Bought a regular President a couple months ago on reccommendations from the internet. Can't complain so far, but it is a slightly larger "medium" weight one while this is a "medium/light".
So let's make a thread where we post our tackle and forget how much money we wasted. Also mention what kind of fishing you do mostly. Largemouth, peacocks, and sometimes snakeheads for me. Whatever is biting the Mepps.

I own a Stella. And I bought it an NRX rod to go on.
That and several Stradics so I am confirmed Shimano shill. Honestly, the Stella is nice but not even close to worth the money over a Stradic. NRX is pretty damn amazing though.
I like powerpro and it is pretty much all I fish with. I do mostly salmonoids here in AK we have tons. Steelhead and Kings mostly but I will slum Sockeye here and there. Lingcod and Halibut when I can get a ride on someone else's boat since I don't really have the gear for them yet.

I have been debating grabbing another Shimano reel. A few years back, I grabbed a Sienna ultralite reel. All the reviews had it as their best reel for under $50. It's nice. I almost grabbed a Sedona or whatever their next tier reel is when I bought that first Pflueger President.
My only problem with the Sienna is the ultralite reel is really small. Especially the spool for the line. I wouldn't want to run anything more than 2lb mono and that is too small for bass fishing. I used 10lb Power Pro (2lb diameter lol) and I would be suprised if I even got 75yds on there total. A long cast and I'm getting close to the mono backing.
Pic related is my current collection. The white reel is an Okuma I impulse bought for $30 at Dick's on Black Friday. Normally $60 or $70. And then I needed a rod at midnight and grabbed that Berkley Lightning Rod (Shock made for braid) from Walmart for $40 and I like it a lot. Bass Pro had them for $50 today and I almost bought another for this new reel when I was there today. But I wanted to try the Abu Garcia. Funny how they have tons of rods for $30-$50, and a bunch for $150-$200 but not much in between.

Anyway, the tackle I use most is my panfish setup, which is a Shakespeare Prius light action 5'0 two piece rod with a Mitchell Avocet II G2000 reel with (I think) 8lb test. It was my first "real" fishing setup and I've had it for as long as I can remember. It's caught many tasty dinners in its time. The rod is the perfect size for leaving in the car all open water season.
I wish it would get colder here, I'm itching for some ice fishing. Fucking El Nino or whatever's going on.

where im from (australia) those 'Mepps' lures are just called spinners. and i fucking love them. I've caught everything from saltwater pelagics such as Trevally, queenfish and permit, to bream and flathead, to many freshwater fish such as Australian Bass, catfish, tarpon ect. they really are exceptional lures.
ok now my gear (pic related).
The top setup is a Gold Penn 850ss real on a heavy (8-10kg i think) Silstar crystal power tip rod. Pretty good setup for price (roughly $180), never had a problem with any of it.
The middle setup is a Shimano Stradic 5000 real on a Shakespeare Ugly Stik rod. Would recommend/10. I have pretty much abused the rod for over 10 years of fishing and it has never failed me. And real is also really good, very smooth handle and drag even after owning it for a while.
The bottom is my newest rod, which i also broke on its first trip /out/ 2 weeks ago. It is a Shimano Sahara rod, which broke in two without much pressure nor did i high end the rod. It was pretty shit desu.
I also recently bought a South Pacific fly fishing combo which i plan to try over the summer (never fly fished before)
I also have some other tackle/gear, but those two are what i mainly use.
I have the same quantum xr-2 reel as i started with, im 24 and it was my dadsfor a couple years until he upgraded and passed this one down to me. Using it on a cheap ugly stick 7' medium light action from canadian tire. I also have my dads old fly rod and reel which i have no clue the make or price he paid for it
I fish small lakes and rivers so i dont need anything too fancy, the only thing that i will dish out the extra money and get top quality for is line, and the odd fancy lure, but i mostly use cheap spinners and self tied flies

I did the Super Slick on my baitcast (Abu Silver Max) and then ended up going to a slightly lighter regular Power Pro. The lighter line casts better because it is lighter, but I never noticed the Super Slick being much better. Maybe next time I spool a reel I will go with that.
I have Spider Wire Stealth Braid on a couple reels, and I'm starting to like that a little more than the Power Pro. But then everybody says Power Pro is better. So I don't know what to believe- my own experiences or everybody else's word.

