Who here /inna telescope/?

What scope do you use? Or binoculars?

I use a 12-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain. I've been meaning to get into this hobby more lately. I've done the usual Andromeda Galaxy, Orion Nebula, Pleiades Cluster.

What are some other cool things you like to look at?

I have a few questions about scopes and photography if you or any other anons wouldn't mind answering them.

First of all, is a telescope (either reflector or refractor) truly required or would a decent sized (80mm) spotting scope work? Also do you do any astrophotography? If so, what equipment do you use?
>>
I have an 8" dob I used to use a lot. I still use it fro time to time, but with the combination of increasing light pollution and Accutane damaging my night vision, I don't take it out much. I've seen the Orion Nebula, Andromeda Galaxy, and Whirlpool Galaxy and a couple star clusters. I wish I could get out to dark sky sites with my mortarscope, I'd love to see more galaxy definition than a faint smudge. Regardless, it's still fun.

Does anyone here sketch deep sky objects?

Interested in getting involved with amateur astronomy. Any tips or advice on a beginner telescope for seeing some planets like Saturn or maybe some closer neighboring galaxies?

>you're not a real astronomer

I looked at the full moon with this and now my aqueous humor is boiling.
Is that bad?

No, that's totally normal, but seriously I want to take a look through a scope like that so bad.

25" Obsession is on the list!

Had to pass on the last one I saw on craigslist @ $14,000, included $3600 in eyepieces!

Celestron Skymaster 15x70 on a vintage German wooden tripod I bought at a yard sale.

Good for cheap.
>>
>>604540
Nice
>>
>>604547
Thank you! The tripod adapter that came w/binoc was totally unuseable plastic shit, so I bought a UTG aluminum one for $7. Very good. Collumation wss out (common problem), so on-line researched "collumate Celestron Astro binos" and fixed it myself. Total <$150ish.

Not bad for the price. Cheap optics are easily regretted! No regrets here.
>>
I wonder if large main mirrors will ever become cheap to produce. Has the price of large telescopes decreased over the years or have prices stayed around the same?
>>
>>604558
> over the years

Hard for me to say, all I know is anything "good" was always out of my reach 25, even 10 yrs ago.

Comparing used to new prices for top main brands (Celestron, Meade), you will find people selling at a loss. At least on C/L. A great way to go!

Switching to the astro sale forums brings much wider variety, higher quality and higher prices.

A scope like an Obsessions will hold it's value longer, but should still sell for less used.

The 25" Obsessions I wanted would be a bear to transport and setup. A 15" MUCH easier!

The 50" linked above should really have it's own house in high, dry, dark skys. It's own website, too!

Basically, its: >$ = > apperature, and it's all about apperature!

This is my Orion 120ST EQ on a. Bogan Manfrotto tripod w/3066 head and 3076 dolly.

Bought used and came w/several eyepeices. Solid low to mid tier. Tripod w/dolly alone is worth more than half what I paid.

Sigur Ros - the nothing song (vanilla sky soundtrack)
Circadian eyes - life in slow motion
Explosions in the Sky - remember me as a time of day
brian eno - the big ship
brian eno - an ending (ascent) is the title I think. Song from the last scene in the movie traffic

Any of you telescoped gentlemen have seen the ISS? I subscribed to SpotTheStation and have seen it (no telescope) every time it passes. It's amazing. I wonder what it looks like under a telescope. Maybe too bright.

I've seen it by chance and Iridium Flares, also by chance.

A friend had an on-line ephemeris for the Iridium constellation and made "Flare Spotting" a thing for him and gf.
