Where my hunters at?
Gun deer season started here in WI and shot a mom and a baby. Felt bad but worked out over all since the fawn woulda died without the doe
It was fucking cold
>>
What an offal pic.
>>
I thought taking females was considered shit-tier hunting?
>>
>>634424
Took me 5 hours of 30 degree weather to take pics of that digestive system
>>
>>634429
We all want a monster buck with 12 point antlers, but eating venison is just as good for the way I hunt. The meat you take time to scout and shoot is pretty rewarding
>>
>>634412

You are the reason that guns should be illegal
>>
>>634412
Why would you shoot a doe if she was with her little one? Where I hunt, the unwritten rule is that you let them pass. You aim for a bigger, solitary doe or a buck.
I guess it also depends where you hunt. What's the limit of deer per hunter in your area?
>>
>>634429
Females usually taste better, I enjoy the hunt and meat the most so I really don't go for too many bucks.
>>
>>634444
I hope this is bait
>>
>>634446
Didn't see the fawn until I had shot the doe, and it had come in through some thick brush. I decided it was best to just shoot the fawn rather than let it slowly freeze or starve
Where I am in WI, its one antlerless and one buck by permit at this time of year.
>>
>>634412

That's great and all OP but not posting this in the hunting general just reeks of attention whoring or shit-stirring.

True, it's better to end its misery right away than to have wolves feast on it in a few weeks.

Talking about wolves, do you guys know how to hunt them in a wooded area? There's been a lot of wolf/coyote activity on the lands that I hunt and I would like to get rid of them fuckers.

Either I somehow lure them to me or I go get my trapper license and try it that way

I fell through some ice two hours ago in the marsh I was walking through. My piggies are starting to hurt from the cold and my pants have frozen solid.
Currently sitting here waiting for something to come by. Will probably take off before frostbite sets in too badly. Lost my beanie when I fell too since it was in my pocket. This sucks.

>>

No. First time hunting. Was supposed to go with my cousins but they flaked.
>>
Hey hunters, can you guys explain something to me? So most trail heads and hiking bulletins are being posted about hunting seasons opening, urging hikers to be careful and wear bright colors. What I don't understand is how is it possible that hunters shoot people without seriously realizing what they're shooting at? totally baffles me. Care to explain?
>>
>>634617
What the fuck, get out of there
Wet clothes can kill you
>>
>>634618
Lol OK moralfag
>>
>>634623
What made you decide to go out in the first place?

>>634624
Public hunting lands are high pressure zones. You're not very likely to get anything so people wind up shooting blindly at noises. The competition is pretty steep. Any person who pulls the trigger without realizing they're shooting at a human being shouldn't be out there in the first place. Kind of like >>634623. They're more of a danger than anything else, especially on public land. They're reckless, ignorant, lack patience, disrupt seasoned hunters, and give those hunters a bad name.
>>
>>634624
Its for the chance that you don't get seen in the background. Sure, hunters can recognize you if they see your full figure, but if you're behind some brush or tree, they may shoot at something and not see you in the indirect line of fire.
>>
>>634601
Where do you live that wolves are a problem and you can bait them? From what I know, they're a game species in the states and can't be baited.
>>
>>634635

You have no limit on coyotes and wolves here.

I mean that I thought you wanted to leave the babymakers alive to make more delicious young deers. To take one breeding aged female, it will take years to replace her. On the other hand, a single buck can crush a truckload of doe puss, so eating the males is supposed to be better in the long run.
>>
>>634830
I live in a place that has deer population troubles, as in there are too many.
You're generally allowed to kill 2 doe and 1 buck around where I live, and honestly it could be higher if there weren't so many poachers.
I love deer and seeing about but they need to be thinned for obviously there safety (food and shit) and because they like to run into cars all the time.
>>
>>634412
Hope you had a tag for that doe/fawn m8.
>>
>>634830
Seems like most states can't reach a even a minimum posthunt population goal, so deer population isn't a problem, and some places only want them killed to document the spread of CWD. Deer are much more elusive than you think.

