water is your main concern a surprising amount of it gets used up day by day and it doesn't store very well for years in pet bottles so you actually need to put some effort in that one.
then you should stockpile the basics sugar flour rice some canned meat and fish in a cold dry place.
thirdly the meds research what keeps well after expiration dates and store some antibiotics disinfectants and painkillers and whatnot for a couple of years.
in the very beginning you should decide what time you want to prepare for and base everything on that. don't forget 4l of water per person per day is the main priority.
the generally recommended 3 day bag should be easy enough and most households have enough food for 3 days anyways only without power and water you can't prepare most of it if utilities are out.

For a while I was buying those 2.5 gallon water jugs and sticking them in a closet. Turns out the plastic is super cheap and one got a hole and drained all over everything.... big mess.
I'm thinking about getting a couple big blue plastic jugs and filling them with tap water to store 30 gallons or so (2 people and 1 medium dog for 2 weeks). It will get used for camping trips before it's been sitting for too long. Hurricanes and power outages are a real possibility where I live.

I got a bunch of MREs, emergency rations, a lot of non perishables, water purification tabs, fuel tabs, and excellent cold weather gear because Canada.
Also guns, AR, pistols, shotguns, rifles, lots of guns and ammo.
I'm only really worried about natural disasters and power outages, and my stockpile is more than enough to handle those contingencies.

yeah if you know the water supply is gonna be tainted or stop then you can clean out the bathtub and fill it. chlorinate it from time to time and cover it to keep dirt out.
it's only like 100-150l tho and you have to know in advance.
if shtf without much warning or you are not at home then of it's a water supply infection type crisis or the sewer seeps up into your bathtub (yeah it can happen) you are fucked.
