I don't think you understand what an ice age necessarily means. It DOESN'T mean whole world is -20c and everything dies off.

There is no problem with ice ages and ice age cycles, what we're talking about here is something other than the natural cycle the planet goes through. What we're talking about is unnecessary detrimental effect to the world which one day, maybe not today, will fail under the ever increasing burden of dealing with our waste.

>earth as a planet has a constantly changing weather just because old fucks complain about not being the same as in their childhood doesn't mean it's "wrong"

Actually this is one of the root causes of lack of understanding in terms of climate change. Because individuals have no reference to previous generations habitats they take what they grow up with as normal and don't realise the impact already made.

It's one of the core reasons cited as to why societies collapse, such as easter island.

Let me assume you're not some 15 year old autist..

Do you have kids? Do you care about the legacy you leave them? Would you be happy leaving them indebted by millions of dollars? Probably not, so why do you not mind about leaving them a stinking turd of an earth?

Ultimately, you can make whatever choices you want. But for all your MUH FREEDOMS (you're american right?) you have an uncanny ability to circumvent the fact that by being complicit to all the pollution you have infringing on your neighbours, offspring, and any future generations 'freedoms'.

tl;dr I always have the time to try and educate people for the sake of the human race and this planet, but if you're too bigoted to listen I can only hope you die young before you've spread your filth too far.
>>
>>710290
>We are not in an ice age
look up the definition dude!
permanent ice cover on the poles == ice age.

what we did (or not did it's yet to be proven) is nothing compared to the normal climate changes of the earth. but maybe just maybe we increased the average temperature enough that it does not go into fully freezing up on us.

after the ice age ends i guess we should look into how to keep the temperature down for a change. but that is tens of thousands of years or more.
>>
>>710290
>An ice age is a period of long-term reduction in the temperature of Earth's surface and atmosphere, resulting in the presence or expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. Within a long-term ice age, individual pulses of cold climate are termed "glacial periods" (or alternatively "glacials" or "glaciations" or colloquially as "ice age"), and intermittent warm periods are called "interglacials". Glaciologically, ice age implies the presence of extensive ice sheets in the northern and southern hemispheres.[1] By this definition, we are in an interglacial period—the Holocene—of the ice age that began 2.6 million years ago at the start of the Pleistocene epoch, because the Greenland, Arctic, and Antarctic ice sheets still exist.[2]

by definition we live in an ice age

>>710315
>There is no problem with ice ages and ice age cycles, what we're talking about here is something other than the natural cycle the planet goes through.

the natural cycle ends in almost all the earth surface being covered in miles thick ice. no thank you maybe you want mammoths back i like the current biodiversity.

>do you not mind about leaving them a stinking turd of an earth?
not what's happening it's all good so far except for the garbage issues. i mean the entire fucking ocean is full of pet bottles i would do something about that. less worried about the temperature life will adapt to that. long term everything man made will be gone sure, but the future generations will have it ugly with garbage and toxins.
>>
>>710317

Better: an individual who lives their life with a sense of purpose, improving the lives of those around said individual.

Worse: an individual who cares only for their own well-being, sometimes at the expense of others' quality of life.

Are either of these predisposed by genetic makeup? Nope. It's all about how an individual was raised, and his/her life experiences. Through these things, world-view is formed.

If I had to hazard a guess as to your past, it might well include a broken home. I feel pity for you, but it's never too late to change who you are -- it just takes time and effort.
>>
>>711012
But your definitions are completely arbitrary. Obviously a sane answer to the question is another question: "Better at what, exactly?"
You must surely allow for multiple answers to the questions, different views etc..? Or is it your way or the highway?

You have absoluteley no idea if co-operation or ruthlessness or anything else has genetic reasons or to what extent. Culture is made in society. Societies are made of people. People are made in instruction by DNA. DNA is hereditary.
I don't think you even realize how inane you're being. The nature vs nurture debate is hardly resolved, and ESPECIALLY not in the favor of nurture as you seem to think.