Where are you hunting, bro? What unit are you with? still in? Also I highly recommend getting out of there and trying to get DRY and WARM.
>>
>>634858
In Nevada we'd tie a housecat to a stake. It'd meow its ass off and coyotes from all over would come pouring in.
>>
>>634830
The general rule across most of the midwest and south is that you'd have to kill ~40% of the doe population before a given birthing season, just to keep the herds from growing.

That is considering normal predation, but not waves of disease and shit. Prior to a big CWD outbreak Wisconsin would have had to kill triple the yearly hunter counts, to get the herd to what biologists considered appropriate for the habitat.

We've killed down deer predators to the point where the only good way to keep herds from eating the forest to bare dirt is to hunt them pretty damn hard, and focus on does.

Also, does are tastier during hunting season because the bucks are all swole up...so win/win.

You are dumb
Hunting is more then just killing.. Learn about theanimal you are hunting.
Fawns can be completely weaned and survive without milk by 10 weeks of age (2½ months), but does often wean them at 12 to 16 weeks (3 to 4 months). Which means that 6 month old fawn would be able to survive without the mother,
And what did you get? 20 pounds of meat from the fawn?
You are the slob hunter that good give other hunters a bad reputation
>>
>>634957
If the fawn is stilling following the doe it's probably not going to survive without her. It's pretty clear that he viewed his actions as a mercy kill and wasn't worried about how much meat he could harvest.
>>
>>634963
> kill without a tag
> poaching
>>
>>634967
The fawn would have died anyway, OP acting ethically is definitely in the spirit of the law.
>>
>>634957
What are you talking about? That fawn is small enough to be a fall birth and might not have made the winter even with a doe. If it was 20 lbs, how the hell would it live through a long winter if the wolves didn't get it first?
>>
>>634978
Everything dies anyway, that fawn didn't have a chance for life.

Look at op pic and talk op ethics.

>>634518
And yes.
>>
>>634990
> if it was 20 pounds

Confirmed has never dressed game or slaughtered animals.

20#'s was the projected meat yield, not animal weight.
>>
>>634996
Kek ok so if it was 40 lbs it def would've survived the winter I got you
>>
>>634412
I didn't know Wisconsin was giving out doe tags this year. We can't get them in Douglas county at least, maybe not in the northern half of the state.
>>
>>634997
Wolves need to eat too. Now someone's dogs and cats will go missing.

You got me now?
>>
Hey I just posted a new thread asking about this but I'll just ask here, what firearm do you guys use to hunt? I've never been hunting and want to go next year but I'm not sure what is best. I'd prefer a bolt action rifle.
>>
>>634412
And they both would had been just fine with out you and your stupid fucking gun.
>>
>>635015
Christ I hate people like you. You do realize we've practically erased their predators. Hunting is required to keep the population down so they don't exhaust their food supplies and die from famine. This is basic biology, what do they teach in high school nowadays?
>>
>>635020
So you feel the need to slaughter them so they won't die? Man that is the best fucking logic I've heard today.
>>
>>635015
Why are you even on this board. Go back to your tumblr hugbox.
>>
>>635029
Alright, cool. Let nature take its course then. The deer population will be wiped out nation wide by next winter.
>>
>>635031
Yeah okay Dentist Dan. Whatever you have to tell yourself to justify murdering innocent beings to feed your fat fucking face with flesh that you arent even meant to consume
>>
>>635030
I'm on this board because I'm an avid hiker and lover of nature. Why are you here?
>>
>>635038
Go ahead and continue denying scientific evidence supporting the fact that hunting is a necessity. Granted, It wouldn't be if we never hunted their predators into oblivion but that's something you should take up with your great-great-grand pappy (plus who wants a pack of feral wolves living in their back yard. People have children and as nature has so gracefully taught us, children are easy meal tickets). While i could understand not condoning hunting waterfowl, squirrels, or hell even raccoons; deer, elk, moose and the like require something to keep them in check.
>>
>>635038
At least hunting gives the wildlife a chance versus cattle or other farm animals who are raised in shit conditions specifically to be slaughtered.
>>
>>635048
And to add what this guy said, hunting is to feed your family, it's not like they are being shot and just left out there to rot.
>>
>>635052
To feed your family...Because OP lives in Sub-Saharan Africa and must hunt to ensure the survival of his offspring. If that is the case then I'd be more understanding
>>
>>634412
Ugh why is this still allowed it's 2015
>>
>>634444

