So the other thread about metal detecting is garbage, so I'm making a better one. My friend owns a Bounty Hunter Time Ranger, and the other day we went out near a dry pond and an old cattle ranch.

Found a brooch with a psychedelic design on the front, a couple pennies and a quarter, part of a hydraulic ram cylinder, and a 1901-1914 era Winchester shotgun shell.

I actually searched without a metal detector, mostly for mushrooms and trash, and found a tin of air rifle pellets(still good) 4 pennies, a lapel pin with a lotus on it, and some Witches Butter fungus.

That's a nice cat I have thought about magnet fishing. Some questions about it I have.
>Do you just tie a magnet to a rope/cord?
>Do you stand on the shores/docks/piers?
>Do you use a boat/kayak/canoo?
>Do you need a magnet fishing license or magnet stamp?
>Have you ever lost a magnet?
>How big of a magnet do you use?
>Have you ever got something that was too heavy for your magnet?

OP here, I haven't actually tried magnet fishing yet, but I imagine the best places to start are fishing piers, boat launches and along bridges. You could also try along dams where fishing is popular, I'm sure you could pull up a couple spoon lures and tacklebox knives.

Today I searched a spot that may have been an old pump house or pharmacy, I'm really not sure. All that is left is some steel cables, scattered brick and a shitton on old medicine bottles, vials and test tubes all piled up in a low spot. On the hill above there are a couple of gravestones dated from the 1920's, one is in chinese characters and the other has had the marble headstone broken off by thieves :(

Found a Sanka Instant Coffee can, must be from at least the 1970's or older, will get it from my car and post a picture.

No offense is meant here but that is rubbish.
I would not pick that out of a trash can.
Is the whole hobby just collecting old garbage that should be in a landfill somewhere?
I am not getting the attraction of this activity

No offense meant but I think you really don't belong on this board is you're implying trash should be strewn about the natural landscape.

Went /out/ today, found jack-o-lantern mushrooms and many bottles in the pharmacy ruins. Will post more pics if thread takes off. Mushrooms were collected and given to hippie girl to dye wool with.

Still waiting on my friend with the detector, right now I'm just doing devining lol. On a side note, AK bayonets are decent mushroom diggers and the wire cutter tool on it works well, snipped barbed wire in one attempt.

Not OP. Got a report from the hippie girl about the dying process. The skein on the right is a chemically treated cotton (I think) and the skein on the left is plain wool (sold to me with the comment "it's basically straight off the sheep"). 2+ pounds of fresh mushrooms went into the dye bath along with an alum mordant. Even with a shitload of mushrooms the dye bath could have been stronger.

The mushrooms are Western Jack O'Lanterns (Omphalotus olivascens). Fresh mushrooms' gills glow bioluminescent blue-green in the dark. They are poisonous to eat and will make you puke violently and feel awful. More pics forthcoming.