The final solution to this problem of population is this, and it's working damn effectively.

High density cities,
The empowerment of women,
The shift away from traditional gender roles,
The support of disadvantaged groups from lower socioeconomic status,
And the improvement of healthcare for all.

People don't seem to be wanting to suffer through children for those reasons and all.

This guys has the solution.

Hate to break it to you, but oil and nat gas aint gonna run out. Not in our lifetimes anyway.

anon is right though. At least for a lot of places. Not sure about Africa but certainly in India it's becoming less common

No, it shows mice who're given food and ample space to study population growth

Not space, iirc, but The Wanting Seed by Anthony Burgess touches on similar themes.

How the fuck do either of these help stop overpopulation you dunce

I believe he is assuming negroes and spics can be raised up to white status at which point they will decline as we are.

Does not appear to be necessary for American negroes.

Personally I'm European and think we should just stop sending those "people" aid and keep them the fuck out of our country

Development lowers birth rates.

Improving swathes of Latin America from low income to middle income dramatically lowered their birth rates.

India, despite being poor as fuck, lowered their fertility from like 6 babies per woman to 2.3 over the course of a few generations.

I've got some snake oil for you. It's real cheap, only $100 an ounce, and it will make you less of a faggot.

To be fair, industrialization cuts down the population. Most of the population is concentrated in cities and third world countries. Which is good for the environment.

More like a nightmare.
That' SEVEN percent of the total population.
Think about that.
That means for every 14 people you interact with, there would be one.
That means there's not enough people to run competing businesses.
People like to pretend like the world population was 500 million just a few centuries ago, but the truth is we have no idea how populated MOST of the planet was until the last 100-150 years.
Realistically, the world hasn't had that small a population since the days of Columbus, where literally HALF THE WORLD was undiscovered.
So, considering we have so much more land to be dispersed in, itd be comparable to the population distribution of the early crusades.
That was horrible.

and, like other anons have said, it IS slowing down.
And we're becoming more and more efficient at using resources, and replacing resources.

Honestly, the next 50 years will be far better for it than the last 50 years as far as resources.

I've seen some scientists basically say that 12 billion is our tipping point, but it's always hard to tell since the increase causes more urgency and that causes the development of resource-extending technology.

The /out/doors will be there long after we're all gone, don't worry.

i've just begun my first attempt at brewing mead, and while stirring the yeast i realised something, by the time the stuff is ready, it has been there for like millenia for the yeast, and it's at the point that the yeast has used all the sugar in the jar, all of the resources in their tiny jar world, that i will filter the stuff, killing all the yeast and have a drink. how fucking scary is that, what if we're just yeasts in some gigantic jar just spending time making that delicious co2 and water from the oil in the ground and the plants around us, and there is some gigantic thing waiting out there until we've used all of our resources and this universe is ready to drink
>>
>>720101
Well that'll be at least a few billion years from now and I'm sure humans won't last that long so we don't have to worry about it.
>>
>>720107
but what if we ARE the yeast? what if our piss is the alcohol that makes the universe such a delightful drink?
>>
>>720110
Well then we'll have to make some huge advances in terraforming, FTL travel, and population growth before we start affecting anything other than our own little planet. It'll be hundreds or thousands of years at least before humans will even colonize a planet outside of our own little solar system (if ever), and eons to colonize a significant part of our little galaxy.
>>
>>720122
have you ever opened a little packet of bread yeast? all kinds of little grains that each contain milions of bacteria, what if they are the planets? and every planet in the universe is a little grain
>>
>>720125
If that's true, in a metaphorical sense, then we'll never know, nor will we have any way of possibly figuring that out. Even if we did figure out that something like that was true, we're so tiny and insignificant that the knowledge would do us absolutely no good.
>>
>>720101
They all die from the alcohol before you filter it.