I need to figure out a better way to organize my crankbaits. I might grab a smaller tackle bag in the future and split up my tackle. As you can see in the pic, those crank baits can be a pain in the ass to un tangle when I want to grab one.
I have one small box like in your pic that has 7 or 8 slots in it if I just want to throw a couple lures in there. But I normally just carry my whole bag.
I bought my little bro a backpack made by Browning that is made to carry 4 or 5 plastic tackle boxes. They sell them at Bass Pro for like $70. Neat idea but it would be too small for me. The regular bags with the shoulder strap are easy enough to carry.

Most of my baits are distributed into multiple boxes, doing my best to organize by the depth they run, their size, and the lure type (float, suspend, sink, popper, crankbait, lipless crank, etc). At the moment everything fits into one really large Plano 4674. I came across this article ( http://www.indepthangler.com.au/review/review-plano-4674-ultimage-gear-bag/ ) and basically copied what they'd done. All those slim 3600's makes for a lot of options when organizing.
The bag itself is a little cumbersome and I mostly use it as a "boat bag." It has a shoulder strap and hand-holds on the side pockets but if you load it the way I have it puts on weight very fast. If I'm not using a boat I usually pull lures from the bag that I think will work best and put them into smaller tackle boxes that fit well in the pockets of waders, vests, cargo/ACU/BDU style pants.
I'll try to remember to snap some pictures of my setup after work tomorrow.

Damn, that one is huge. Mine fits 5 of those bigger boxes (14"x9"). I think 3600 is the medium size, right? I was debating getting a smaller bag with 2 or 3 of those medium (3600s?) in it to use for when I'm walking around lakes a lot. That way I can at least split some stuff up and don't have it so crowded. It's just a pain when I want one crank bait and it is tangled with 6 other ones.
They make those spinnerbair organizers, but there isn't really anything for crank baits like that. If I got a bunch of flat boxes with one slot for each Rapala, it would take up at least 3 or 4 boxes. Spinners would be like 5-6 boxes if I only had one in each slot.
I have 5 of those 14" x 9" boxes in my bag, plus one more with bigger terminal tackle if I do saltwater. The 5 are organized by:

I bojangled and didn't get around to taking pictures today. If your pack fits five of the larger (3700) packs it may work the same way with the slim 3600s (mediums). My pack came with six 3700s, five inside and one on the lid (due to a design change - pic related). The Hydro Flo design is nice but they've gotten to nearly double the price of what I paid ($55ish USD) at the time. If I ever needed a replacement I probably wouldn't buy another at the current price. They do make the same bag (in all three sizes) without the draining base which currently sells for close to what I paid for the Hydro Flo back then.

I never have luck with poppers or topwater stuff. Closest I got was a couple weeks ago when I was at one of my little ponds at sunrise. I was actually getting fish jumping at the poppers but not biting hard enough to hook them. Also I think I was trying to set the hook when I saw the strike instead of feeling it. Same goes for topwater frogs and buzz baits. Never any good bites.
Also if I'm fishing after it gets dark and just going for largemouth and peacocks, is there any lure or color that would be best? I just try to use whatever rattles and spins.

In shallows they are great.
Pike feed in such a manner that they are facing banks and shallows, striking on nearly anything that wanders to deeper water from a bank. If you can retrieve to mimick this in shallow water it works really well. Froggy colors and small mouse poppers work well.

Those bags look nice. It's like an upgraded model of my old Plano bag. I need to see one IRL tho. Does that one have a thicker rubber base on mine? That is the one thing I'm suprised about with this bag. The bottom seems like thin rubber/plastic and I have no idea how it hasn't gotten ripped up from sitting on rocks or asphalt.
I mentioned it earlier tho, I don't really like how some of these newer bags that hold 4-5 3700 boxes seem way larger than mine because of padding and pockets that stick out real far. This bag holds a suprising amount of shit for its physical size. I have bug spray, a flashlight, first aid kit, pliers, and some small Gulp jars in that front pocket. A couple spools of line in one side pockets with lots of extra room, and the other side pocket has other random stuff like rigs and a tiny tackle box.

