Is it a good idea to buy a used alternator? I need a new one for my 95 Mustang and was thinking a used one might be significantly cheaper.

really poor people rebuild it themself

I guess it's not a really big deal becuase it's pretty easy to swap out on your car, if it was in a difficult place id suggest don't. Ironically I have a spare alternator for your exact car sitting in my garage with no use for it

I was more concerned about how reliable they are.

Go to the junk yard and check all the cars, see which one looks freshest and grab that one, sometimes you can find damn near new alternators in the junk yard.
Also, do a cross reference on the part and see what other cars it was used it, gives you more options on finding a fresh good one.

Used or reman? Lots of folks will sell old alts from their cars, I would buy one if its oem over a reman. Ive had 3x reman alts fail on me. Go oem, new or used .

All the cars as in all the mustangs btw (or any other car which uses that same part no alternator)

I was thinking of hitting up the junkyards. I got 4 brand new tires and wheels for my escort that way and spent less than the cost of one new one.

the alternator itself rarely goes bad
it's the voltage regulator (or sometimes the bearings) that needs to be changed
this means that if it/they went bad in your car, it/they'll be bad in any other used one
the regulator is broken by the heat and the bearings by dust

Bruh it's usually the brushes and/or slip ring that wear out.
They are literally the only wear part in an alternator.

Where would even get a rebuild kit. Places like Auto Zone don't even carry them anymore.