OP here. Wow there are a lot of slack jawed faggots in /out/.
I'm eating good tonight. The doe saved me a good chunk of money I would've used on groceries and the fawn made a good roast

Might go back innawoods on Thursday, but weather might call for rain
>>
>>635002

Cry some more bud
>>
>>635067
No, I'd rather see a human not believing they must consume flesh in order to survive. There is absolutely no reason to kill another being for food unless you are living in a 3rd world country. I make perfect sense dear sir.
>>
>>635093
So you would rather us kill animals and not consume their flesh? They are going to die regardless, we need to curb their numbers so they don't wind up making themselves go extinct. I'm still taking about hunting by the way, not the abhorrent conditions most farm-fresh animals have to endure. Yes I still eat them, but I find it unfortunate how they are treated.

>>635112
I'm from Madison, but get up early as hell to drive all the way to Sauk County. There's a lot of untapped country out there in those hills.
You're pretty far up there, pretty much a Minnesotan.
>>
>>634978
How about OP calls the DNR up and explains that what he did was against the law, but in the spirit of the law. I'd be interested in seeing how that goes.
>>
>>635160
Sometimes ethics calls on us to maneuver outside the letter of the law. I refuse to fault OP for having a strong conviction instead of blindly following the letter of the law and ignoring it's intended purpose.
>>
>>635165
The intended purpose of the law is to prevent things like this from happening. He is not an ethical hunter. An ethical hunter would have had the patience to realize the doe had a fawn and let them both go.
>>
Why is it wrong to take small and female deer?
Are they endangered? I mean we do also eat baby farming animals and don't bother about it.

I live in Germany and hunting is still very traditional; though they argue in a modern way that they need to keep the population of deer low to keep the forests healthy and the streets safe and it is not a sport.
But in practice they tend to feed deer in the winter, do mainly shoot the males for trophy and want to get rid of the wolf again. eh?
>>
>>635169
OP realized his fuckup and acted to prevent undue cruelty in nature, I see no fault in setting things right that you put wrong. Even if it defies the letter of the law, it's fulfilling the intended purpose to make hunting as humane as possible. Ethics are a very personal thing, if OP had good reason and was acting in good faith, then he acted ethically.
>>
>>634957

>>
>>635007
30-06 bolt action, you can use it for almost any animal (unless you want to keep coyote pelts)
You can get a Remington 770 for 300$ or so, it does an OK job at 50-200 yards
>>
>>635119

How's the hunting "pressure" there, you guys fight over territory or there's plenty to go around?
>>
>>634412

Americans, please get your shit together, your sloppy hunting is being used as anti-gun arguments here
>>
>>635190
Oh it sucks big time, can't go a mile into the country without seeing trucks parked on the side of the road or blaze orange. Its really important to scout on the offseason if you really want to beat competition or find an area where no one has found yet.

>>635160

>>
>>635007
bolt actions are great they're powerful and aren't too bad to maintain. Semiautos are more forgiving on missed shots but their chambers can jam during the cold seasons.
>>
>>634412
So OP, did you shoot it in the guts or do you just suck at gutting deer?
>>
>>635015
They would have froze to death or died from starvation or predation. They live about 5 years on average and typically don't die of old age.

Depends on the management zone. North Forest zone and central forest zone are buck only, but central farmland and southern farmland allow doe tags. I spent opening weekend hunting with friends in Adams County, didn't see shit, but I have my doe tag for Dane county where I live so I plan on getting out before work this week.
>>
>>634967

Hi OP, while I fully support ethical and legal hunting, your photo shows a distinct lack of respect towards the animals you harvested.