I also like how it has that little plastic pouch. This pic shows Power Bait in it. I had to take a Dremel to a 3700 box and cut out the dividers so Power Bait bags would fit better in there.
The little elastic straps on the lid are nice too. I actually have a 6th 3700 box with larger terminal tackle and leaders and stuff, and I will lay it on top of the bag while I carry the bag with the shoulder strap or two handles. Not quite as secure.
Looking at more pics tho, I really don't like that huge plastic base. It looks like the bag ends up being 3" taller than it needs to be. When walking around a lake with 3 rods and a packed tackle bag, the less extra BS there is to the bag, the better.

Pic related is the end result of a couple 3700s and a Dremel. I would never want to put bags of Gulp in a pocket in the bag. I let my little brother borrow that box with the saltwater Gulp and he didn't seal the bags. A bunch of that juice got all over the inside of the box. Smelled awful and was so hard to clean off because it is def some type of oil.
Great way to customize the boxes for larger stuff. I'm thinking about working on my spinner box so I can lay them flat instead of having to bend them.

Spoons are excellent for pike and walleye. I've also caught many trout on small spoons, but I prefer fly fishing for trout so I don't use them much these days.
My favorite pattern is a 5 of diamonds and the Red Devil pattern is close behind. It's a legendary lure. If I could only have one lure in my freshwater tackle box, a medium sized 5 of Diamonds would be it.

I've also used spoons on downriggers for good effect for lake trout and on the coast (Kitimat/Prince Rupert) for salmon. For salmon I prefer anchovie rigs or hoochies, but spoons work ok.

Ehh, it's packed so it is hard. There's bags of Power Bait buried under other bags in each slot. I have to make sure there is no air in the bags if I want to close it.

They all get stuck on eachother and it can be a pain to untangle them. But I don't know of a good way to keep them from getting tangled besides spreading them out into 3 or 4 3700 boxes and that isn't an option.

Anybody know anything about pic related? It is one of the best crankbaits I have ever used. They are smaller, but will catch blugill, crappie, and bass way faster than a similar Rapala.
I bought them years ago at some fishing show. I remember buying some Berkley Frenzy crankbaits at the same time. I can't remember the last time I saw those Frenzy lures. I thought about something like the cork, but idk how well that would work with them all in the tackle box. Maybe something like that for Mepps and spinners, but those aren't nearly as hard to untangle. I had some tiny rubber bands laying around and I'm in the process of wrapping em now.
The way in the video doesn't work with the fat crank baits, so I just put the rubber band around the back hook and wrapped it around the lip. It holds the middle hook down as well.

I finally got my little brother into fishing towards the end of last summer. We had a good couple weeks, then he went back to school. He is home on winter break right now though. I'm going to try and hit up the ponds and lakes with him before he goes up to Chicago for a week or two to see friends. Then after that he will be back at school and I will be solo again.

I'm old school. Love my black (I have 2) and red Ambassadeur reels that are like 30 or 40 years old. Cast reasonably well, will land a whale on 20lb test. I spool them with 40lb spiderwire for catfishing. I use 20lb mono leaders. I drop the leaders for bass fishing with lures. That's pretty much all I do. So the first time we went out I grabbed some nightcrawlers but we mostly used lures. If I do nightcrawlers, I throw one out with a bobber and cast with lures, but I don't have shit for luck with live worns around here for some reason. Anyway he got a nice ~15" largemouth the first time I ever took him. I think he was just using a beetle spin and a white PowerBait grub.
I got him a handful of lures for Christmas (in addition to the tackle backpack I bought him as an early present) and I would probably grab him a nice rod, but I want to see if he ends up fishing more freshwater or saltwater. I live 5min from the Atlantic and a big fishing pier, but normally fish freshwater because I lived in Illinois for 23 years before moving here and know freshwater and bass fishing better. But when he is at school, he does a little saltwater with his friends there but I don't think he has had any luck the few times he went.
If he keeps up with it, maybe I will get him a nice rod and reel for his birthday. I already gave him 3 of mine that I didn't use much and put fresh Power Pro on all of them. A heavy spinning rod, some $50 combo from Bass Pro and that has 40lb braid, then a medium Mitchell combo with 20lb, and a lighter Shakespeare with 10lb. He can learn with those and fuck them up for a couple months. At least the braid saves him the frustration of losing a ton of lures.

