A cool 50 degree crisp fall morning with a breeze gently blowing through an aspen grove. You can hear a fast moving creek off to your right. Birds are singing their morning song. The smell of butterscotch and vanilla from Jeffery Pines being warmed by the sun. I love this trail.

Much of the cliffside of Big Sur is privately owned, and the stuff that's decent for climbing and public is limited to bouldering or just generally flaky and dangerous to climb. Also the ocean is cold and violent, and the rock underneath is the consistency of a razor sharp cheese grater. You don't want to be fucking around on the rock at the bottom of the cliffs without a bit of caution. I lost a cousin on a fishing trip there. He turned his back to the ocean and a wave took him. They never found the body.
I recommend going inland if you want to climb Big Sur. Its no fucking joke in the interior though. The land is extremely rugged with rivers going through steep rock canyons and huge altitude changes. Expect waterfalls and good vertical walls with fun features if you follow a river long enough.
That said I love Big Sur and make an effort to go backpacking out there at least once a month. Its so cheap and the ventana wilderness is so huge and diverse there's always something to see. Very few people stray from a couple of the more popular trails(Sykes, Pine Ridge, Little Sur) so its very easy to find peace and solitude. Its also fucking gorgeous with beautiful forests and waterfalls. You could spend your whole life exploring there and see something new every time. Heres some cool shit to look at regardless.
