I live in IN USA and every /out/ spot I go to has plenty of trees to hammock in. Our weather is also pretty easy as well. So around the Midwest in the spring and summer and a good way into fall I mostly hammock camp when I'm out solo.
But out west in places where trees are spotty, like mountains and that dry semi-desert shit? Tents rule. Also when backpacking with either a qt you want to snuggle up with or another dude you don't, tents rule. A good one can go up just as fast or faster than a hammock, don't require trees, and handle weather much better. I can also run a stove in one.
For more than one occupant they are lighter than multiple hammocks and their load can be split up...one guy carries the fabric and cordage, another the poles and stakes, etc.
I also prefer tents when hunting because it is easier to store gear out of the weather. A pack and bow or rifle can sit under he hammock, but the fly supplied with most of them isn't big enough to protect them from and kind of driven precipitation.
Anyway, there is no "master race". Some shit works best in some conditions, different shit in different conditions.

I haven't personally used a hammock, but I heard from a friend who did use one that temperature was an issue during the night. How would one fix this? Lots of blankets beneath you as well as on you?
Western Aussie here, but I mainly camp during Winter and Spring.

you need a blankie on the outside of the muck. this way your weight doesn't compress against it and make your backside cold. they call it an underblanket or underquilt. i find that with my underquilt i rarely need anything else even on top of me, even when it's cold out. the underblanket has shock cord down the sides so it kinda cocoons around you one you get in the hammock. think of a big nylon ballbag, and you're the testicles.

I moved into a new apartment and haven't bought a bed yet.
I've been sleeping in my hammock for 4 months of this year between being on the AT and in my new apartment.

Had one for like 6 months, the. It decided to rip on me.
Though they did replace it the next year when there vendor tent was back at the festival I bought it at.
But Got an eno after it ripped and have been golden.
I also have a a grand trunk, but I've got it recently and haven't got to camp with it.
My Warbonnet Blackbird. I've had it for 18 months and no issues so far. I've used it from upstate New York to the Mojave desert to the swamps of Louisiana.

I can never seem to fall asleep in my hammock.. I always have to put it on the ground and sleep like that... I tried so many ways of hanging it. Starting to think its just not wide enough.

My friend is 6'5" and sleeps in a grand trunk ultralight. My Double hammock is at least 18 inches longer. Arrowhead Equipment sells an 11 foot double hammock.
A 7'4" person can sleep in a hammock.

Are you hanging it with enough sag. Some new people cinch it too tight, thinking it will be flatter. That actually makes them sag more once you're in it, and makes them constrictive.
Hang it with at least 30 degrees of angle on each end. Then lay diagonal in the hammock, ie put your head 2ft to the right, and your legs 2ft to the left. You'll actually lay much flatter than if you cinch the hammock tight.

Would a wool blanket suffice as an underquilt along with a coat and appropriate pant layers?

I guess they've done their r'search and i suppose the only part your really need it is on your heavier pressure points, as long as you have a decent blanket or sleeping bag for your legs and feet. Still, I wouldn't risk it with one of those. I have a snugpak and it's glorious, even though it was a bit spensive

Well I never much have an issue wit insulating my lower body. It's not so much that my legs don't get cold as it is that I don't care if they're cold - feet are where I lose heat on that half and if I wear socks I ain't got no worries.
So long as I keep hands/feet/head covered and my torso insulated, I'm golden. I can deal with cold at the mid-points of my limbs.
But I'm an ultra-light faggot so what do I know.

Well my plan was to use my poncho on the outside as a windbreak since it is windproof and use the blanket to either wrap it around me or stuff it between the poncho and hammock.

Hammocks are awesome. Definitely a different experience from a tent. You are much more exposed, as opposed to being cut off from the outside. It's a pretty cool feeling. Tents definitely have their advantages, but so do hammocks. No reason why you can't have both, and use them interchangeably.