I like Abu Garcia stuff. I almost bought the Revo S instead of that President in the OP. But they didn't really have the size I was looking for. Next combo I buy, I think I'm going to keep an eye out for a good deal on a Revo.
I like their Cardinal spinning reels, even being cheaper. That graphite and gold Cardinal (SX?) reel I have is really nice for an $80 combo. And I have a Silver Max baitcaster too. But I can't really judge that since it was my first baitcaster and I don't use it a ton. No problems after a year or two of limited use. I need to practice with it more though. I don't feel like I have the same control as a spinning reel. Plus it isn't really worth using when I'm catching 2-3lb bass.
That Abu Vendetta rod I bought doesn't seem too bad so far. I just wish it was 6' instead of 6'6". It's hard to find 6' spinning rods with fast action tho and I wanted to try something a little nicer than an Ugly Stik.

That Shakespeare ultralite is probably the worst of the 3 combos. The reel isn't bad, but the rod is cheap. The Mitchell (medium) is a few years old, but is a decent combo. And that $50 Zebco catfish/saltwater rod is almost brand new.
I was at Dick's on Black Friday, and they had these Skeet Reese combos on sale for $50 off of $100. I was in the checkout line with one for him, then looked at some reviews online that said the rod is amazing but the reel is shit. Then I looked at the reel some more and put it back. The rod was really nice, but the reel had a plastic body and was just garbage.

40lb spiderwire, it's the same diameter as the lower end of the mono size recommended for those reels. I use Berkley Cherrywood 6' Medium-Heavy action rods.
And I remembered wrong, it's two red and one black. They're popular with the catfishing crowd because they are good for cranking in the occasional lunker. Catfish don't really fight like bass or pike or whatever, but they weigh a hell of a lot more. Best I've done on a rod and reel was a blue about 25 lbs. on live perch near the bottom in the dead of winter in the middle of the night. The lakes I fish have records of 45 to 80 lbs.

I use the spiderwire because it's tough and doesn't get messed up on the rocky bottoms around here. I use 40 lb test because the diameter matches the manufacturer recommendations for both the rod and reel. I use 15 to 20 lb mono leaders on Carolina or 3-way rigs for catfish.
And cats aren't line shy, I think you could catch even 2-3 lb fish on 50 lb mono. They just don't care.

25 lbs of blue cat bent a medium-heavy rod way the hell over when I started pulling back. On the rare occasion that I chase bass I do it using spinning tackle or my Pflueger low-profile baitcaster. I have a Zebco 11 triggerspin on a 5' telescoping rod that goes in my backpack. Spincast reels don't make tangles with my gear, and it's plenty for panfish or using clear floats with flies for trout.

I've actually not seen the design from the article for sale anywhere. The write-up got my attention but when I searched for them it seems that they redesigned (pic related) at some point. It's as heavy as it is convenient. If I could recommend anything it would be to try to find one in store to make sure you want it. Try to picture it with all the added weight if you plan on loading twelve slim 3600s in it.

If you can find one, about a quarter of the Hydro Flo model's height is the draining base. They've gotten scarce. The regular "Guide Series" bags just feature a sort of thick, moulded, waterproof bottom but don't stand quite as high as a result.

A valid concern. The side pockets have built in hand-holds and are shaped to hold things like sunglasses but they do stick out a bit compared the the rest of the pack as a result.

That was kept through the redesign and is pretty nice. I will say that in the rain or if the lid gets sufficiently soaked water will eventually make its way into that pouch. Use zip-locks if you're gonna stick non-waterproof maps or the sort in there.

I was impressed enough to purchase a second one.. They trump my finicky Black Max by far, and noticeably outperform my Pro Max.
I bought the first one along with an 7' M/F Veritas 2.0 with the intention of producing a topwater baitcasting setup for lures that were a bit too big for my light-spinning gear. Not thinking I lined it with fluorocarbon and promptly found out sinking line and surface lures don't exactly work together. It did however make for an awesome jerkbait combo, and I found out enough to about the rod's action to know I'd like another for poppers and spooks. So I duplicated the setup and lined up with some mono that time around. Like a charm.
The centrifugal brake is something to consider. I find it works beautifully but it isn't as quick to adjust as the magnetic brakes are on the Max reels. It's not a long process (open the side-cover, adjust switches as necessary, close the cover) but if you're fishing tournaments or the sort you'll probably only be using it for one or two techniques to avoid spending time adjusting every time you switch lure types. If you're fishing casually or don't mind the extra steps in adjusting the brake I think you'll be very pleased with one.

