How good is the 4A-FE?

My gramps had a Corolla with one. Bought it new in '99 when his last car broke down, and drove it into the ground at 460K KM's (just a hair under 300K miles). He had half his carpentry shop in the boot of that thing, which worked great to cover for the shot dampers, and his clutch started slipping because his left knee is bad and he abused the clutch.
The engine, and most of the car around it, still worked like a champ.

Friend has a 2007 camry with a 4a-fe and it burns oil worse than the saturn i owned. Other than that its still running butter smooth at 246k

what a load of shit, it's the only other 4 cylinder next to the one they put in the dodge avenger that struggles to get 30mpg, maybe if you had a light foot you could scramble 32 out of it

Toyota has always had head gasket problems. I can list more reliable engines from Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Suzuki, GM and Chrysler. That's how middle of the road Toyota A engines are. They're also very old and inefficient, the power to MPG just isn't there.
