Birding has got to be one of the most underrated past times.
I have only had the opportunity to become familiar with southern african birds.

Colombian fag here.
We have the largest bird list of any country in the world, with 1850+ recorded species.
Years ago a friend and I bought a guide to the birds of Colombia and we got into the hobbie for a while.

But now I can identify like 30+ different species
Parrots, bluejays, woodpeckers, endemic tanagers & others also come to my window every once in a while...

OP I grew up in East Africa. My family had a copy of pic related. We wrote down the date and location whenever we identified a new species out on safari.
The book is pretty worn out now and has heirloom status in the family. Looking through it brings back great memories. Love birdwatching. Cheers for reminding me of this.
Finally this is my thread! I started bird watching as a kid. I live in Hungary,in a flatland area. Near to me are some great birdlife places, lakes and steppes. But I also have species from mountains. I have almost 200 species on my national list. I even go birdringing to a nearby lake and absolutely love it. I'd considere my self as a woodpecker fag. There is a lot of chickadees where I live and they seem pretty okay with people, they way they look makes me laugh and I like they're rappid movements.

I live in Appalachia and like bird watching. It's quite challenging.
My favorite herons / egrets I typically see are the great egret, great blue heron, tricolor heron, and the green heron.

I've never done it but you can probably volunteer at a local bird banding station, just google to see what's in your area.

So, I've started birdwatching with a guy. We simply went /out and looked for birda in the suburb of my city. Started memorising the birds from books. I would advise to learn the basic species. Looks are important but you should also memorise the songs and sounds because you will hear them before you see them.
After some years we went out to this birdringing camp. Firstly you will just watch the guys ringing the birds. Then they will teach you how to hold a bird properly. If you go there regulary then they will teach you how to get a bird out of the net. You will have to practice in order not to hurt the birds.
If you want to ring birds then you will need to put down a ringing exam. There are some terms during migration when you won't be allowed to even touch the birds unless you don't have this exam. In my country this is called CES( Central European Survey). They have strict rules because this is the most scientific part of the monitoring.
I think you should search for a binrdringing camp near you and ask them for more info.

Red tailed hawk. I walked into the kitchen one morning and it was having breakfast on the deck so I went and got my camera then crawled back in trying to stay behind the furniture. It knew I was there, but wasn't going to give up its pigeon.

I never really keep track, but I really enjoy seeing Pileated woodpeckers, Cardinals and Blue Jays.
I saw a pelican in migration just last week, and then the next day I got a pretty decent look at what I think was a Harlan's Hawk, but Im still pretty new to birding.
Saw (and heard) the first old squaw ducks of the season today, and some common terns, and a starling.

Chickadees do that annoying thing where if you make to much noise while walking in the woods, they get super pissed and give a distress call, which alerts every other animal in the woods to your presence. But at the same time, if I stand perfectly still amongst a flock of foraging chickadees, I've had them land within five feet of me. They seem curious, or at the very least they don't mind people if long as we don't make a ruckus. Chickadees are bros.
