Also have a Aussie Shepard that we think has some collie in 'im. Great dog, but stubborn sometimes. Always loved being /out/, now that he only has 3 legs and is ~14 years old it's getting harder for him though.

I've had a springer for years and I agree, they're excellent dogs. A bit tough to train but once you get past that they're incredibly obedient. I did have an even better dog though, from a labrador/springer breeder. He mixed both of his best dogs of each breed and we got one of the puppies. One of the most amazing dogs I've ever had the privilege to own. Did a great job at both flushing and retrieving, not scared of gun fire, loyal to the core, compact and agile. Looked like an all black 3/4 sized lab with the head of a springer (less blocky, bright green eyes).
I really want a malinois now but not sure how good they are with hiking in rocky areas.. I'm not sure they're very sturdy.

My border collie is wonderful. She loves going out with me. As soon as I put my boots on she gets so excited. She's very smart, it only takes a few repetitions for her to learn something. Also they're only about 35 lb. Not too small, not too big.

For about 6 months in the town I live in, there was an outdoor/tactical equipment store. You NEED to have something for them to do. We have around 25 sheep and our border collie absolutely loves herding them when we take them out to the fields to graze. If they get bored, which they will, they will find jobs of their own and start excavating a side of your house or herding kids and other dogs.
They need a lot of love and attention, they can get depressed if you don't treat them with praise and respect.

I'm glad there's some love for Springer spaniels in this thread.
My grandad (had other dogs before I was born) had two Springer spaniels, which he used to take out shooting with him and to work every day (forestry).
Couldn't ask for more loyal, and fun dogs. When I was a teenager I used to walk them in the forest my grandparents used to stay. Would explore the woods with them for hours.

They are difficult to train in the idea that they will try very hard to find ways around your rules, like a smart-ass kid. Let's say you are training him to not chase the chickens. Well, then he finds other ways to rile them up like barking at them. Train him not to bark at the chickens, then he is jumping next to them to get a rise out of them. Train him out of that, and now he is doing something ridiculous like pushing logs into the pen to scare them. They also have a tendency to pick up on small cues we don't recognize, and may associate that with a command. For example, let's say your dog barks on command to "speak", but when you say speak, you also twitch your hand. Now the dog barks at every hand twitch thinking it will get a treat.
Not all Border Collies will display that behavior and that behavior isn't unique to Border Collies, but it is very common due to their intelligence.

On average, animal shelters receive less than 1% of animals from court cases, which would include beating, dog fighting, neglect, fucking, etc.
If you are trying to say people get shelter animals for that reason, it doesn't happen often because 1) animal shelters have lists of people to not adopt out to and 2) Craigslist is a lot cheaper for an animal you are just going to use and toss

they're hard to come-by. it's hard enough to find groves of them, but a larger forest-sized stand is even rarer. there are at least groves in NH/Maine, Alaska, and Eastern and Northern Yurôp. they do well at the edge of the woods or as groups of saplings in a clearing or field, but as the rest of the forest grows-in around them they tend to die. they just aren't as robust and don't compete with other species well. I would love to find an old-ass/old growth stand of white birches.
the birches in my woods are all fairly young and probably about one dies per year (disease, uprooting in a storm, etc)

Can confirm, I have a 3 yo golden lab, we can be out all weekend, get back at 6 on a sunday and by the time ive cooked and eaten hes looking at me like its time to head back out.
Only downside is they love water, and look at you like your a bastard when you leave them in the porch of your tent instead off letting their sodden self snuggle up with you in the tent.
Also lab retardedness is a thing, i have to be careful because mine would actually jump into a gushing swollen river, or chase a stick over a cliff if I wasnt paying attention to where i was throwing it.
