I have a Specialized Allez.
Should I buy these for 190 euros?
160 for the shoes.
30 for the pedals.
I've never owned or used road bike shoes and pedals before.
Are they worth their money?
Thanks.

The pedals are SHIMANO PD-R540.

While stiff soled shoes have been proven to be better for bicycles advantages of actually being attached to pedals have not been proven and are dubious. Might want to considering upgrading your bike instead.

>upgrading your bike instead

Can you be more specific?
It's an allez compact.
What component(s) should I upgrade?

Is this a troll post? Anyway, while upgrading your bike will only make you marginally faster, cycling shoes will make you much more efficient, giving you the ability to pull the cranks on the upstroke as well as push down. IMHO, well worth the money if you're putting in more than 15-20 miles at a time or just looking to be a better cyclist. You did spend for an allez anyway so it's kind of a no brainer to go clipless. Anyway, take the time to learn how to clip in and out before you go riding, it's a skill and you'll get better the more you practice.

thank for the reply
I made a new thread on /n/
I though cycling belongs in /out/, since it is more an outdoors activity/hobby than it is a way of transportation.

what the fuck is wrong with millennials? why do you even talk about something you know nothing about? Clipless pedals are as essential to high-level riding as tires are to the bike.

Just do some google searching about "clipless pedals" and you will find more than you ever needed to know about how much they increase efficiency and rider power

stay away from 4 chan at all costs when it comes to adult sports, or knowledge on expensive outdoor hobbies. This is a video game and porn website.

Clipless pedals are worth it IMO, but I use mountain bike pedals and shoes (the cleats are recessed) on all my bikes because I don't actually race and I like to be able to walk.

The only study I actually read (as opposed to internet myths and Grant Petersen ideology) found it advantageous for high torque low cadence bursts of power (like when the light turns green or you're riding up a hill and run out of low gears or the trail kicks up a bit steeper while mountain biking and you don't want to shift) but not for low torque high cadence spinning like most road racing. There are other reasons to be attached to your pedals though, like safety whilst bunnyhopping a pothole or spinning down a hill on a fixie or getting your foot in a good position to start up again in stop and go city riding.

It's a knee jerk response you always get in intenet discussions about clipless pedals. But since you asked, upgrading the wheels usually makes the most difference. Nice supple tires can make a difference too.

I don't mind bike discussions on /out/ but road bikes are more of an /n/ thing and you'll get more responses there. Some of them might even be good.
