GSPs are better than Vizslas. /argument
>>
>>491701
Any breed of dog can be an /out/ dog as long as you train them right.
>>
>GSP better than vizslas
They practically the same dog they just have slight differences it really depends on what you are looking for. Vizslas are faster but GSPs have a better nose it really depends on the person
>>
>>491945
>They practically the same dog
Nah, they are really different. GSPs are long-ranging dogs with better noses and more drive, more muscular and generally 'tougher', more stubborn and consequently harder to train, more aloof with strangers etc.

My GSP is a machine. She's 53 lbs and I'm 175 lbs and we'll go skijoring for 15 miles and she will still be up for fun.

I like Vizslas, but I prefer the drive and personality of GSPs. But Vizslas are one of the easier pointers, which is why I've seen lots more in the city over the last few years (versus GSPs).

Anyone have any off leash dog issues? I.E off leash dogs acting like assholes or running away?
>hike the chief today. Going down from the first peak after doing the loop. find a sick hiking stick.
>Going down the stairs i see a pair of qt american girls petting a dog. The dog takes a likeing to my stick and starts to follow me. I assume it's their dog and enjoy having a dogbro to join me on my descent.
>They ask if the dog is mine, "Nope"... They then brief me that they found the dog running around the trail and have had trouble settling it down. The dog, Jake, is crazy about my stick so he seems to enjoy hanging around me.
>I manage to get a number off Jakes tag and get a hold of the owner. Apparently the owners partner is on the hill with his two cousins and the dog got away. The owner says this dog has difficulty holding attention to things.
>I get a hold of the partner, we arrange a meeting spot near where I found the dog. I'm not goin back up because im exhausted. Jake really admires my hiking stick thou and he seems to be sticking with me so me and Jake play fetch with this 5 foot long hiking stick in a narrow, empty section of the path.
>20 minutes later one of the cousins comes and grabs the dog, putting him on a leash.
Jake was a rad dog, but I get the feeling that he has dog ADD and he needs to be on a leash. Good feeling tho, wish the qt's stuck around so we could chat. Oh well.

Here's my hiking buddy. It's my friends doxi pincher mix. It was a street dog growing up so it doesn't like leashes. After a few hikes it has gotten more comfortable with me and a bit more obedient. On our first solo hike together he was constantly running far up ahead on the way down which worried me. Last few times I've come to the realization that if i do a loop he wont run far ahead because it's all new to him..
>>
>>491944
Not a shit soo
>>
>>492048

It all depends on Owner/Dog dynamic I know my dog will listen off leash because I have conditioned him to stay near me, on top of that his red heeler side is keen to stay near me about a 50' radius and he doesn't really go beyond that.

Some dogs are or are not inclined to off leash

Some people are the same, it is up to the owner to make the right choice.

Your dog IS your out bro, but limit their exercise until they are older when their growth plates close at one to one and a half years old. Their skeleton isn't ready for that much exertion at 5 months and it will increase their chance of elbow and hip dysplacia later in life. Congrats on the puppy, dogforums is a great resource with lots of knowledgeable people that I got a lot out of help from when my dog was a pup years ago. Good luck.
>>

This my whatever dog. She's down for almost anything I take her to do and I have absolutely no idea what she is. The place I adopted her from said lab shepherd and I know that isn't true.
>She jaw locks on a rope toy
>tolerates all children
>has a curly tail
>webbed toes
>her ears stand straight up when they feel like it
>she can do ear splitting howls
>coat changes colors in the season(sandy brown to almost black)
>incredibly smart
>incredibly loyal

Obviously she's more than just 2 breeds but she go damn near anywhere I want her to go. Just don't expect a dead run if shr catches even the slightest wiff of somthing interesting she'll lock her legs and jam her nose in the ground and take a deep, hard sniff.

>>
>>496034
They's so smart it's scary.
>>
>>496093
My dog trainer called them "borderline neurotic". He owned 2.
>>
>>496905
>"borderline neurotic"
True. Mine used to herd everything, even people when she was a pup. Had to train that behavior out of her.
>>
>>496905
Their behavior is only an issue when they aren't worked hard enough.

>>496916
>True. Mine used to herd everything, even people when she was a pup. Had to train that behavior out of her.
Don't get a herding dog if you don't want a herding dog. I never understand why people get sport or working dogs and don't respect the breed for what it was meant for.
>>
>>496921
I'm fine with her herding animals, but she was biting at people's heels so I had to do something. I only discouraged herding people. Also she's a rescue.
>>
>>496921
>Don't get a herding dog if you don't want a herding dog. I never understand why people get sport or working dogs and don't respect the breed for what it was meant for.
Because they like the other attributes and temperament of said animal, maybe? That's a bit like saying you only drive your 4wd truck in 4-low and only off road. Just because they were build for one thing doesn't mean they won't train for another.
>>
>>496932
>Because they like the other attributes and temperament of said animal, maybe? That's a bit like saying you only drive your 4wd truck in 4-low and only off road. Just because they were build for one thing doesn't mean they won't train for another.
No, it's more like getting a 4wd truck and putting it on blocks in your front yard.

There is a reason sporting and hunting breeds in cities are more likely to go through several owners than other breeds.

Or why labs become obese and have their knees blow out. Or why collies and other high-energy working breeds have separation anxiety and other psychological problems stemming from a lack of exercise and mental stimulation.

A gun dog is always going to be happier with a hunter a herding dog is always going to be happier working on a farm. Why bother "training out" its natural instinct? It's absurd, like clipping the wings of a parrot.
>>
>>496941
You act like you know how my dog and I live, and assume a lot.

>don't want my dog biting people's feet.
>get out with her almost every single day.
>let her herd chickens, geese, or anything we come across on our hikes.
>mention one aspect where herding isn't a good behavior to have.
>"NOOOOO YOU'RE RUINING THE POOR DOG!"

Very cool dog, mixed breeds can make the best dogs, they can have the best traits of several breeds. Although calling her a lab/Sheperd mix really doesn't really seem too far off from what you describe.

Also you mention the lock jaw on a rope toy, no dogs can "lock" their jaw, some can just bite really freaking hard.

Me and my /out dog adventuring innawoods. Not sure his exact breed, cause I saved his ass from the pound. Looks like a border collie/malamute cross. He's a brat when on the leash but in his element out in the bush. He runs a parameter around me and scouts ahead but never gets to far away that Id lose him. I have no doubt he'd let me know if a bear was nearby, probably even try and take it on. Great /out pal
