I want one I can make a few little tools with and a small shelter preferably.

BKII.
You are welcome.
>>
>>626745
Suitable for chopping wood etc? Only small pieces?
>>
>>626749
Did you take two fucking seconds to do a BKII img search or are you lazy AND stupid?
>>
>>626742
looks utter shit wtf?
>>
>>626749
bk2 is an anti-tank knife it is suitable to pierce most WW1 armor and fell trees up to half a meter in diameter.
>>
>>626749

BKII is shit at everything.

Get a carving knife and a chopper if you want to chop.

I have a Busse Basic 11 I love and a little mora I use for carving tools etc...

Sometimes I use a Spyerco Perrin.
>>
>>626765
> for you

OP, some people just don't have the knife skills to handle a BKII.

Typical issues involves weak wrists and long finger nails... and homosexual tendencies.

You may not either, it is a very advanced knife design not suited to amatures and not for posers.
>>
>>626773
I admittedly have never used a BK2, only the Real Thing it clumsily tries to copy: Busse Satin Jack.

The BK2 is shit, being 1095 with injection molded plastic handle slabs. I can see if maybe a person found one that a knife cognescenti had tossed out but to actually buy one retail is pretty damn funny.

>knife skills

That is a hoot! Describe the knife skills that make 1095 tolerable. Step into the 70s and use a decent steel.

Sounds like you're in the market for a Swiss Army knife or similar. Huntsman is my fav. Coghlan's makes one too.

>That is a hoot! Describe the knife skills that make 1095 tolerable. Step into the 70s and use a decent steel.

What do you have against 1095? Name an alloy that will do better in applications well suited to 1095.
>>
Mora Companion, Condor Kephart or Bushlore.

lightweight, effective, cheap.

Wanna spend $145? check out the QuickHatch 'Hawkin'
>>
>>626736
You want to decide on your budget. Then look for something with a full tang, carbon steel, and a comfortable grip for you. Take a little time and pick out a few knives you are interested in buying. Then look at reviews online to help narrow down your choices. After you get your knife, practice with it as much as possible. Also make sure you have a good sharpener. No matter what knife you buy or how much you spend, a dull knife is always a bad knife.
>>
>>626983
actually the bk2 is not the same category as the busse
the busse is a puny little shitstain barely thicker than a mora a bk2 is nearly twice as sturdy it's pretty much a prybar
>>
>>627442

there are both 1/4"
>>
>>627442
>muh manly prybar knife
anon please. Blades that thick are a pain in the ass to work with when you're doing finer jobs or food prep.

It weighs as much as a small hatchet and small knife put together, while being vastly inferior, more expensive and less versatile than such a combo. What's the point?

not according to the stats i saw one is like 4mm flat the bk2 is 6mm skandi
>>
>>627475
i would do the fine stuff with my mora to be honest a bk2 is not made for that only does it in a pinch it's a utility knife
>>
>>627475
hatchet is also non negotiable imo
you can think of it this way:
if either your neck knife or hatchet gets damaged or lost you still have a substitute you can live with. it's kinda like if you take a multi-tool besides your toolbox you got a compact backup if anything gets fucked or dropped.
>>
>>627502
If my hatchet gets damaged I dun goofed. Estwing EBDBA, one fine one coarse.

>Carrying that much shit

Jesus did you learn watching "survival" youtubers?

You just dont loose your fucking knife, that's it.
>>
>>627573
you need backup of everything
2-3 surefire means to fire (like ferro + lighter + candle)
2-3 cutting tools (eating carving knife or folder hatchet and a belt knife)
2-3 cover material (mylar, tarp and a blanket)
2-3 containers (canteen + cup, extra waterbag whatever)
2-3 type of rope or line if one is paracord you only need some fishing line but i also like to carry some twine
>>
>>627597
oh and if you throw in a multi-tool it never hurts
>>
>>627493

They are both 1/4", not 4mm or 6mm, check the manufactures sites for specs. The BK2 doesnt have a scandi grind either.
>>
>>627612
yeah well technically it doesn't still have twice the amount of steel in diameter.
>>
>>627600
It does hurt if you want to walk more than 50 metres to your campsite.

You don't need all that shit. Most people only need a small folder, if you feel like processing wood, take a folding saw and maybe a hatchet on top of your knife. If you're hunting, take a quality skinning knife and a field sharpener.

Most multi tool attachments are useless outdoors. So you've got two screwdrivers, some shitty scissors, a file, a saw that's too small to be of use, pliers, wire cutters, a bottle opener... these things are heavy and full of tools that you either won't need or you will have a better version of anyway. If you can't improvise your way out of the failure or loss of a piece of gear then you need to get your shit together before you go /out/ alone.
>>
>>627666
multi-tools are fuck useful when you have to maintain your other gear tho or if you have to cannibalize your car for stuff and stuff like that
they also provide an extra blade and can opener which again never hurts
>>
>>627327
5160
>>
>>627671
Maintain what gear? The only thing you'll be repairing in the field is stitching fabric together. This isn't DayZ, it's a recreational outdoors trip. You're not cobbling together a helicopter from car parts.

