I'm a Kansas native, 19, and gonna be staying in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico for camping/hiking/fishing.

Does anyone regularly carry on them when hiking/camping?

Well you should carry something bigger than a Makarov thats for sure.

Get a rifle m8

Canadian here. I carry a rifle while /out/ since you never know what animals or weirdos you'll run into
>>

Please let this be bait.

Also, Maks are fine anyway. It wouldn't be my first choice for bears, but it works good on skinwalkers and dogs.

Is this thread for me?

I live in Arizona and typically carry my makarov (yes I know pic is a walther) in a low profile hip holster. I forget the brand but its really slim and i barely notice its there.

Makarov is more than okay for the majority of animals or people that might do you harm. Unless you're up north arizona dont have much in the way of large predators.

Colorados a different story, though you should still be fine with even a full sized .40.

Rifles are mighty fine if you are in the middle of nowhere, but are unnecessary otherwise and will weird people who aren't gun folk out.
>>
>>701515
Coloradoan here, 9 is fine, not much need for a .40 or .45. If you are bringing a pistol and expecting bears go 10mm or a rifle.
>>
>>701485
>Makarov
>looks like a Walther
>says WALTHER

Never seen James Bond I guess, which is fine but kind of funny.

>>701468
I carry my Grandad's old .22 revolver sometimes. Really more for squirrel or rabbit to add to the stew. Legally of course...
>>
>>701468
When I'm not on provincial/national parks, I take a 12 gauge with a 14 inch barrel with me.

The plan is to eventually get a .375 H&H with express sights.
>>
AZ, everyday.
>>
A light and short (18" barrel) 12 gauge single shot everywhere legal

Mainly for small game with birdshot so I've got something to clean and eat over the campfire that I didn't bring with me

Though, I keep some slugs in the ammo carrier just in case for defense
>>
>>701468
Nope, never. Once you go deep enough innawoods, there aren't any people and the animals are afraid of you.

The only dangerous thing about camping is the drunk in the next campsite playing with his handgun.
>>
I usually bring my zastava. More for plinking or drug farmers than animals in South Dakota.
>>
>>701468

I carry a glock 19....it's my every day carry, so it's just natural to have it with me. For animals I bring my mossberg 590a1, loaded with slugs and a few hand fulls of other loads.
>>
>>702490

Let me reword that.

It's loaded with slugs, I also bring along a few hand fulls of dif type loads.

I only take a pocketknife or maybe a walking stick. Might start plinking carry

Also MT here. I carry a sidearm for the sheer joy of it, unless I'm on a trail close to town where I'm going to get weird looks.

Rifle if I'm heading out for a couple days into a wilderness area or something, which to be honest is probably a once a year thing for me, if that.

Depending on the area of the country, I'd be more worried about water moccasins over rattle snakes. Was sitting near a small lake once in my Jeep when a moccasin came out of the water and struck my Jeep unprovoked. The fuckers have no fear.

Guns are a fucking trend, toys for manchildren, cucks, and pussies. Your odds of ever need one are nil, the rest of a time is a liability because most gun owners never learn proper safe use.
>>

This. Once you're miles from the road, your odds of seeing anyone drops to about zero. And most people /out/ are friendly, paranoid fucks with guns ruin the experience.

>>702853
If a cougar was sprinting at you, your handgun wouldn't do shit. You're not a crack shot, you'd get fucking eaten.

As for bears, bear spray would fuck a bear far more than a handgun. Shoot it in the head and you're in business, anywhere else and you've just made it mad.

>>
>>703215
> If a cougar was sprinting at you, your handgun wouldn't do shit.

Sure it would, it'd give you a chance. Which is more than you have when you're packing nothing at all.

Most animals won't attack you, true, but then neither will most people and yet we still feel the need to write laws, etc.. Take your tripe elsewhere and stop trying to justify your state's shitty laws by pretending that a person will never need a gun.

I've occasionally wished I had a gun while camping, but mostly to have a backup plan against the mentally-ill people with guns you occasionally meet out in the wilderness.

My boss said that any handgun powerful enough to reliably stop an angry bear would be too much of a pain in the ass to carry on a hike. From what I've seen, it seems pretty accurate.

