most shirts like that have a piece of material sown in inside the sleeve at elbow level. and a loop around elbow level outside the sleeve. you loop the inner fabric into the outer loop and button it.

Not true. Eventually the fabric gets tired (the weave relaxes) and will start to fall. Having to put another roll in not only can bring the sleeve to an uncomfortable height, but stretch out the remainder of the material. Eventually they'll fall no matter what. Sleeve clasps are a godsend on extended hikes. (3+days)