Whoops, overlooked this post. The SX has a magnetic drag and adjusts like the Max series making that last bit above a non-issue. I can't overstate how impressed I've been with the Revo line. Enough so I ended up talking myself into getting the Winch and pairing it with a big 7'11" cranking rod for deep divers. A big purchase for me considering I used to mostly fish freshwater with strictly light-to-medium spinning gear so coughing up more than $75 for a reel always seemed crazy to me (still does but with the baitcasters it's like I can feel more of the improvement that I'm getting).

The arrival date seemed kinda late. The place might be dragging ass because of the holidays. Estimated delivery was like late next week.
But I have a couple questions: What line are you running on your Revo? That Silver Max was my first baitcaster, and I put PowerPro SuperSlick #40 on it and it was too much. I think I have #30 on there now. But I'm thinking of doing #20 when I get the Revo in so I can have that casting distance and use it with Mepps #2. Plus I'm sure 20lb line will be plenty for some bass fishing, even if I have to yank through some weeds.
Also, how do you like that Veritas? Those rods look nice. That Vendetta in the OP post was the first Abu rod I ever bought and I like it so far. That RevoSX is gonna go on the Johnny Morris CarbonLite 6'6". That will be the nicest rod I own, along with the nicest reel.

I've heard this a couple times over the years. Forgot the reasoning but I've never found it to be an issue with crankbaits nor the bulk of my topwater lures spare a couple oddball lures that don't like the extra range of motion. Some topwater lures and many crankbaits (most all lipless/"Rat-L-Trap" types I believe) actually benefit from being indirectly tied and come with split rings attached to tie onto. Another alternative is a loop knot ("Lefty's Loop" or the sort).
I like a loose connection for my spooks and poppers because it makes it much easier to "walk the dog". It also produces some great erratic action when working a jerkbait with a sporadic retrieve.

This too. Just gotta remember retying is a good thing from time to time. Snaps are definitely convenient so long as you don't let them produce bad habits, something I was guilty of when I started using them. Line can fray and knots weaken. Forgetting to retie can lead to lost lures and lost fish.

I've gotten to really appreciate the low-visibility and sinking properties of fluorocarbon. My first baitcaster was a Black Max / Vengeance combo and I lined it with 14 lb Berkley Vanish for artificial worms and jigs. I use 12 lb Vanish on the one Revo S for jerkbaits & crankbaits and 12 lb Trilene XT mono on the other for topwater. The Revo Winch uses 17 lb Vanish and is paired with a 7'11" Extra Heavy Abu Veracity Winch rod for my heaviest, deepest diving crankbaits.

The Revo Winch & Veracity Winch were a pre-fishing trip splurge and far beyond what I'd typically spend. Before that the Revo S/Veritas setups were the most expensive pairings I owned at about $200 USD per pair. Putting the first one together had me nervous because I wasn't able to get hands-on with the reel before buying. When it arrived I immediately kicked myself for not ordering two. The consistency of performance between the first and second definitely helped sway me to get the Winch.
I'm positive you'll enjoy the Revo SX, and BPS' CarbonLite rods are nothing to scoff at either. I've actually heard some great things about Bass Pro's CarbonLite reels as well but I haven't picked one up to see for myself yet (I'm pretty fond of Abu Garcia if it isn't obvious).

Interesting tidbit- when I was at Bass Pro a few weeks back, I was talking to the dude who worked there for like an hour, and he said that Abu Garcia actually manufactures the BPS baitcasters. I'll take his word. Everything I read online says Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, etc is all actually manufactured in the same Asian factories as other companies. Common practice with all sorts of consumer products. And BPS sells enough rods and reels that their products are actually gaining a respectable reputation.
That CarbonLite rod has the real small guides, I'm interested in what it feels like. And the reviews for the Revo SX look great, I'm hoping it lives up. I imagine people who buy $150+ reels consistently know what they are talking about.
Oh, and the whole Flouro/Braid thing- you really need to rig up a reel with braid. I haven't touched mono in years. I have a couple spools of Vanish for leaders. I spooled an ultralight with #4 Vanish a couple years ago and I wasn't a big fan. Especially fishing from shore in shallow ponds. Plus after switching everything to braid, I can't fucking stand memory in the line. It is basically non-existent with braid. Braid seems to tie great knots too. Not so much with Flouro. I haven't found a single drawback to braid yet.
Also braid doesn't degrade with UV exposure like mono. Guy who owns my local tackle shop says he runs his Power Pro for 4 seasons. Runs it for two years, spools it the opposite direction for the last two years.
What kind of knots do you guys normally use?
I used to do Trilene knots when I was younger, but then discovered the joy of the Palomar knot. It is super easy to tie and doesn't loosen up at all like lots of the bigger, complicated ones. Plus lots of tests said it holds close to all of it's strength.
And I do the double-uni knots for leaders, keeps the knots fairly low-profile so even with a 3'-4' leader, it doesn't catch on the guides and shorten casts.