Also, keep in mind that carrying on nationally-protected lands is typically illegal.

I carry a handgun not for bears, wolves, coyotes, or hogs. I carry because of idiots in this thread that think these wild animals are such a big threat. An armed idiot that honestly is afraid of these wild animals is 100x more dangerous with their imagination than any wild animal. I've seen faggots in this thread literally go defcom 6 at the sound of a twig falling from a tree.

>That's a bear oh shit lemme grab my gun and fire warning shots
Meanwhile it was just the wind blowing a twig off a tree.

Carry all day so I don't see the point in stopping when I'm /out/.

Usually my Hi-Power. Am looking at getting a wheelgun though. Either an 1873 Cattleman in .45 Colt or a used .357 smith.

I don't carry a firearm for protection against people. Most hikers in my area are treehugging hipsters. You know, those white people with dreadlocks and patchy beards. I carry because we had a pack of wolves come in our camp one time a few years ago and one bit a friend. If it wasn't for another pal carrying a Glock G17, who knows how worse it could have gone. I also have a ton of run ins with bears trying to snoop around my camp at night and firing my pistol in the air always scares them away. But you could always just bring an air horn and bear spray.

In my truck is a Browning Hi-Power, always loaded, on the trail I usually carry my 1911, Beretta 92, or S&W Model 19 357mag.

This is my trail rifle. I built it from a Upper kit I got through Sportsman Guide for $400 and then picked up a complete upper at a gun show from a friend for $200. At the same I also picked up a Leapers 4x power scope and mounts onto the rail. It's light, breaks down, and affordable to shoot.

I always carry when /out/. Not because I feel like I really need to or anything, but because I have the firearms so I might as well. A firearm is a great survival tool, and while they'll typically be one of the heavier items in your pack, the utility and security they add is well worth it in my opinion.

Nothing like being deep innawoods or innamountains with a rifle in your pack or slung over your shoulder.

You sound like you live in a city.

I agree anon. I have hiked, paddled and ridden hundreds of miles in the woods and never felt threatened of anything. That being said, I'm going backpacking in Alaska in a month and am bringing a .357
>>
I'm a gun owner and hunter, but I legitimately think bear spray is a better defensive choice than a firearm while innawoods. What the fuck are you going to do, shoot a grizzly with your .45 and expect it to stop charging?

Shooting that bear (who was probably bluffing) is just guaranteeing that you get mauled, and guaranteeing that he will decide you're a big enough threat to kill.

Bear spray on the other hand will turn any animal the fuck around pretty quick. That shit annihilates their senses. This is more effective than hitting them with whats essentially a shot of adrenaline.

When I'm out hunting with a high caliber rifle (loaded and in my hand), I STILL carry a can of spray on my hip just in case I come across a bear.

Ppl have killed full grown grizzly with a single shot with a 45. Learn to google you stupid fagget.

Carry a .357 wheelgun everday.
Somedays I carry a .44mag

>B.b..but people killed grizzlies..
Yeah, but they don't reliably do so, bear spray and other safety measures such as bells and shit are far more effective than carrying a fucking rifle around all the time
>>
>>716401
We'll see how effective a fucking bell is compared to a rifle when a bear comes at you. Fucking moron.

Different anon but,

Fucking retard

No scary animals where I go /out/, but you never know when some intelligent psychopath serial killer or group of drunken aggressive rednecks will try to kill you.
>>
>>717119
See this is what I'm saying. Again, bears around here are nancies. It's the fucking cranked out hicks you gotta worry about. Even if wold dogs and hogs are fairly common, I am way more concerned with humans that I am with the wild life.
>>
This thread makes me want a gun. Every time i go /out/ i wish i had one, then i get home and forget.

Ive never even touched a gun. What do?

Bear spray for bears. Pistol for people. Not concerned about either but better safe than sorry.

