Traditional/classic/historic pocket knife general.

What do you have/carry? What do you like about it? What made you choose it over something modern? Has it ever saved your butt or some other cool story?

Anybody here make knives? I've built/modified a few pocketknives from Rough Rider kits and I'm really enjoying it. I'd like to start building from scratch soon, I just need a good mail order heat treat since I can't do it myself.

Yeah man, I'm starting to really like the traditionals a lot more now. Picked up this little GEC and it's real nice. Got given a nice little S&M at my birthday too.

I'm not quite sure if it qualifies too but I also love the Sodbuster pattern knives. This one is custom made by a dude here in the UK (Shing). Easily one of the stiffest slipjoint mechanisms I've ever come across.

Sweet!

I'm looking to get something small and carbon myself for my watch pocket. I love my Leatherman and I'll probably never give up multitools but they really do suck at actual knife stuff. The combination of fat, un-ergonomic, heavy, slippery handle with no sort of grooves or guard and a light skinny blade makes me always feel like it's going to slip back into my hand and cut me.

I love my pocket toolbox but I want something small, light and sharp for getting splinters and other grandpa-knife-y things.

I really like swaybacks but I might go with a mini toothpick if I come across a nice one. Hopefully I'll end up making my own but I'd like one (or a few) from the big American brands like Case and GEC.

I carry one of those french knives as well but with no cork screw since I am a whiskey drinker.
Cant beat it for style points.
Mine has the bee, never seen one with grapes before, pretty coo

I love how over the top people go with laguioles.

sodbusters absolutely count, nice one!

It's really nice to see a traditionals thread here

I adore GEC but my bladeforums knife from them had the fit and finish of a somali outhouse
>>
>>643361
Really? Pics of said knife? I've never heard any complaints about gec's fit and finish
>>
>>643373
GEC's in general have super strong springs but this thing wanted to break every fingernail i had just trying to get it open. And the blades themselves were almost completely unbeveled or wildly non-symetrical.

Damn, did you contact them with your concerns? From what I've heard their customer service is pretty good.

Here's my Northfield Michigan Jack, easily my favorite knife (right now at least lol)

I like the peasant knife, it seems that people either love it or hate it. I don't own one but I did get to use one on a camping trip a while back and really enjoyed it, definitely on my "to buy" list

The one blade I've had from GEC so far was probably similar concerning the grinds. Niw that I think about it most of my traditionals have come that way but I'm never entirely happry with the grinds on knives I get. I've become a bit anal about them over the last year or so. As foe back springs being too strong, I'll take it of you don't want it haha! A strong backpring on a slipjoint is gold in the UK.

Do you find the easy opening cut-out to be effective or it just a throwback to the old knives. It's a real looker by the way, wharncliffes seem to be reall popular just now and I can see why. I rather fancy one like >>643316 Good sharp point on there for splinter digging and such like.

>>643359

Gee, maybe that was, I don't know, the joke? Why are you so mad that I'm a supreme gentleman Anon?
>>

>gold in the uk

is that because of the "gravity knife" BS?

How do you guys feel about Victorinox knives as EDC?
Apparently they have USB drives on them now.

This is not a troll post, new to /out/ and legitimately looking for a decent honest answer.
>>
>>643590

Nah, if you want to carry a blade you either need a "good reason", usually related to your profession or specific activity or it needs to have a cutting edge under three inches and be "readily foldable"- Since most folks fall into the latter category it nice to have a slipjoint that's as close to a locker as possible whilst still being one.

Mind you I've had a few friends lose some quite expensive knives to customs who claimed they were "gravity knives" because the could flick them open with a good solid wrist flick and nothing else. Benchmades spydercos, you name it. Where as I can sleep fairly soundly importing a GEC or similar knowing that some twat that works for the UK Border Agency is going to pull a muscle trying to flick them open.

>>643698

Victorinox and Wenger are great. I prefer the Alox models myself but I don't know if they really fit in to the "traditional" category.

At first i thought the eo was just gimmicky but i find myself using it all the time, it's really nice if i'm wearing gloves. When using it without gloves I end up resting my pinky finger in there, nice for a little more stability/control. I think of it as more of a "luxury" feature. Now i find myself looking for knives that have the feature. I know there are a few makers/modders over on bladeforums that will add the eo to your knife for you.

Those case swaybacks are really nice, i like both the jack and gent versions. The blues and greens that case produces are beautiful, definitely adding some to my collection. Right now i only have a seahorse whittler in red jigged bone and it's a handy little knife. I had a swayback jack in sea green bone but i made the mistake of showing it to my dad and he loved it just as much as i did. With all the knives he's given to me over the years i had to return the favor. I'm silently hoping he'll want to trade it back to me for something else but i'm not holding my breath.

>>643698
SAK's are great for edc imo, if thats enough knife for your daily tasks. I only go for the farmers, pioneers, and cadets in alox. I personally am not interested in the models with usb drives but i can understand why some might.

>>643708
i would definitely consider sak's traditionals

A lot of Case knives in here. I went to the Case factory (side by side with Zippo factory) in Bradford PA. Pretty cool place.

Where/When did you get such a thing?

I'm dying to get a gent (single blade) in either a blue or aqua/sea green color and CV blade. AFAIK currently the gent is SS only and only the various shades of brown handles are offered for CV blades.

I really want pic related but I can't find one anywhere. The video is about 2 years old.

Love having one, but i use it mostly for the tweezers. The blade ill use to help dig out steel slivers, but not for cutting much cuz i carry a folder with me. Ive used the nail file never, but the screwdriver end on it a few times. The scissors are second most used, generally for my fingernails though. Toothpick is also nice. Overall its more or a personal/hygiene tool for me.

Wenger watch with nato strap is perfectly acceptable, you shut your whore mouth.
>>
>>644134
It's a fine as a watch. It's completely contrary to the theme of the photo. A nice automatic with a brown or tan stitched oil leather strap would be much more appropriate.
>>
>>643311
I got the sodbuster also. Yellow handle. The bigger one. It's awesome man. Holds an edge really well. Skinned many a deer with it.
>>

>>643841
I picked it up on ebay in 2012 as a birthday present.

I don't ever see the version with the script shield anymore, but the newer versions are still available.
>>
>>644389
I mean I know swayback gents are out there, but I want that color, or one similar, and the double bolsters. The current ones only have bolsters on the blade end, and only come in a handful of colors, most of which are special mosaics or other $$$ things that aren't actually meant to be carried.

I'll just have to watch ebay for a while and jump on the first one I like.

Is it a good knife? I'm tossing up between Mercator and doukdouk. Input is welcomed
>>
>>645563
I would always go for the mercator over the dou douk.
Mercator is slimmer and comes with a solid locking mechanism which makes it safer and more versatile than the douk douk.
The Mercator has a more elegant feel to it, but that is just opinion.

The Mercator comes with ether a carbon or a stainless blade, depending on your preferences.
>>
>>645567
Yeah, doukdouk just has the style going for it unfortunately. Do the blades hold and edge well on the mercators?

>>645569
Yes it does. And the carbon blade can be made incredible sharp but obviously needs more attention than the stainless one.
It just feels like the essence of a pocket knife: take what's useful, strip away everything that's unescessary and what you are left with is this.

I wish there was a car like that.
