so, this rubber thing on the front axle broke open on me...

how fucked is it? is it driveable?

>is it driveable?
Sure, until the bearings fall out :^)
>>
>>15445271
Youll get sand and dirt into the CV joint, and it'll chew up the bearings
>>
>>15445282
shit, whats the best way to seal it back up? does super glue hold well?
>>
>>15445286
RTV niqqa
>>
>>15445271
alright, so I figured out it's called the cv boot and shouldn't be that bad to replace, hopefully my local parts store has them
>>
>>15445297
cool, I'll get some of that
>>
>>15445271
it is cv boot
all it does is keep dust and mud out of the bearing surfaces
your car will run without it but the bearings might wear out quicker even if you add extra grease
>>
buy a new boot you quadruple nigger.

stop being cheap. Dont superglue it it will rip open again. If its open, particulate can get in the joint and basically ruin it in short order
>>
honestly, reman axles are so cheap I wouldn't even bother replacing the boot. Go to parts store, spend 50 bucks and an afternoon, be done with it.
>>
>>15445271
>thinking about driving without the rubber thing
>asking if rubber thing is necessary
>not knowing about the importance of rubber things in general
u dun fukt up
>>
>>15445331
Why not just drive it until it's fucked, and then replace the axle. OP may wreck it or sell it before it becomes a problem.
>>
>>15445271
The CV boot contains the grease and keeps debris out.

If it's torn the CV joint won't last as long, It will make noises when it starts failing.

If it just broke you'll be fine for a long time, don't worry about it.
>>
you can drive as is. eventually it will wear out the joint and you will need a new axle. replacing the boot is labor intensive and not normally worth doing. replace the axle when it starts clicking loudly. if you leave it too long it will break.
>>
CV boots are cheap on advance auto parts, especially when they have coupon $50 off $150.
Parts were $100.
Labor was about 150 for my Honda.
