I am a knife maker and I'm curious about what some people would be looking to hold for hours at a time.
Weight, shape (bowie, fighter, tanto), accents (paracord, serrated edge, etc), handle (wood, paracord, leather)

Current knife made out of a leaf spring to basically make a hatchet disguised as a knife (its like 3/8Th thick). Haven't put the grind on it yet but you can imagine. Notice the boob-level comfort grip.

Doug Ritter is a survival expert, very highly regarded. His site has a section on buying the right knife. He's worked with Ethan Becker, Benchmade, and others.
Other than that, just make what you like and build your craftsmanship.

Ummm everything you could use your taticool knives for? And actually is better at skinning animal hide then your regular pointy knives. Plus since the spine is flat too. Perfect for scraping fat. Cuts rope just fine and is an excellent box opener.
Only thing I say its not really good for is cutting up fish. But besides a fillet knife what is?

It's a classic design for a sailor's knife. You could do your rigging on an unstable deck without stabbing yourself. It's also a strong design if you need to baton it, which is something that sailors sometimes did to get through heavy hemp rope.

Yeah, the handle always looks clumpy and the sheath looks shit. I just seal up leather and use rubber tape to make a watertight area at the base of the blade.

These are three of mine and one of my wife's. The Ahti is the best quality, the PSK is probably the best "survival knife" of the lot, the Old Timer Woodsman is an excellent skinner, and my wife's Case is a good all-around knife. Please note they've all seen actual use innawoods and aren't display and/or sheath babbies like most of the knives you see here. I've owned that PSK since the 1980s. Bought it at the PX at Reese AFB when my Army regular uncle was in town and I was in high school.
