I'm looking at getting some Nike SFBs. I live in a woodsy region, but the prairie is close by too. Does anyone know how SFBs fare in the Midwest?

Just got these for backpacking trips this summer.
Glad you posted this thread, I used to work at a construction firm and there the look was pretty much Cat Boots, I got pic related and want to know how they would fair /out/ as I'm starting to get into it, dont really want to go hiking in trainers, but buying hiking boots would be very costly at this stage, given that I have these.

In essence, yes. While they don't provide much in the way of ankle protection or support, trainers have a lot of cushioning, something regular "city-shoes" lack.

Not really. It's not the muscles in your ankle that you protect by wearing ankle boots, it's more about the tendons, joints and ligaments there that would suffer otherwise. This only becomes a factor when carrying very heavy loads though, around 50 pounds and up.

You can strenghten your ankles by walking barefoot or using minimalist shoes, which strenghten your feet and lower leg in general. The elevated heel and thick soles in normal shoes 'numbs' your senses and increase your risk of twisting your ankle.

Wouldn't say they're overkill. Been wearing Meindl Dovre Extreme GTX for years now as do most of the game keeps up this way.
No experience with that exact pair but you might look and those Meindls and Le Chameu (sp?) Who make a similarly gear pair of hunting boots that are also becoming popular and compare features.

Not really. Tests end up bending one way and the other. Personally, I don't trust it but some would bet their lives on it. I have a pair that I wear to the beach to protect my feet because I'm diabetic and I can't say after wearing them 2-3 days at a time that I ever felt any improvement on it. But that's just me. Maybe I'm an exception or something.

I agree it makes some sense. I mean there's a reason why sprinters wear light racing flats instead of cushioned daily training shoes. I personally prefer my Asics for running but I wear either Converse or flip flops for just about everything else.
If I buy a boot that goes up to mid calf, will I be sweltering in warm weather? I like the look of mid-calf boots, but I don't want them to be impractical. Is it better to just get ankle-high boots?

If you do, get only KSO. The thicker versions don't allow as much toe movability and ground feel, and the el-x is just like a KSO that is slightly cheaper and doesn't fit as well.
Bust as I mentioned in the above post, I wear Lems most of the time because they look like a normal casual shoe, not specifically a running shoe, but feels like walking barefoot. And I can put in the thin flat insole if I'm walking on concrete and want more padding.

I was pleasantly surprised that pair of almost 40 year old boots work so well. Always buy a pair of inserts for these things and toss the shitty laces that they come with and make some from paracord.
I asked /trv/ this yesterday but I didn't get any replies. My buddy and I are hiking through St. Martin and Anguilla in June and I'm stuck on what shoes to get. I need something that can handle well on slippery surfaces, sand, and dirt. I really like the Merrell Trail Gloves but I'm not sold on anything yet. Any recs? something minimalist is a plus.

Replying from my crApple iphone. The pictures are probably going to be way too fucking big and turned sideways knowing how 4chan mobile works. As for your question I have been wearing my pair for a little over 2 years straight now and the damage to the leather has been fairly minimal. It depends if you bought a real GI issue pair or not. Theres tons of made in china fakes floating around. If its below 40 bucks its probably a fake. The fakes have pleather that cracks easily. And the soles are glued on rather than vulcanized to the shoe.

Left is the real pair that has a couple years of constant wear. I wear em for everything, work, everyday shoewear, and my outwear. I go out to Yosemite to do my big hiking trips, I live in San Francisco so maybe the humidity affects how quickly the shoes leather cracks. I wash these boots alot too and I havent used any leather treatment or polish yet. So in my experience they are very durable. You can see the chinese fake is in bad shape after a few months of use (right)

The number one way to tell real jungle boots from fakes is the stitching on the back. I'm pointing to it with my finger. Anyway if you know for a fact your pair is real, I have read stories or GI's claiming that the late 80's issue black jungle boots were pretty awful quality and fell apart easily so troops would continue to try to find earlier production green pairs instead. Maybe try some black kiwi wax polish to polish up the leather and hopefully reduce the cracking? Anyway I'm sure theres better /out/dooring boots out there like the Merrells and so on but for what I paid, jungle boots are everything I need. Save for steel toe requirements. 40 bucks got me boots that are still trucking over 2 years later vs 50+ dollars for a pair of converse that I would wear out in about a year

Got em from some milsurp shop.
I always wear size 13 shoe, but these fuckers were huge so an 11R fit me just fine.
Brand is something called Rothgo if that matters.
They're comfy as hell and all, but they just seem to be wearing down quickly with casual use, have shitty laces (which I already knew about), and the inside footing seems to be wearing down quickly too.
$35 total so I still don't really know what to think.
I sure am happy with how easy they breathe and everything, I just wish they weren't wearing down so fast.

Yeah Rothco is exactly the made in china stuff I'm talking about. If you look closely you'll probably notice that the soles arent vulcanized and I'm assuming the sticking on the heel is missing. My first pair of jungles was the junky Rothco ones. They wear out real quick both on the soles and on the inside where your foot sits. I reccomend finding a real pair or buying a new production made in USA pair. The difference is astounding. The looks are deceiving but the difference when wearing a real pair is astounding.

Rothco (chinese) after about half a year. The rubber is kinda crap. In Northern California the milsurp is pretty garbage. I recommend checking online and finding some original pairs. If you want some modern production ones I heard Altama makes good Jungles made in the USA.

How helpful is heel support for backpacking? I'm looking to go for a few 2-5 day backpacking trips in the Adirondacks this summer, including some of the high peaks and I want to buy some boots that will last me a long time and aren't uneccesarily heavy and expensive.

Traded them in for the Berghaus Supalite II GTXs, I'm quite pleased with them, the leather is super nice, especially on the inside, and they're a lot lighter than they look which is nice.
I was gonna get some Merrell Moab Rovers but my local store didn't have them in, or any Moab Ventilators in my size so I couldn't try them on for size. Maybe next time.

I bought a couple pairs of Teva Riva mids during the recent clearance sale. Damn these things are short and wide--it's like I'd need a square foot to wear them, and I already have wide toes.
Any suggestions for a lightweight boot in the $60 range on sale? Something that won't soak up water?

They felt pretty robust, but the finish was terrible on them. Most of the guys at the store I bought them from said that they're supposed to be pretty tough, and that mine must have been a factory fault. Loads of threads coming loose/fraying, loads of glue residue on the sides where the sole met the boot, just generally shitty finish for a £90 boot.

I've got pic related.
I initially bought them for work, but eventually took them bushwalking since I found them rather comfortable.
I decided to really give them a bit of a shit test and wear them for work and whenever I go out.
So I'd wear them for a majority of the week.
After about a year they are still holding up. the waterproofing still works well (I havent done much maintenance on them apart from the occasional wet cloth clean to get diesel and oil out)
They are quite comfortable, especially after you've worn them in. and are easy to take on and off because of the zipper and also easy to air-out.
They've been everywhere with me, I've taken them when I go flying, when I went on diving trips, surfing trips, long hikes across rainforests, arid countryside. heck I even skydiving with them and did a couple of jumps.
Ive also been told they look pretty fashionable, I found it pretty funny, since they looked rugged after some use some hipster wanted them for $150, which I found pretty funny.
I am still on the lookout for boots that can really take some punishment. But I have been pretty pleased with my ones.
Are trail running shoes useful for hiking, or too flimsy? I'm not talking about hardcore backpacking, just taking day hikes.