Watch some gun safety videos, make the rules an instinct and buy one. There are plenty of resources online. Just remember the gun safety rules ALL THE TIME

Is your belief evidence based? Sincere question.
>>
>>718186
Not the guy you replied to, but I've been told (Can't for the life of me remember where) that it's better to "spray them because that will blind their senses, making them scared rather than putting a .357's worth of adrenaline and pissed off in them"

Made sense to me at the time.
>>
Only for people.
>>
>>718194
This is true. Especially for those big fuck bears. Unless you are a cracks shot while under the pressure of a giant murderous beast charging madder than fuck at you, most pistol rounds will just make that bastard more madder than fuck.
>>
>>718194

This, also it sprays absolute terror from 30 feet away. Its better than a shotgun and blasting that shit towards a charging bear. You better be a calm mother fucker to drop a charging bear in one shot because that's all you'll get off before its on top of you.

Shout out from another Kansas native.

Currently in Fl. Everybody here is such a selfish asshole on a good day. I miss people striking up conversation in line at the store, or neighbors that actually cared about your family and looked out for eachother, etc...

ANYWAY - realistically you wont need to kill a bear most likely, and if one does get curious firing a 9mm into it or even into the air is going to scare the shit out of it most likely. I personally conceal carry because if I go camping in a remote area you never know what could happen so why not play it safe? literally no reason not to. Alternatively, if I am camping in a more family orientated area, like a spring or something I still conceal carry because you never know. Only thing with that is if you are going swimming or something you need to be sure you can discretely get it into your car and keep it locked up. I wouldnt trust random people to not go into my tent while I was away if they caught me printing while I was walking around or whatever.

My family always said this:
"what is the man who carries around his gun afraid of?"
"absolutely nothing"
>>
>>704524
>but mostly to have a backup plan against the mentally-ill people with guns you occasionally meet out in the wilderness

I’ve had a concealed weapon license for years and carry all the time because… why not?

That said, being in Michigan, the only dangerous critter we have to worry about is black bears and 99.9% of the time it’ll run away long before you get anywhere near it.

Dangerous humans are more of a concern, though admittedly I’ve never had anyone ever give me any kinda shit while camping or hunting but then again, never say never and if someone were aggressive towards me, I’m prepared.

Barring state laws, there is absolutely no reason not to own a gun (several in fact) and carry it wherever and whenever possible.

besides native mountain crackheads.

its the 1% of black bears that will not stop till you or it is dead. no playing dead. no black pepper spray. meal time.
>>
Canada, specifically Ontario, I carry a Mossberg 500 when I'm in Crown Land, but its because my area has lots of bears. I've only encountered a bear once and used bear spray on it. I doubt I'll actually use the shotgun but it's still fun to carry around.

.357 ain't gonna cut it in Alaska mate. You'll want a .44 mag, or even more ideally a shotun with slugs or a rifle.

A .357 might work on a brown if you are rocking full power buffalo bore loads or summat but there's no reason to have your firearm be a might work since it should be your last resort.

Training/avoidance techniques, then bear spray if possible, and if you have to shoot you want to be sure it's going down.

Kind of. I base it off of experiences I've had shooting bears while hunting.

I've lined up perfect shots where the bear was stationary and unaware that I was there. I blasted a giant fucking hole into that bears vitals with a hand loaded 30-06. That same bear ran a good 150-200 yards before it dropped dead.

Think about that scenario. I had an easy shot in a controlled situation, and the bear was still able to cover some serious ground after being hit.

Now think about the scenario where you're face to face with a charging bear. Even if you DO manage to shoot it in a lethal area, that bear will still have plenty of life in him to finish mauling your ass. He's just going to die on top of you.

Go watch bear hunting videos and form your own opinion. A sidearm isn't going to do shit in the woods.

I'll take my chances with bear spray.

You mean history books are a fucking trend -- one that ended whatever year you learned to read.
>>

I do, but it's mostly for people protection than animals. I also just enjoy shooting so I always try to get some in whenever I'm out. Aside from that, if you're going way out into nowhere, a gun is good to have for survival purposes even if you aren't carrying it on your body. If for some reason you're worried about bear attacks, it's better than nothing but I would agree with satan's disciple on this one >>721666.

Hey guys, quick question for ya...
Are a few .44 Magnum shots enough to kill anything in North America that may want to come at you? What about a few .45 shots? I'm thinking of picking up a rifle and a handgun ( both in .44 or .45 ) for defense. I'm also considering a .30 carbine for the task as well but wouldn't want to spend the extra money on rebuilding a surplus m1 or repro m1.