I wouldn't be too surprised. I think only a handful of Abu's Ambassadeur models still come from the factory in Svangsta. So long as the quality of the product is consistent I'm happy.

Micro Guides. Same for the Vertias rods I chose. Micro guide models tend to squeeze a few more guides along the length of the rod compared to their standard guide counterparts. I'd imagine this helps to more evenly distribute load along the rod. For some reason I want to say my micro guide models cast farther in comparison but I'm certainly overlooking a number of variables that could explain why the guides weren't the determining factor. I'll have to properly experiment with a casting plug some time.

I don't know that I could ever completely break myself of mono. Every setup I put together tends to have a set purpose and mono plays a part in a few of them. When I finally tried fluoro on a few reels it was a pretty big game changer for me but it couldn't completely replace mono. But I do hate to miss opportunity and there are techniques where mono and fluoro are both inadequate. For those the missing element is definitely braid. A dedicated hollow-body frog rod is the first thing that comes to mind, mainly for largemouth and snakehead when the aquatic plants start taking over.

I'm in South FL as of the past couple years, and I have gotten a few snakehead. Always on Mepps (Mepps shill here) and I seem to get them in the summer when it is warm. Whenever I'm fishing at my ponds with lots of weeds, I normally just try to retrieve it really fast over the weeds, but I'm probably missing some snakehead bites.
The one lake had a snakehead that has to be 30" and it likes to sit in real shallow water but get spooked as soon as I get within 20' of it. I want to catch it so I can leave it in the parking lot to bake.
I've been meaning to buy a machete to keep in my car in case I get a snakehead. Little pocket knives will only do so much with the thick skulls.

My best luck for snakehead has been on small jig spinners (Johnson Beetle Spins w/ Mr Crappie soft plastics.) A few have been caught on full-size spinnerbaits but nothing has been as productive as the little spinners. I've had plenty missed hits on topwater frogs but that's probably for the best since I was using mono at the time targeting largemouth and their teeth would've cut the line. To be honest a lot of the missed hits were most likely body-slaps in defence of their offspring. Lure placement was always prime. Right in and through the nice pockets in large patches of hydrilla and I could see the fry scatter whenever I popped the frog. I just think maybe they're not too stupid and catching on to what people are using. Hollow-body frogs are the number one hook-and-line approach to snakehead for folks around here. That being southern Maryland.

The "Northern Snakehead" we catch here in the Potomac are great eating and fun as hell to catch. The easiest way to dispatch of them is with a sharp knife or kitchen shears. Conk'em on the head to knock them out and then cut the gills and dunk'em head-down in a bucket to bleed them.

With spinning reels, I have read to leave ~1/8" of room left on the spool. I normally leave a tiny bit more so I don't end up with a huge mess. What's the rule of thumb with baitcasters?

I have a spinning reel that I catch sharks with. It's spolled with 3 different types of line. a backing, just white cotton string of about 10 feet, 200 yards of 50lbs power pro, 100 yards of 60lbs trilene big game.
If you use the right knot you can easily mend line in your spool without causing issues.
p.s. spinning is the way to go.
Also line rating does make a huge difference in how you fish, keep that mind. thicker line doesn't sink as easy as thinner, lighter line.

Are you knowledgeable in how to properly set up/dial your baitcaster? Spool tension knob and brakes are very important when learning to cast.
A couple youtube videos on how to setup a baitcaster will set you up for success. Also maje sure it was spooled correctly.
Learning a baitcaster is definitely a challenge at first, but practice will make perfect. I never thought I would be able to use them, but time has taught me differently haha.

