Trespassing criminal. Not interested in feeding your illegal activity. Train hopping is dangerous, illegal, and you should not do it. Ever. Under any circumstances.

A compass and a map

Can't you go /out/ without your digital toys?

>paper maps

there's a reason why people only buy paper maps for roads only.. cause they stay in your car, away from any water. Also paper maps normally just cover either a single area you buy them for, or silly state and national parks. Not other places.

thanks to better maps and A-gps correction its faster and better the other gps options

Garmin e-trex 20 is pretty good. Maps are easy enough to "buy" online and you can also load up maps from openstreetmap and others.

I do most of my navigation just with the map and compass, but I go solo, I need a backup, especially when visibility goes down to 00, been trapped twice in a white out plus it is really handy at night.

Map goes in waterproof map pouch, and map is more essential than gps and much more reliable.

I have a forest service map that has a waterproof costing. The thing is pretty big and will make a good water cover for an emergency shelter. They only cost 10$
