Was out rock hounding earlier today, I need your help to identify this object. I believe it to be a rock by the sound it makes against something hard also general Rockhound thread!!!
Tooth of some kind, if it's very rocky sounding it's fossil. Where in general where you? Seems mammalian. Find it near sand stone?

looks like a fossilized tooth from an intermediate sized grazer. maybe deer or elk is the logical choice. "b-b-b-but there's no elk in illinois". eastern elk went extinct about 1880. there is said to be a small population still in northern ontario. So for the hunters out there this is why wildlife management is a good thing.