I was playing with the brakes and everything a little bit tonight, but I think I should wait until it is light out so I can see whete I'm casting. My casts aren't as accurate as with a spinning reel, so I was catching the spool like a millisecond too late and getting small nests. Nothing too bad. During the day, I wouldn't have that problem.

I have a question about the drag systems on these reels. Seems like for reels under $200 by Abu, they will either have the magnetic OR centrifugal. And the real expensive ones get both. Does anybody have a preference? The SilverMax ($60) has the magnetic. The Revo S ($130) has the centrifugal. The Revo SX ($160) has the magnetic. Then the Revo Winch ($200) seems to be the cheapest with the "Inifini" which has both magnetic and centrifugal.
Anyway it seems like I use the other adjustment knob more than the magnetic drag anyway. I'm just trying to figure out what is so great about baitcasters.

Heh, I used to have dreams like that when I was a kid. I have had that blue Plano bag for so long though. It is easy enough to carry around. I'm hesitant to go any bigger because that would mean a regular hard box that is near impossible to walk around with.

If you bring one lure, I would tell you to grab a Mepps #1, natural color skirt with a silver or gold blade. Or a gold/silver Rapala, smaller size.
I have caught everything from small bream to 4lb+ bass on the Mepps #1. Just make sure you can cast it. If you are using 12lb line, a #1 won't cast very far.
Also you might want to think about braid line. PowerPro or Spider Wire. 40lb braid is about the same diameter as 12lb mono line. You might be able to find other uses for it /out/.

Notice the 20lb in the pic, I have 10lb-20lb braid on pretty much everything aside from one big catfish/saltwater rod. And the 10lb is nice for not losing lures every time I hit some weeds.

Mepps are killers. I've never been a huge fan of the ones without skirts, but supposedly those are better for trout than the skirted ones (which I don't catch in FL).

This lake trout pulled me off my dock. I was reaching down with the net, trying not to lose tension on the line and one last kick pulled me in. It was so worn out from the fight that I was actually able to catch up with it and net it. Ironically if I had of been wearing a life jacket, that fish would have gotten away

At least you don't have to worry about gators. The place I was at Friday, there's a 13' gator that lives right under the dock. He's really used to people and just wants to be fed, but I wouldn't want to be in the water with him.

Those lake trout look like a fun catch tho. I get mostly largemouth and peacock bass here. Peacocks are a fuckin blast tho, I had a nice one follow my lure up to the shore today and I was so mad he didn't bite. A 14" peacock fights like an 18"+ largemouth.

Yes, and you still need to know what fish are open in what bodies of water. Like in Ontario zone 14, lake trout are open for catch and release in May then are open June July August, but closed entirely in the fall because they're fall spawners

Ehh the braid acts really similar to mono of the same diameter. Just without a couple of the drawbacks like the memory and losing strength over time.
Only reason I would take the braid off is to do flouro for some reason. But I do mostly shoreline fishing and flouro makes stuff sink way too fast in most cases.

How much is the license? If you are doing catch & release, it has to be easy enough. Especially if you are a resident.
FL is strange because of the saltwater, freshwater, and everything between. There are a bunch of licenses if you plan on keeping certain fish during certain seasons. But I pay like $18/yr for freshwater and shoreline saltwater. If I want to be able to fish saltwater from a boat, I think it ends up being $30 or $35 total, I bought that for my lil bro because his rich friends own boats. Then I think there is an additional snook stamp for a couple $ if you want to keep those in season along with a few more for specific fish.
Either way, $18 for fresh and saltwater for a year. And I don't really keep anything so I don't worry about those rules.
Just paid 37.50 in Mass for Freshwater and Salt permits/licenses.

Anyone use something like this to go fishing? I had a car at the time and wanted a boat but couldn't tow/store one. This thing folds up into a giant Tupperware plastic tub thing for easy storage. Me and some buddies farting around at the bay. Putting the freshwater motor in saltwater was meh. Worked, but probably wouldn't do it again. Washed it out real good after and all was fine. It was WAY too windy that day, ended up blowing back to the neighbors pier and they had to get out there. I came way out to the right on my own and sort of drifted in at an angle back to the pier. This was for my bro's bachelor party, good times.
