/k/ here, and I was looking for an axe to take innawoods, along with my bk7.

I was checking this "viking light ax" out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpRBsqGPDB8

as well as this CRKT T-Hawk.
http://www.crkt.com/woods-chogan-thawk-axe-2730

I don't know much about these things, as I've not yet had a use for one. But I may need one soon as I'm going innawoods for several days in the spring. Are spikes useful or should I get one with a hammer as well, can't I just use the side of the axe as one?
>>
If you want to chop wood get a normal hatchet, these are not made for wood cutting.

>these are not made for wood cutting.
How do you tell?
>>
>>701186

The straight wood handle. The way history has proven what these axes and tomahawks were for.
>>
A normal camp hatchet is the best for camping and such. Cutting up firewood and as an improvised hammer for pegs and such.

Tomahawks are better weapons, but I'm pretty sure you aren't going to run into any savages; if you want a weapon, you may as well carry a pistol due to the space savings.

T Hawks shit the bed for cutting wood but they are fun as hell to throw.
>>
>>701175
Probably a fine product, but really not designed for cutting wood as others have said. Could you do it? Hell yeah. But that head shape is not as "geometrically" strong as a simple wedge, and a few over-strikes might take that beard tip off. Pretty hot lookin axe though, 10/10 would not fuck with innawoods.

As far as the CRKT Chogan, great tool, but don't expect to be felling many trees. I'd recommend it over the Viking one though. I have an older Cold Steel Pipe hawk, has held up very well after I ground the edge a little. I actually use it as a splitting wedge (or "baton" I guess) with it and it works well for that. Plus I can reach higher branches with it than just a knife.

If you find either for a good price, pick one up.
>>
Can you "throw" hatchets? Part of the reason why I'm looking at these style of axes is entertainment around the campfire.
>>
>>701936

they'll stick, yes
>>
>>701190
japs only used straight handled axes many people use them they work.

it's true the straight handle is usually a characteristic of a fighting axe, but not always.

tomahawks are multitools and auxilary weapons and can handle light woodwork.

Iono what kind of spike you're looking at, but an axe should never be used to hammer a piece of metal. You'll fuck up the axe head doing that.
>>
>>702232
>You'll fuck up the axe head doing that.
I mean by using the side of the head, or back of it.
>>
>>701184
I have used my sog hawk to chop up campfire wood and it actually does real well. The construction sucks though. I'd buy a nice one just based on my experience with this one.

Axes, no. Tomahawks, yes.

Axes (and proper hatchets) a re one of the fastest way of breaking down wood. Tomahawks are too light to do literally anything innawoods.
>>
Honestly though..how is Vikings?

Tomahawks are shit for splitting even for light splitting

The handle is straight and the head is too thin with a shallow taper
>>
>>705522
you use a different technique.
you don't split with a hawk the same way as with an axe you split like with a hatchet.
it works just fine.
>>
>>706115
wait you think the color can influence the cutting capabilities?
