My favorite /out/ things are rock formations.
I will travel a great distance for a cool hike through interesting geological views.
Can we get a list going of the more interesting ones?

There are two?
Is the midwest one as cool as the Colorado one?
>>

I went to badlands last year for the first time. It was really cool, I only spent a day there though. Definitely have to get kinda far into the trail for it to get really cool. I regret not spending a day checking out the "Badlands Wilderness" area.

damn I dont know what it is about this but its really really visually appealing to me for some reason

Tent Rocks National Monument (your photo)
Goblin Valley State Park (Utah)
Needles District, Canyonlands National Park
(Utah)
Maze District, Canyonlands National Park (Utah)
Bryce Canyon Nation Park (Utah)
Moab, Utah

Just go to pretty much anywhere in southern Utah--no need to go anywhere else.

Utah probably has the most cool rock formations followed by NM and AZ then Colorado.

Good formations in Big Bend and Joshua Tree national parks as well. Big Bend has parts of two mountain ranges and lots of old vulcanism, Joshua Tree is on the fault that's going to spill California into the Pacific when our grandchildren's grandchildren have grandchildren.

Boundary Cone in Arizona as well as the surrounding area in the southern Black Mountains is gorgeous. Had some field work out there last summer and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Glad to know there's some other geophiles on /out/

Former Conservation Worker here, southern Utah is THE PLACE YOU WANT TO BE.

Bryce Canyon NP, deserves several days alone. If suggest early morning or dusk walks amongst the Hoodoos.

Capital Reef national monument doesn't get enough love, and NF land to its east have some of the most beautiful mesas I've ever seen.

St. George alone has Snow Canyon State Park, Red Cliffs Conservation area in addition to Zion. Look up a store called. The Desert Rat, they'd be happy to give out pointers.

If southern Utah is out of range, then get to Dinosaur National Monument, especially echo point and flaming gorge.

Sorry, Capital Reef NF land is West, but traveling east gets you some interesting views as well.

Better off visiting the many badlands in the Wouthwest.
I haven't been to Badlands NP but that's a long way to go to see that and not much else.
The San Juan Basin in northwest corner of New Mexico has spectacular Badlands (Bisti and DeNaZin Wildernesses).
In addition, the BLM just a few years ago created four prote ted sets of badlands just west of Cuba, New Mexico in the San Juan Basin.
Then the 30 miles east between Capitol Reef National Park and Hanksville contains awesome badlands. In either of these places, you will be alone.

I've never been to the one in Colorado, but this one allows you to climb on the rocks. Granted, some dumbasses always seem to ignore common sense and end up falling.

painted hills, oregonfag speaking. if you like mountains, then coast range is gorgeous, and there are some interesting towers just off the coast, some close enough to climb on. most of the western half of the state is one massive basaltic flow from forever ago, eroded in varying degrees. theres glass butte, one of many almost entirely obsidian formations. come for the view, stay for the beer.
