My awesome snow/sand stakes, pic related!

Used on 12'x12' Kelty Noah's tarp for max holding poiwer in wind.

But for my freestanding dome tents I tend to trade up to Ti shepard hooks.

MSR Cyclone for load bearing points.

But we get a lot of wind at high elevation. When I camp lower I just use whatever because I don't need that much holding power, and cyclones are 9" stakes.

Typically pine or cedar. Weighs nothing (because you're not carrying around extra metal like a retard), and I've yet to find anything at a lower price than free.

The outdoor experience doesn't come from a retailer, anon.

I am happy to pay the $6 to cover off the 4 main wind bearing stakeouts on my tent, so as to ensure it doesn't blow away.

Maybe $6 is a bridge too far for you, but we get 70 MPH sustained winds here.

Not Rockies, but Swiss Alps, I use HB and MSR Y-pegs, they do work even in rocky soil. However, they fuckers are expensive, so I usually buy a 12 pack when it is on sale somewhere.
>>
>>706849
I have like 30 of these that I always have with me. They're great, not worth anything if you lose them, you can use them to take things off the fire, make a platform over the fire for your billy, all kinds of great stuff.

Plastic works, but can spell problems in highly packed soil if they break off.

Stakes that get the best strength for you buck are going to be made of aircraft grade aluminum/titanium and have some sort of geometry to them. My backpacking tent is a Rock 22 and the steel stakes were replaced with MSR Ground Hogs and 4 aluminum cheap stakes. Saved at least half a pound of weight.
>>
Aluminum hook stakes. They are about $1 at any store so I don't care if they break or get lost. I carry about 20 and they are all less than a lb combined.
>>
Go to like, home depot or whatever and just get some of those 8 inch x 1/4 inch nails. 4 of those fucker will cost you a couple bucks, and you can hammer them literally into just about any camping surface except maybe solid rock. I've had to dig them out of the ground. Tenat aint goin' nowhere. And they'll either break or go around little stones in the ground without getting bent to shit like the lame walmart tent aluminum coat hangar.

Some of my stakes. From left:
>Ruta Locura 9" Sorex stakes: 7 grams
>Generic Aluminum 9" skewer: 28 grams
>Tentipi Steel Peg 23: 120 grams (!)
>Easton 9" Nano Aluminum Tubular stake: 13 grams
>Clamcleats Spear titanium stake: 18 grams
>Clamcleats Alloy Y-stake: 12 grams
>Tentipi Lightweight [sic!] Aluminum stake: 18 grams
>Hilleberg Aluminum Y-stake: 13 grams
>Vargo Titanium skewer: 9 grams
>Toaks Titanium V-stake: 12 grams
>FAAAAAAKE Ebay "Toaks "Titanium" V-stake" (really aluminum): 12 grams (bends in brisk breeze)
>DAC/Hilleberg Aluminum V-stake: 12 grams
>Toaks Titanium 6.5" skewer: 6 grams
>MSR Carbon Core stake: 5.5 grams
>Terra Nova Skewer: 1 gram

Usually bring 6 RL Sorex stakes, 4 MSR Carbon Cores and 4 Vargo Titanium skewers for the tarp in generic woody/hilly terrain.. Bring 4 extra Clamcleat Spear if Mountainous terrain -- just to be sure..

I like stakes, /out/. Is that bad?

This. Gutter nails are the moras of tent stakes. Ultra cheap, very strong, hold well, and very light.
>>
>>708385
Yup, they are. I'm currently waiting for 8 more of the 9" ones, and 4 of their 6" ones. They are absolutely amazing, and seem to take a bashing. Haven't ruined anyone yet, and I hammer them pretty hard into the soil with whatever I find...

Get'em here:
Zpacks make some similar ones, with a hole fore a string loop:
Also, Terra Nova make stakes in carbon, but I've only heard shit about them -- be advised (and reviwers on amazon seem to agree):

Also -- I of course do not use the 1 gram stakes for my shelter, but as pot rests for my caldera cone and to fasten the corners of my bivy to the ground. They don't hold shit -- naturally
>>
Why don't you just not put your tent up in the wind, and you wont have to carry all of that unnecessary weight that damages the ground?

Why don't you just stop it from being windy?

Sure, I've used sticks -- but if actually hiking and not just camping, designated stakes saves a lot of time. Also, above the treeline sticks aren't readily available. Finding large enough rocks may also take time and energy, and may not necessarily be in proximity to where your ideal camp is.

Bring some stakes, unless just mucking aroung the woods bushcrafring.

Also, see here for alternative solutions, illustrated by Mike Clelland!:
