Is the Smith and Wesson 500 the ultimate bear defense gun for hikers? After all, it is the most powerful handgun in the world, and who wants do carry a rifle just to go hiking?
>>
>>643541

I rather carry a rifle. More rounds, that quick reload, that stopping power depending on what you got.

That hanged gun would be what I take to go take a dump.

Plus have you ever fired a S&W500? Not the easiest to do a follow up shot. Recoil can wreck some one ppl.

No thanks. Rather carry a rifle for my main. Handgun for back up.
>>
Really depends on if you are protecting against black bear, or brown.

I brought my S&W .45 M&P for black bear territory. I think that would be sufficient. I pack +p rounds.

For grizzly I'd say a .357 or .44 mag is sufficient. The 500 is too big and heavy to be practical.

>>
Theoretical question here. How large a role do you think muzzle flash and noice play?
>>
>>643542
>I rather carry a rifle. More rounds, that quick reload, that stopping power depending on what you got.
Most rifles in bear-stopping calibers don't have more than 5 rounds.
>Plus have you ever fired a S&W500? Not the easiest to do a follow up shot. Recoil can wreck some one ppl.
The recoil is actually not that bad. The revolver comes with a built in compensator.

You carry a rifle. You WEAR a handgun. That's the advantage of a handgun. I would carry a rifle when hunting, but when hiking, a pistol on the hip is much more convenient.

>>643545
>For grizzly I'd say a .357 or .44 mag is sufficient.
How sure are you? Sure enough to bet your life on it, because you literally are.
>The 500 is too big and heavy to be practical.
It's only five pounds. That's maybe a pound or two more than an alternative handgun. If that's too heavy, you need a more comfortable holster. Remember that a gun is supposed to be comforting, not comfortable.
>>643548
It takes to long to sling off your back and mount on your shoulder. Remember that a few seconds could cost you your life.
>>643550
They may scare the bear, but I wouldn't bet my life on it. If I'm shooting at a bear, I want that bullet to blow him to high heaven.
>>
>>643552

.308 has worked perfect for my bear hunting trips, also taken down full grown moose and full grown elk. 30 round magazine included....yeah, rather take my rifle.

Plus that is the best thing about ARs. They come in so many dif calibers. So again, rather take my rifle.

I'm also i'm an Alaskan fag. As far back as I can recall (32 yrs old), my family and I have filled the freezer using those type of guns. So your opinion doesn't matter to me. So fuck off fag.
>>
>>643552
you only need 300 ft.lbs with a well placed shot to cleanly kill a bear with a bow anon.. that's pretty much a hot loaded heavy .22lr of course arrows are a bit different because razor blades and shit vs blunt object.
>>
>>643558
I never said there was anything wrong with .308. I hunt with it myself, but we are talking about hiking, not hunting. Do you really want to carry a rifle while hiking when you could just hang a pistol on your hip and forget about it? That way you can have two hands free.

Get a Glock 20 and use Buffalo Bore 220 grain hardcast. 15 +1 rounds of total devistation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sl%C3%A6depatruljen_Sirius

Among the equipment used by the Sirius Sledge Patrol is the M1917 Enfield bolt-action rifle chambered in .30-06 Springfield, known in Danish service as the Gevær M/53 (17), and the Glock 20 pistol chambered in 10mm Auto.

The reason for changing their sidearm is their previous Pistol M/49 sidearms chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum proved insufficient against the polar bears encountered.

It may not be a SW 500 or a .480 redhawk, but its a 357 rapid fire slingshot that only weights .5lb more. But honestly if your hiking rather than hunting, your going to prob encounter a bear within rock throwing distance and stopping one with whatever you choose to you carry will come down to how you react.

45-70 is definitely a good choice. so would a 12 gauge.

however, if safety is #1, i would argue that a .308 high capacity modern carbine would be the best choice. easier to handle, no fuss, plenty of ammunition. how many shots can you land with that 45 if a bear is coming from 100m? 3? 4?

bottom line: if i didn't give a fuck about style, then i'd be carrying a full power carbine. easier to carry, faster ready, plenty of ammo allows for warning shots + reduces nerves. idk about you, but i feel like i would be more accurate if i didn't have to worry that i only had 4 shots. just have to aim at centre mass and keep a controllable rate of fire.

My Ruger is a 7.5" bbl, pretty long. If I went 14", I'd just do aT/C Encore or Contender. Not bear defensive, but would do a 4" Redhawk in .460 crossdraw, so yeah.

Even my Eagle would not be ideal, though pic related day I had 1 (one) f2f due to a limp wrist. It would give great follow ups and is very controllable.

I still prefer muh wheelies!

>Is the Smith and Wesson 500 the ultimate bear defense gun for hikers?
no, it is not. It is too big and powerful for most of them. It is really not a very practical gun. There is also not reall an "ultimate" bear defense gun because everyone's needs, skills, and values are different. I carry a glock 30 because I like having 11 rounds of .45 in a small package, and I can hit a target at 100m with it (I shoot this gun a LOT) and I feel like the chances of me encountering a bear is unlikely. Most people need more gun because they are going to miss more than I will, and they probably can't reload as fast as I can. Most people also probably need more situational awareness.

>>643542
>>643558
rifles are nice, but I think OP doesnt want to walk at the low ready all day. I think a semiautomatic .308 is a great response to bears, but I have had to haul a battle rifle around before and that shit is heavy as hell. You can get almost the same bear defense out of a lever gun for a lot less weight and look a lot less awkward. (unless you are attacked by a group of bears intent on gang-rape, then you need the battle rifle)

The most important aspect of a gun is your ability to use it. If you can't draw and hit a charging bear before it gets to you then all the power in the world isn't going to help. That being said, don't bring a 9mm to a grizzly fight.
>>
>>643541
>who wants do carry a rifle just to go hiking?
If I'm hunting I have a rifle anyway.

If I'm not hunting I don't carry a gun at all. Pointless extra weight. Don't act like a retard and you have nothing to fear from bears.
>>
Do you people honestly think you need a gun to go hiking... I just camped alone in a lean to in a huge national forest overnight and did not need a weapon to protect against bears
>>
>>644381

Need? No.

Prefer under certain circumstances? Maybe.

I took my .45 on the long trail in vermont because I had encountered black bear there before. I admit I've only been close to one, but it was not a fun experience coming upon an animal that I knew could possibly kill me while I had no defense whatsoever.

I didn't need the gun on that hike, but I don't regret taking it. You never know.
>>
>>643870
Or maybe you should load them all with lead in case you actually need to use your gun?

>>
>>643996

I'd only bring a really short barrel as an emergency firearm anyway, but if you're using it as protection in a small plane just bring the rifle or a long barrel.

I loaded 4 240 gr hollow points in the first 4, and 2 420 gr +p+ rounds in the last. I don't know if the gun could fire the +p+ rounds (meant for a heavier 8lb Ruger) but I hoped I'd never have to get that far to have to fire them.

look up Bella Twin. little girl that killed a world record grizzly that charged her and a friend with a single shot from a .22.

based on personal experience with bears you avoid 99% of problems by using a bear bell so as not to startle them, put your food up and away from your camp, and be mindful of where you go in spring and especially fall. the problem with guns in an attack is if you don't kill the fucking thing, now it's pissed and can still see and probably is still in good shape to attack. With bear spray you basically overwhelm its senses through the weakest point: mucous membranes. I saw some kids who were harassing a homeless man once and he pepper sprayed them. All 3 couldn't do shit after that at all. I had to stop one from falling off a subway platform. The bears I regularly see are grizzly and I'd estimate about 2m thick in girth on the average. good luck penetrating that to a vital organ. In the end if you can shoot an accurate shot that's the main thing. My view is people in this thread are just jacking themselves to sleep with calibers here. Even I deal with bears 4-5 times a year and they are so much of a non issue in the first place. I've had more issues from gopher holes.

>i don't think anyone here has ever been approached by a bear, let alone been charged at by one.
Wrong. Many people here, including myself, have been approached by a bear or seen a bear in the woods. Being charged by one is a different story.

>You shoot a bear (out of season) at 100m and the DNR is hauling your ass to jail.
1) They wouldn't know the range you shot it.
2) It doesn't matter. As long as the bear was a threat to your life, then you get off the hook.
