I'd love to get into spearfishing. Did quite some reading and Holding breath excercises. I do scuba diving, fishing and hunting. I just love fish and the ocean but I'm from Germany where it is not allowed in any case plus I live nowhere near the ocean. Although I'm in AZ right now and looking to travel the west coast for a bit in a few weeks. I don't have any gear with me though. Feels bad being so close yet so far aswell.

If you are familiar with the water, and feel comfortable, then you should have no problem becoming assimilated. However, if it's something you just want to 'try-out' for a few days, it's not worth it. Spearfishing is a dedication. You should be fit enough to dive 10+meters, hold your breath for over a minute, go against the current, et cetera...depending on location, of course. Gear is fairly expensive. $40 minimum for decent mask, $15 for snorkel, $250+ for a speargun, $100 for fins.There's always cheap stuff on Craigslist. What do you have in mind?
