Hey /out/
I'm really lost at looking for a job. I want to get into a career that lets me go to new places and go outside loads, but I simply have no ideas.
Any ideas?

Seconding OP. What are some jobs (non-military) where I can travel to remote places I would probably never go to otherwise? Like places in arctic northeastern Canada, for example.
>>
Fish and Wildlife Technician, Forester, outdoor rec jobs like guiding, Search and Rescue, Sasquatch hunter, Archaeologist, Gold Digging?

My dad worked for my state's Dept of Fish and Game. Pretty much got paid to go fishing. Not much, mind you - he was dirt poor. Made shit money. Also spent half his paycheck on beer and cigs every month.

But the opportunity to get a public pension is not one you should pass up.

Geologist.

I work in outback Australia, 2 weeks away from home mapping at a time then 2 weeks home.

My boss whose is infinitely more experienced has spent time in Indonesia, Central Asia, the Atacama and East Africa.

What sector? Mining?

I had a few mates who after our geology degree went over to Aus for mining jobs. They came back after a few months say everything had fallen out.

How are things at the minute?

Why is this almost always the case?

Exploration.

It is really tough at the moment, I got a job through networking and I basically keep it because I'm getting paid relatively little (50k AUD)

But I do get to spend 2 weeks a month living a hotel with a pool, having all meals paid for and spending my days hiking.

That's great man.

Myself and alot of my mates had that in mind going into geology. Most just ended back home (UK) and finding work in geotechnical jobs, after having to fork out for a engineering geology masters.

Do you have a M.S or B.S.?

B.S

I'm not very academically inclined
>>

That gives me hope, currently going for a b.s. in geology and hope to enter the workforce. What types of classes did you find most useful for exploration geology?

Definitely learn GIS and Remote Sensing/Image Processing. It sucks sometimes but I'm only in my position now because I had GIS skills and I was willing to put up with around 6 months of straight data entry.

Other than that, do as much field work as you can and start emailing companies well before you graduate for work experience.

Good luck anon.

Thanks anon. My university actually offers a certificate in GIS so i have been taking a few GIS classes that satisfy my major requirements as well. Seems like the way things are going
