Well it's the shittyest picture I took last night so it'll have to.
I took a shittyer one tonight just for OP.
My Nikon D3100 that I have no idea how to use so every pic is a shitty pic.

Moon is in full sun, but the dark around it throws off your auto exposure, so either spot meter off the moon or shoot with the sunny 16 rule in manual (try ISO100, f/5.6, 1/125 sec),

It's the lens aperture... not sure where the control is on the D3100 though, on the 7100 it's the back control wheel.
Just looked it up... you hold down the exposure compensator button (+/- on the top of the camera near the button) and turn the dial.

I found it but the moon is still a white ball with no detail. As if to much light is coming in.

Sure it's in M mode and you didn't change the shutter speed by accident?
You could also try changing the meter mode to "spot" http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-select-an-exposure-metering-mode-with-a-nik.html and shooting in automatic.

It was in manual mode. Looking through the view finder the image was very crisp. I'll try spot mode.

Just had a look at another moon pic and I might have given you awrong exposure values, try it at 1/250 or 1/500 shutter instead. My apologies.
(I remember I was doing fancy photoshop layering with a couple of different photos to get jupiter to show up in the first one and that may have messed up the exif)