Try working on your field dressing and photo techniques; both are shit-tier (literally - it's in the photo).
>>
>>635275
>thinking pulling the shit tubes a certain way out of an animal is a way of showing respect
Yeah they're real dignified through that. Plus I snapped it on my phone while my buddy was still gutting it.
>>
>>635281
The least you could do is snap a pic before the work starts or snap a pick without the deer stacked up and lying about in their own gutpiles for fucks sakes.

And yes, clean field dressing is also a sign of respect resulting in less real or potential meat spoilage.

You're in an open area, and uncamoflauged. Not to mention, thats a heavy gun to hunt with. And I don't think you've got much experience hunting anyway with the mistakes you're making. I'm positive they're smelling you a mile away... especially since im sure you keep that gun heavily oiled because "muh war gun".
And even if you did take a deer, you're prolonging the amount of time you're going to be outside when you should be thinking of keeping most of the toes on your feet.
Heres some advice. Get some bubba brush camo, a bolt-action hunting rifle, lay down in tall grass, and cover yourself in doe piss. Its not tacticool army guy stuff, but it works, and thats why people do it.

>You're in an open area, and uncamoflauged
You have to wear bright orange in most places to hunt, anyway. Deer can barely see color, so as long as you're still, it's fine. The thing you need to worry about is scent.

>thats a heavy gun to hunt with
what the fuck does this have to do with anything?

People in general tend to behave in similar ways when faced with similar situations, so I can definetely understand why the swedish left uses your sloppy hunting as an argument for stricter gun laws.(Even if i don't agree with them)

>>635452
See above. Since our society have a rather well-functioning hunting system set up where you need to take a training course in order to be allowed to hunt legally, We very rarely have hunting accidents or other mishaps happen during hunting season. The leftist swedish media knows this, and turns to the country with the arguably laxest gun laws in the western hemisphere to provide horrible statistics for them.
>>
>>635733
>need to take a training course in order to be allowed to hunt legally

It's this way in most of America too. Sweden has the population of about only 1 US state, consequently, America has 50x more potential for hunting incidents. It would be better to compare North Carolina or Georgia to Sweden in this regard.

I wasn't doing it for the sake of scientific rigor. I was doing it to illustrate the difference between 2 countries. Sweden claims to have superior hunting/gun laws, and wildlife management policies that are far better than ours. That's all fine and dandy, considering that Sweden has somewhere in the neighborhood of 300K licensed hunters.

How well do you think their regs and policies would hold up if the regulated community increased by a couple of orders of magnitude?

Comparing the entirety of a country to just one state isn't accurate, either.

Go where the other hunters won't. Good spots, even the less obvious ones, that are within easy walks of parking areas and roads have a good chance of having other hunters focus on them as well. Find spots that are deep enough you can outwalk the average hunter and you have a better chance of finding areas with less pressure where the deer retreat to.

Also have multiple locations based on wind conditions.

If the rut is in full swing set up a scent line, play the wind, choose a few good shooting lanes and set up bucks bombs or something like that (2-3 cover a good 100 yrds) in a line and try to blanket an area with the sent so when deer pick up on it they follow it down the line and hopefully across one of the lanes you picked out.

While I agree that gun control is not the answer to gun violence, you can't exactly compare the crime rates of states with and without lax gun control laws. Of course New York and DC are going to have higher crime rates because denser population breeds more gang violence and gun crimes.
The argument that most gun violence occurs as a result of illegal guns is strongest here. After all, guns are outright illegal in Mexico, and everyone knows there's no gun violence there. Why should you waste time and money punishing people who just want to shoot as a hobby instead of going after the actual criminals?
>>

When you're on a big lease like that with a lot of people they usually ask that you dress and clean in a designated area...and they have bone yard and such.

I grew up in Texas in the days before hunting became a fad. My dad was on a lease with 7 people for 5K+ acres....in the San Saba area. And you could hunt anything legal (unlike many leases now days). I had never heard of not dressing out your own deer relatively near where it drops until we lost that lease and decided to try a day lease the next season.

In any case, the cleaning shed is convenient and efficient. My buddy, when taking a dear on or near his property, likes to take his deer back to the house and dress it hanging. I hunt East Texas NF a lot and I often dress the deer on the ground in the woods.