And how is another sub par knife blade always useful? If you're that worried, carry a lightweight field sharpener and look after your stuff properly.

I used to carry a leatherman and fixed blade knife... until I realised that I NEVER NEEDED THEM. They were a waste of space and weight. Learn to use your stuff properly instead of carting around extraneous crap.
>>
>>627748
dunno last time i was out i used the pliers to grab some hot ass cup from the fire and pour water into my cup.
came in pretty handy.
i use my multi tool for something every day it's only natural to take it with me in the forest
>>
>>627748
you are talking about 1-200g like it's even noticeable.
i stop once to drink and my pack gets lighter with more weight i take a piss and i get more lighter than a multi tool could ever weight.
it's really not an issue especially if you consider i have to haul my own 260 lbs ass up a trail no that's work.
>>
>>627752
This kills the knees. Do you use the same logic for eating? 200g is 200g, that isn't nothing.
>>
>>627756
uphill does not kills the knees you got to watch the downhill tho. especially stepping off rocks. i once fucked my knee doing that too much fortunately lifting weight fixed it. dunno how but it doesn't hurt anymore.

Beckerhead reporting in, bk2 is king. Fuck what ya heard. It's a tool that can do every range of tasks a knife, hatchet or pry bar can. IF you have the muscle. Don't be a pussy, your looking for a one tool option. It's a pound alone, so if you have bitch hands you'll know if this tool is too much to handle right away.
If your hanging trouble doing finer work, add a lanyard. Slide the lanyard up your wrist and yoke up on the blade itself for yur fine work. (Skinning, traps)

I copy paste my own post from /k/ because retards are farting here too:

Becker owner are obnoxious in general.

The perfect example of poorfag that wants to pretend he has a top notch knife even though it's pretty mediocre.

It's pretty sad , really.

They're perhaps the biggest sperglord circlejerkers on Bladeforums, and their shitty 1095 slabs of steel with an "edge" are of course the best there is,

And if you dont agree, their counted neurons fart some unkind words like >>626773

Sad but true.

>>627764

You fucking mongoloid, you're as thick and as poor quality as your knife. nk2 is king my ass.

Busse is king.
>>
>>627811

Fixed blades are best for outdoors/camp kind of things. Folders are not good for beating up or doing these things with, as it puts stress on the joints of the knife. Something with a good grip, such as a G-10 handle or some kind of rubber is good. I would recommend a stainless steel, in case it'll be getting super wet. 440c is a great stainless steel with good edge retention.
If you can go full-tang, go for it.
Carrying a separate folding camp saw with you is a good idea so that you can actually saw through branches.
>>
>>627839
What are you doing with your knife to beat it up so bad? Most people probably won't need a knife for much more than cutting a piece of rope or slicing up some salami while out.
>>
>>627846
OP wanted to make small tools and a shelter. That very much calls for a good knife
>>
>>627839
I agree with everything you said, aside from the steel. Personally, I'd go for 5160.
>>
>>627849
Is it stainless? How is it compared to.. say VG10?
>>
>>627857
It's not stainless, but it's more rust resistant than, say, 1095.
>>
>>627811
I'm not here to argue qualities between brands, style or preference. Everyone has their own trail to run. Keep beating on a dead argument man, it'll get you somewhere lol.
In all honesty every knife has a breaking point. But what would drive someone to be ignorant to that breaking point and push a tool beyond it? There is no logic in that.
The 9 is thinner than the 2. The 9 is NOT a batoning knife nor should most knives be consider one. In my opinion ANY 1/4 inch thick piece of steel is worth of peforming a wedge job.
On your point of the Beckers being weak, or half assed. Look no further than the bk7 in s30vn. Kinda a moot point there buddy. People like Beckers for their handles. Kabar has done an amazing heat treat on these things over the years and keep pumping out top quality tools.

I have been going out for 20+ years with nothing bigger than a SAK. About the last five have been with the victorinox trekker.
Since coming to /out/ I now realize its a miracle I haven't died. You should never go /out/ without a 9 inch long 1/4 in thick knife.

well this particular knife is made for skinning, not batoning or even whittling....granted i dont have one but all the vids ive seen with it say that they do get dull if you hit bone (duh) i think that if they are looking for a knife for more than just processing game and filleting shit, a more sturdy knife is required.

>>
>>627917 here
Got the main blade sharpened properly, but the guthook came dull and powder coated.
Any advice on how to sharpen it?
For a 10$ full tang china made stainless blade it's not half bad besides that they seem to just seem to forge, coat and do a quick sharpening on it.
>>
>>628206

That knife and some spare blades would be a great choice for the vast majority of people out there who can't sharpen their knives. The blades are thin enough to actually be good at cutting, too.
